3 1. Introduction GSM CMF is a product designed to convert a GSM telephone line into an analogue line (PSTN). The unit is produced in a six-module container for assembly according to DIN EN guidelines in accordance with standards DIN and is easily fitted inside a control panel. 2. Installation The GSM CMF module has a series of removable terminals and a connector on the lower part: Power supply terminal board Terminal board for the outgoing analogue telephone line Unit status LED Programming connector On the upper part there is a slot for insertion of the telephone SIM card and the antenna connector: 2.1. Power Supply. The unit requires a12 Volt direct current power supply. We recommend using a buffered power supply (uninterruptible power supply-ups, battery) to allow the unit to operate even in the event of a mains power supply failure. The unit is able to operate with voltages between 9 and 15V. The absorption at rest is approx. 100 ma, while during a voice connection the typical absorption is 250 ma; it depends a lot on the distance from the antenna of the cell to which it is connected, on the frequency used and on signal quality. It is necessary to install a protection with a T500 ma fuse and a power supply cut-off device on the power-supply line. GSM CMF Installer s Handbook V1.1 Page 3

4 2.2. Analogue telephone line. The outgoing analogue telephone line has the capacity to control a single telephone unit (telephone, dial, switchboard incoming line). Be aware that there may be high voltages on the phone line during the ring Status LED. 5 3. Programming The unit is immediately operational. Nevertheless, it is possible to change some operating parameters by storing some values in the SIM card phone book. Before programming values in the phone book, we recommend completely deleting its contents. Make sure that the power supply has been disconnected before removing and inserting the SIM card in the unit. Otherwise the SIM card and/or unit may be damaged. There are two possible programming modes: Manual programming Programming via PC Manual programming is accomplished by momentarily installing the SIM card in a mobile phone and storing the values in the phone book, following the instructions for the mobile phone being used. Programming via PC is accomplished by connecting the USB cable (optional) to the programming port and activating the proper programme on the PC. Refer to the programme manual. There are two types of parameters: Settings: those in which the name stored in the phone book contains all of the information (i.e. the volume is stored in the phone book as VOLUME=7 in the name field, leaving the telephone number field empty). Programming: the name in the phone book is associated with a telephone number Programming the microphone gain. It is possible to select the voice gain that is transmitted to the GSM by storing the following parameter in the phone book: MICGAIN=n where n is the gain value (0=minimum, 7=maximum, default=4) Programming the loudspeaker volume. It is possible to select the volume of the voice received by the GSM by storing the following parameter in the phone book: VOLUME=n where n is the volume value (0=minimum, 14=maximum, default=7) Programming the waiting time for the selection. Numbers must be dialled on the GSM network without pauses. When starting to dial a number on the analogue telephone line, the number is considered finished if more than a specific amount of time has passed since the last digit entered. The duration of this waiting time can be changed by storing the following parameter in the phone book: GSM CMF Installer s Handbook V1.1 Page 5

6 DIALTO=n where n is the maximum waiting time in seconds (from 1 to 9, default=3) 3.4. Programming the terminator for the selection. In addition to the waiting time for the selection, it is possible to define a DTMF key that causes the entered number to be dialled immediately. The following parameter must be stored in the phone book to define the number termination key: DIALTM=n where n is the termination key (it can be *, #, A, B, C and D. The A, B, C and D keys cannot be generated by normal phones but only by certain telephone dials) Programming automatic SMS deletion. It is possible to select whether the received text messages (SMS) should be deleted automatically or left in the memory and deleted manually by the user. The following parameter must be stored in the phone book to enable automatic deletion: DELSMS 3.6. Programming automatic echo cancellation. It is possible to select whether the unit manages the automation cancellation of the local echo. The GSM network autonomously provides for cancellation of the echo, but in some cases it must also be done locally. Cancellation of the echo improves voice quality, but worsens reception of the DTMF tones (if the unit is connected to tele-assistance units). The following parameter must be stored in the phone book to enable automatic cancellation: NOECHO 3.7. Programming the automatic forwarding of received text messages (SMS). The unit may be set up to automatically forward all received text messages (SMS) to a particular telephone number. To activate this function you must specify the telephone number to which the received text messages (SMS) should be forwarded, associating it with the following name in the phone book: SMSFWD 3.8. Programming automatic management of the residual credit. The unit may be set up to automatically request the residual credit from the service provider after the last telephone call and communicate it to a particular number via SMS. 7 To activate this function you must specify the telephone number to which the SMS relative to the credit should be sent, associating it with the following name in the phone book: CREDIT When 10 minutes from the last outgoing call have passed, the unit will request the residual credit from the service provider and will send the SMS to the programmed number. In alternative, it is possible to request the credit status at any time from any mobile phone by sending an SMS with the following message to the unit: GETCREDIT Please note: Credit management is not a standard function of the GSM connection. Currently this function is only available for Italy and for TIM, VODAFONE and WIND service providers. There is no guarantee that this function will be maintained unaltered by the service providers. 8 4. Operation To operate the unit: Make sure that the power supply is disconnected. Remove the SIM card holder by pressing on the yellow button with the tip of a pen: Insert the SIM card in the SIM card holder: Insert the SIM card holder in the slot with the SIM card facing down. Make sure that the receiver of the phone connected to the line is at rest. Make sure that the antenna is connected and power up. The LED starts to blink Red-Green, indicating that the unit is in the initialisation phase. After about one minute (depending on the service provider), the LED starts to blink slowly (a brief impulse approx. every 1.5 seconds) with colour green, yellow or red depending on the level of the received signal. Lift the receiver. The invitation to select is heard and the LED starts to blink slowly (on for approx. 1.5 seconds, off for a brief impulse) with colour green, yellow or red depending on the level of the received signal. Dial a telephone number to test the voice connection. Attention! If the unit is powered up while the telephone receiver is lifted, the LED blinks green-yellow-red-off and the unit goes into test mode without initialising the GSM module. If you do not wish to go into test mode for particular operations (radio coverage verification, etc.), just lower the receiver to exit test mode and start the initialisation of the GSM module. Remote control Some functions, such as the dialling of the telephone number, the sending and receiving of text messages (SMS), the programming and control of the microphone and loudspeaker volumes, can be carried out remotely via PC or preset units (like tele-assistance for lifts LifTel). The USB programming cable and suitable management software like GSM CMFCfg are necessary to carry out this function via PC. Units like LifTel, on the other hand, already have the driver for communicating with GSM CMF and only a connection cable between the two programming and control serial ports is required. In remote control mode it is possible to obtain quantitative and qualitative information on the received signal. 6. DTMF tone management. In communications that use GSM technology, the problem of transmission and reception of DTMF tones often arises. Communications on GSM line are compressed by the cell to which you are connected in order to increase the number of conversations that can be carried out at the same time with other services. This compression leads to worsened communication quality, often already perceptible by ear", which is absolutely detrimental as regards the transmission and reception of DTMF tones. In "remote control mode the DTMF tones can be sent digitally (therefore with unaltered quality) and they can be decoded by the local decoder. In any case, it is very important to modify the "Loudspeaker Volume, Microphone Gain and Echo Cancellation parameters because significantly affect tone recognition.
