CELL, MOBILE, IPHONE, SMART WHATEVER YOU CALL IT, WE ARE ALL OBSESSED WITH OUR CELL PHONES.
NEW CELL PHONE POLICY FOR CHOPTICON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Effective Monday CHOPTICON STUDENT CELL PHONE USER AGREEMENT Students in possession of a cell phone must comply with St. Mary's County Public Schools regulation JFDF-R Possession or Use of Portable Electronic and Wireless Communication Devices. In addition, students will be expected to comply with all class and school rules while using personal devices.
The use of a cell phone is a privilege. When abused, privilege will be withdrawn.
I agree to practice safe and responsible use of information and communication technology. I agree to obey/follow the following: Students may not use their cell phone during instructional time unless otherwise given permission by the teacher. This includes office runners and/or students who are in the hallways or in the restrooms during instructional time. Instructional time is defined as the time from the bell to start school to the dismissal bell.
Each teacher has the discretion to allow and regulate the use of cell phones in the classroom and on specific projects.
Approved cell phones must ALWAYS be in silent mode (not vibrate mode) while on school campus, unless otherwise allowed by a teacher. Headphones/earbuds may be used with teacher permission.
Students may use an ear bud with their cell phones during lunch. For safety reasons, only one earbud is allowed at any time while in the building.
Students will be held accountable for any negative postings, pictures, or video. Students may not use cell phones to bully or to post derogatory statements about students, faculty, or staff via text message or Social Media.
Remember what Chris Herren said yesterday you don t know someone s story. You shouldn t tear someone else down to make yourself feel better.
Please remember the legal consequences for an 18 year old may be more severe than for a 14 year old.
Permissions may temporarily be suspended at any time in keeping with rules surrounding the implementation of standardized tests or other specialized school activities. Students who need to leave early for appointments or illness must check out through the attendance office or nurse s office. Students cannot just call/text home and leave.
Consequences - I understand that noncompliance may result in: Phone call home Loss of privilege Possible loss of use of all technology Possible loss of Pride Time Any other consequence deemed appropriate based upon the infraction
Why the change? Part of our mission is to prepare students for life after school. A Smartphone has become a common tool in the workplace. There are also places of employment where you may not use a phone. A good local example would be one of the secure buildings on the base where employees must leave their phones in their cars or lock them up in a special locker. In school, a phone is a great tool for reading, research, problem-solving, reminders and Membeam just to name a few.
REVIEW When may a student use a cell phone? During Pride Time, before 8:00 a.m. and after school (2:45 p.m.) Phones may be used during class WITH TEACHER PERMISSION Phones will be in silent mode not vibrate you will have time to check your social media and other personal accounts during Pride Time.
What about in the hallways/between classes? You may not have your phone out during class changes. You are allowed to use one earbud to listen to music during class changes but your phone must be put away. No checking or typing texts, phone calls, etc. Remember you must be able to travel safely through the halls and be able to see, hear and remain alert to your surroundings.
It is up to you, the student, to make this a successful transition. Please remember the following: If an adult in the building tells you to put your phone away, you will put the phone away respectfully and with no excuses. Respect the individual classroom teacher s rules. It may not be appropriate to allow cell phone use in certain classes and the teacher has every right to restrict that use to create the most effective learning environment.
The SMCPS IT Department technicians have been working diligently to install additional Wi-Fi access points throughout the building. By the end of February, students will be allowed to login to the school Wi-Fi with their school credentials. Please keep in mind that when you access the school Wi-Fi, you are agreeing to SMCPS policies and regulations regarding use of the internet.

Reminder about Pride Time If you do not have food or a pass you do not move. You must find a location and stay there unless you have food or a pass. Students roaming the hallways will be assigned lunch detention beginning Monday.
