3 1. Introduction SoftRadio Radio Management System (RMS) and RoIP Interface Units (RIU) open up a wide range of opportunities to add productive features to the system. The PhoneConnect option allows to make phone calls directly from the SoftRadio console. Connection to a PSTN line or cellular network (GSM/UMTS) is made through a special-purpose RIU. Connections to IP-Phone switches with SIP-protocol 1 are made through the LAN with the NetworkRepeater as a gateway. PhoneConnect adds a phone extension as a device panel within the SoftRadio console. The phone panel operates similar to a radio panel, but with the obvious differences. Instead of selecting PTT as on a radio panel, the operator activates ( clicks ) the handset/or desk telephone symbol. Each operator can have a dedicated phone line, or share one or more lines with other operators. Calls can be made, received and put on hold for other operators to take over. If the CrossPatch option is installed on the console, an operator can patch calls between phone and radio users. Integration with PSTN (or POTS Plain Old Telephone System) and 2G/3G (GSM/UMTS) is done using dedicated RoIP Interface Units (RIU). For analogue (PSTN), a special RIU connects to a two-wire DTMF line. For 2G/3G (GSM/UMTS) a special RIU is paired with a suitable modem. Satellite phones with PSTN connectivity can also be accessed. Integration with SIP exchanges via a Network Repeater is currently under development. For any queries, or to provide input into the development, please contact us. PSTN GSM/3G SIP* Gateway Network Repeater *SIP Option in development Figure 1 Options to connect with telephone systems Audio is reproduced using the same soundcard and device (speakers, headset) as used for radiocommunications. This allows for excellent flexibility and integration. For example if two speaker controls are selected in the console settings, one for the left and one for the right audio channel, an operator can monitor radio calls on ear of a headset, and listen to the phone audio on the other. 1 Currently in development Copyright testadvance pty/ltd Page 2 of 6
4 Figure 2 PhoneConnect device panel and dialpad 2. Features and functions Making a phone call (PSTN, 2G/3G) A call to a phone (PSTN, 2G/3G) is made from PhoneConnect as shown in Figure 2. Pressing the red Call button opens a dial-pad. A second activation opens a speed dial list. Once the call is made, the caption bar is highlighted in red and the phone line is set as busy. The phone panel caption bar is highlighted in orange on other consoles to indicate the phone is in use. This phone line is locked to other operators until the connection is terminated or parked. Entering a phone number A phone number can be entered using the dial-pad or the phone book. Dial-pad allows to enter the number first and then use the off-hook button (green phone symbol) to execute the call (as on a mobile phone), or vice versa (as on a traditional land-line phone). The phone book allows to select an entry and use the offhook button to make the call, double-click on an entry to make the call, or use a speed-dial number assigned in the table. Selecting the notebook symbol (below the 0 ) in the dial-pad opens a second window which displays the phone book. A call can be made selecting an entry and pressing the green off-hook button, or by double clicking on an entry. To use speed dial, the speed dial number is entered in place of a phone number. The app displays the corresponding number as soon as a match is found. Pressing the [123...] retrieves the full number, pressing the off-hook button makes the call. Phone book is an excel file located in the folder C:\ProgramData\Mimer (default). Copyright testadvance pty/ltd Page 3 of 6
5 Figure 3 Open Phone Book Previous calls A list of previous call can be opened by selecting the channel window of the Phone Connect device panel, the empty field above the top speaker button as shown in Figure 3. This opens a window with a list of previous calls. A double-click on an entry opens the dial-pad. The selected number is automatically filled in as the number to call. Figure 4 Open Phone Book Parking a call A call can be parked to either put the call on hold, or to allow another operator to take the call. Phone Connect uses the Wait function (yellow button with time-glass symbol), similar to the Wait on a radio panel. Once activated, the Wait button will be highlighted and the microphone on the originating console is disconnected. The Phone Connect caption bar will be highlighted in blue on all other consoles to indicate there a phone call has been parked. Copyright testadvance pty/ltd Page 4 of 6
6 Taking a parked call An operator can now pick up the parked call by selecting the Wait button. Once the call is taken on this consoles, the caption bar on the phone device panel will be highlighted in red. The caption bar will be highlighted in orange for all other consoles, and the phone line will be locked for these users. Radio call while on the phone Incoming audio from radios will continue to be received by the console. Note that for it to be audible, the speaker function needs to be activated on the corresponding radio panels. As described earlier, using a stereo or 2-channel headset allows an operator to monitor incoming radio traffic on one channel, and communicated over the phone on the other. When the operator answers a radio call, SoftRadio will route the audio from the microphone to the radio and disconnect the microphone audio from the phone call as long as the radio s PTT is active. SoftRadio will revert to the phone call once PTT is released. Editing the phone book The phone book can be edited in two ways. The Excel file can be edited directly using a suitable application. The phone book can also be edited via a dedicated menu. After a phone book is opened using the steps described above, a right-click on the phone list will provide the option to Edit the phone list. The phone list will open in the editor and changes can be made. As opening the phone book is done using the steps to initiate a call, this call be cancelled via the SoftRadio panel while editing the file. Pauses can be included in the dialling sequence by adding spaces to the number. Each space introduces a 1s pause. Pauses can be required where e.g. a 0 or 9 prefix is required to obtain an outside line. Copyright testadvance pty/ltd Page 5 of 6
