5 PREPARING COLLEGE AND CAREER-READY GRADUATES AchieveTexas College and Career Intiative Goose Creek CISD is committed to providing students with an education leading to high skills, high wage careers that are in high demand in the Gulf Coast, Texas, and/or Globally. In order to provide students for a lifetime of success, GCCISD uses the 16 federally defined career clusters and the AchieveTexas initiative to prepare students for secondary and postsecondary opportunities, career preparation and placement, meaningful work, and active citizenship. GCCISD offers 33 pathways across 15 of the 16 federally defined career clusters. Each pathway combines academics courses with career-related courses. This helps students to understand the relationship between education and careers and engage students in their own learning so they make informed decisions, graduate, from high school and enroll in and complete college. Graduation Endorsements with Coresponding Career Cluster & GCCISD Programs of Study Under House Bill 5, entering ninth-graders for the academic year will declare an endorsement in one of five areas of study: science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), business and industry, public services, arts and humanities, and multidisciplinary studies. This repackaging of the graduation-requirement formula will better define students high school careers, even noting these focused areas of study on their transcript and diploma. Earning an endorsement generally requires the following: A specified coherent sequence of four credits, with at least 2 courses from the same career cluster A 4 th math and a 4 th science credit At least one s, and A final course in the sequence that determines the endorsement. Career and Technical Education in GCCISD offers coherent sequences of courses that satisfy the new graduation requirements for 3 of the 5 Graduation Endorsements. All CTE pathways and courses are open to all GCCISD students. The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Endorsements and Programs of Study include the following: AGRICULTURE Animal Systems Food Products & Processing Systems Plant Systems Power, Structural & Technical Systems ARTS, AV TECHNOLOGY & COMMUNICATIONS Audio, Video Technology Fashion Design Print Technology BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION & MANAGEMENT Business Management CHITECTURE & CONSTRUCTION Architectural Design/Pre-Construction Construction Electrical Technology Pipefitting FINANCE Accounting & Financial Services HOSPITALITY & TOURISM Culinary Arts INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Programming & Software Development Computer Maintenance/Desktop Support Web & Digital Media MARKETING Marketing MANUFACTURING Process Technology Welding TRANSPORTATION, DISTRIBUTION & LOGISTICS Automotive Technician Collision & Repair Logistics Small Engine Technology

7 Career Academies A career academy is a personalized small learning community within a high school. Students apply to an academy and if accepted will take academy courses as a group with other academy students. A career academy involves teachers from different subjects working together as a team. This concept of joining students for several periods each day with teachers, who they come to know well, provides a family-like atmosphere, nurturing close student-teacher ties. Academy students may also participate in required and elective courses outside of the academy, as well as other activities such as clubs and sports. Students in a career academy have a mixture of career (one or two) and academic (usually two or three) classes at a time. The classes meet entrance requirements for 4 year colleges and universities, and if the recommended course sequence is followed, will meet the requirements for graduating with an endorsement. They are linked to industry standards and encourage high achievement. They show students how their subjects relate to each other and the career field. Planning Now For Later Goose Creek CISD ISD is committed to providing all students with the foundation to be successful in any career choice. With the rapid changes in information and technology, many of the careers our students will be employed in have not yet even been developed. Select your courses wisely to help prepare yourself for the challenges of 21st century jobs. An important part of your responsibilities in high school will be to choose and take courses to prepare yourself for the future. Remember, your high school program and your success in it will affect what you may do after you graduate. You do not have to make a final decision now about your plans after high school. You are still growing and changing. You may need time to explore many possibilities before deciding what you will do. You will, however, have to choose a high school program of studies. In choosing your program, it is important to remember that many careers require a college education or further vocational/technical training after high school. Who Can Help You Choose Your Program of Studies? Your parents may be your best advisers in choosing a high school program of studies. They understand your personality and abilities. They know your interests, likes, dislikes, and strengths. They also can tell you about things they have learned from their own education and work, which can help you in making decisions. After you and your parents have read this booklet, talk with them. Discuss with them your thoughts and concerns about high school and your future. Your school counselor can assist you to better understand your goals, high school programs, and careers. Be sure to meet with your counselor for help in deciding which direction to take in high school. Students are encouraged to utilize the career/college center in their school. Be sure to check the internet for valuable sources. You can get ideas from your teachers about high school programs that might be best for you. They know the work you have done in their subjects and will be able to make suggestions about your program of studies. Talk with your principal, too. The advice of your teachers and principal can be very useful to you in making your choices. Other people, who know you well, such as your relatives and friends, can also help you. Consider getting their ideas. There may be some careers that seem interesting to you. If there are, talk with people in those careers to get information for planning your program of studies. They can tell you about their work and the kind of education needed for it. You may want to use this information in choosing the program and courses you will take.
