6 Overview Samsung DeX (Samsung Desktop experience) is a new UX that extends the functionality of your Android device into a desktop environment. Simply connect a Samsung DeX compatible device to an HDMI monitor with a Samsung DeX station. Your phone automatically launches in desktop mode in the monitor. Samsung S8 and S8+ support DeX connectivity. Also supported in upcoming flagship devices. Samsung DeX Estimated addressable market: 30M devices by the end of 2017

7 Why DeX? Reports suggest that 74% of IT workers use 2 or more devices for work, and 52% used 3 or more devices. This increased fragmentation causes lost productivity. Samsung DeX resolves this issue by bringing the desktop experience to Android mobile devices. Samsung DeX compatible apps utilize powerful features (such as multi-tasking) offered in Samsung DeX mode. Apps that are not modified for Samsung DeX can still be launched, but operate in fixed-size mode with limited functionality. DeX is a powerful tool especially for game apps, VDI, and remote desktop apps, where users need more flexibility with a bigger screen, keyboard, and mouse. Samsung DeX

8 Setting up DeX To switch into Samsung DeX: 1. Connect the DeX station to an external monitor via a HDMI cable. 2. Connect the DeX station to a power source via a Samsung branded fast charger (fast chargers have a lighting bolt symbol on them). 3. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the mobile device via Bluetooth. Alternatively, connect the mouse and keyboard via USB. 4. Place the mobile device on the DeX Station.

9 Advantages of Samsung DeX Productive Immersive Innovative Apps in Samsung DeX mode can take advantage of Android N s new Multi-window feature. Multiple instances of the same app can be opened simultaneously and resized dynamically. Apps can be expanded to a full-screen, immersive window. Apps can add powerful features: drag and drop files between windows, copy and paste between multiple apps, ALT+TAB and more Samsung DeX

10 How Samsung DeX works Samsung DeX is an extension of Android N s Multi-window mode. Additional code development has been added by Samsung to make it robust. No new Samsung APIs are required to make Android apps compatible with DeX mode. Device Requirements: Mobile Device: Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ External Display: FHD (16:9 ratio) HDMI display (monitor, TV, or projector) Peripherals: DeX station, Samsung-brand fast charger, mouse, and keyboard (BT, USB, or RF) OS: Android N (SDK 24 or above) Mobile Mode Samsung DeX Mode

11 Optimizing for Samsung DeX Mandatory Requirements for Fixed-Size Window Desktop Mode The app must support the following requirements for the Android app to open in fixed size window mode.

12 Optimizing for Samsung DeX Mandatory Requirements for Resizable Window Desktop Mode The Android app must support these requirements for the app to open in full desktop mode. App must support Multi-window in Android Nougat to be able to dynamically re-size windows in Samsung DeX mode App must support the following runtime configuration changes: Density change between xxxhdpi and mdpi Resolution change between WQHD and FHD Orientation change between portrait to landscape Screen layout change Screen size change Smallest screen size change UI mode change between mobile and desktop

13 Optimizing for Samsung DeX Keepalive declaration Prevents Samsung DeX from automatically killing the app when switching between mobile mode and Samsung DeX mode. Foreground Service apps (E.g., Messenger apps) will be alive even if the Keepalive metadata is not declared

14 Optimizing for Samsung DeX Optional Features: For the best desktop experience, it is recommended to support these optional features. However, they are not required to launch the app in desktop mode.

15 Publish your App in Galaxy Apps After implementing the modifications necessary to make your Android app DeX compatible, you can publish your app in the Galaxy App store. 18 Developing for DeX Android apps are build for touch. The challenge was to adapt a touch-first app to the keyboard and mouse without compromising the experience. We leveraged learning from our existing desktop software base to build the right DeX behavior for mouse and keyboard. Reader Mobile (Acrobat) - Navigation and commenting are the top used features. We adapted them to work perfectly using a mouse. Lightroom Mobile Implemented scrolling to use the mouse (including the scroll wheel) to give users a desktop experience. Implemented all top keyboard shortcuts from our desktop software (all DeX supported apps). We made changes specifically for DeX. We had to adapt between switching from smartphone to DeX mode so that features such as commenting (Reader Mobile - Acrobat) would automatically carry over. We disabled scan (Reader Mobile Acrobat) because it would be difficult when docked to a DeX station. 18
