Creating Your Own Student Accounts On Central UNIX and OpenMail SYNOPSIS This section describes how Cal Poly students may create their own account on Cal Poly's Central UNIX. When the UNIX account is created for the user, an OpenMail account used for is also created. The OpenMail account is used to send and receive via the OpenMail servers. Users who have a Central UNIX account and need an OpenMail account may use this same process to obtain their OpenMail account. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this document is to guide you through a special session in which you add your own account to Central UNIX at Cal Poly. For this process to work, you must be a currently registered student at Cal Poly, must not already have a Central UNIX account, and must know specific pieces of information which the Records office has on file about you. You must have all of the information listed below before you begin: Your full name as it appears on your SSF (Schedule - Student - Fees) Form. DO NOT use nicknames unless they are a legitimate part of your records. Your Student ID number (9 digits which are the same as your Social Security number) Your permanent phone number including area code. (This is usually your parents' phone number or whatever phone number was listed on your registration form as your permanent address.) Your permanent address zip code (5 or 9 digits, see permanent phone number for a definition) Your year of high school graduation (4 digits) If you are unsure of any of the underlined items, please check "Mustang Info" for your correct information by pointing a web browser at Select the link "Mustang Info...". You will be asked to enter your Cal Poly ID number and your PIN number, which is explained in the Cal Poly printed class schedule. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A CENTRAL UNIX AN ACCOUNT AND WANT OPENMAIL Optionally, your Central UNIX account's password can be substituted for the above information if you already have a Central UNIX account and are using this process to obtain an OpenMail account. If you have a Central UNIX account and do not know the password, you will be required to enter the above information to validate yourself. If you know your Central UNIX password, it will be used for your new OpenMail account as well. If you do not know your Central UNIX password, the new password that you enter for OpenMail will also be assigned to your Central UNIX account. ADDING YOUR ACCOUNTS There will be two methods available for adding your own accounts. The first method uses a Web browser. The second method uses ASCII terminals at various locations on campus. The two following sections describe each of these methods. Page ACCOUNT-1
ADDING YOUR ACCOUNTS USING A WEB BROWSER Point your Web browser to the following URL: Follow the instructions on the screen. You will get both a Central UNIX account and an account (OpenMail is the server we use) from this session. Refer to the sub-sections within "ADDING YOUR ACCOUNTS USING AN ASCII TERMINAL" for information on the various phases of the add process. ADDING YOUR ACCOUNTS USING AN ASCII TERMINAL A. GO TO A CAMPUS TERMINAL The first step is to go to any terminal that has access to the campus network and perform the following steps (you only enter the items that are in italics; The terminal response appears as plain text, and prompts appear as bold text.): Places to go for ASCII terminals: Kennedy Library Reserve Room Architecture 313 Faculty Office Building 14B Science North 214 NOTE: If working with a class or as a group of students, please do not attempt to have more than one or two persons in the group add their account at a time. Doing so is similar to a group of customers trying to get a bank teller's attention by yelling all at once. The teller usually goes out to lunch. B. CHECK THE CAPS LOCK KEY Make sure that the "Caps Lock" is NOT enabled. If the word "Lock" appears on the bottom right half of the screen under the horizontal line, the "Caps Lock" is on. Make sure "Caps Lock" is off! If you proceed with the "Caps Lock" turned on, the system will not accept any password you provide as being valid, even if you turn "Caps Lock" off while entering the password! If you started the process with "Caps Lock" on, follow the disconnect process referred to in the section entitled "IN CASE THE SYSTEM HANGS" and start the process over! C. CONNECT TO THE SYSTEM Press return one or more times until "CALPOLY>" appears on your screen. Type: CALPOLY> c newunix<return> This will request that the terminal be connected to the Central UNIX site associated with new accounts, "newunix". <RETURN> is the "Return" key on the terminal keyboard. The system should respond with the following after a few moments: login: At the "login:" prompt enter login: new<return> This will log you into the account "new" which will automatically start the account request process. Page ACCOUNT-2
During this process, you may make corrections on the line you are currently entering by using the backspace key (labeled F12 and (BS) on student lab terminals roughly in the middle of the very top row of keys). D. POLICY AGREEMENT You will then be shown a computing user policy statement. Read this statement carefully. While you are reviewing the policy statement, you can move around in it by using the following keys/commands: yes<return> q or no<return> z a <Space> b Accepts the policy statement and continues with the process. Rejects the policy statement and quits the session. moves down one line in the text. moves up one line in the text. moves down one screen in the text. moves up one screen in the text. Once the statement has been displayed, you will be asked if you agree to abide by these policies. An answer of "yes<return>" indicates that you have read the policy statement and agree to abide by it and other policies posted on the system. A "no<return>" response indicates that you disagree with the policy statement and an account will NOT be created for you. An account cannot be created for you unless you agree to abide by the policy statement and those policies which will be periodically posted on the system. If you have questions about this requirement, please contact the Help Desk in Building 14, Room 114 for assistance. E. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS Once you have logged in, read the instructions on the screen. These instructions are followed by a confirmation request that you are ready to proceed. The system will then prompt you for the information listed in the section "INTRODUCTION" above. Enter the appropriate information as the system asks for it, then press return after each question has been answered. F. IN CASE THE SYSTEM HANGS If the system does not respond for more than five minutes, and it is between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, call and report the problem so it can be corrected. If any of the information that you have provided is incorrect, the following message will be displayed after all questions have been asked. Then your terminal will be disconnected from the system. In this case, double check the information you provided. Is it the same as the information that is available from your student records?: TO DISCONNECT IF TERMINAL HANGS DO NOT LEAVE YOUR TERMINAL UNATTENDED! Doing so will leave your potential account open for another person to take if the system responds after Page ACCOUNT-3
you have left the lab. If you must leave, perform the following disconnect sequence: 1. While holding down the control key (usually labeled " Ctrl") and the shift key (usually labeled " Shift") press the numeric "6" key immediately above the "T" and "Y" keys. 2. Release the control and shift keys. 3. Press the lower-case "x" key (DO NOT PRESS RETURN). A few seconds later, a "CALPOLY>" should appear on your screen. 4. Type d 1<RETURN> 5. The network will then prompt for confirmation by printing Closing connection to polylog1 [confirm] At this point, simply type "y", and a few seconds later the "CALPOLY>" prompt should re-appear. It is now safe to leave the terminal. G. PASSWORD The system will ask you to enter a password for your new account. Your password must have 6 to 8 characters, at least one capital letter, at least one lower case letter, and at least one number. Make sure the password you have chosen does not CONTAIN any words or names that could appear in any dictionary. Stay away from passwords which are easily associated with you such as nicknames, birth dates, license numbers, pet's names, etc. Avoid unusual characters such as control characters, special characters (!@#$%^&*) and spaces. NOTE: Your password will not show on the screen as you type! This is to prevent someone else from seeing it while looking over your shoulder. Do not let other users watch while you enter your password, either now or when actually logging into your account later! You will be asked to type your password a second time to make sure that it was entered correctly. Enter the same password again, followed by a <RETURN>. Again, it will not show on the screen. IN CASE OF A DUPLICATE ACCOUNT If the system determines that you already have an account, a different message will be displayed. You may have already had the account added in the past for you (this could have happened in a class that you dropped or had been done by an instructor who never handed out the account memos), or someone else may have obtained your information. In either case go to the the Help Desk in Building 14, Room 114 for assistance. Once the information has been accepted, the account creation process will proceed with the following. Page ACCOUNT-4
WRITE DOWN YOUR LOGIN AND SITE If the passwords match and meet the requirements, the system will then display Internet Address OpenMail Login ID OpenMail Server UNIX user ID UNIX homesite A simplified address which you can use to tell others what your address is. the login ID that identifies you to the OpenMail server. the name of the OpenMail server you must connect to in order to check your electronic mail. entered at the "login:" prompt. the system you should usually log in to. At this point you will be disconnected from the system. Please write down the above information. Do not write down your password: memorize it! Your account may be used on the site specified as your home site after one hour has passed. Do not try to use your account before letting an hour elapse!
