Explain microbial metabolism and genetics. Explain the mechanisms of pathogenicity. Textbooks: Required: 1. Microbiology, An Introduction, 9 th edition, by Tortora, Funke, & Case 2. Microbiology Place Website and CD-ROM (comes with textbook) 3. Laboratory Manual to Accompany BSL 214, Spring 2009 by Susan Kavanaugh. Posted on Blackboard. Recommended: 1. Study Guide to Accompany Microbiology, An Introduction, 9 th edition, by Berdell R. Funke sk03bsl.f01 2
3 2. A photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory, by Michael J. Leboffe & Burton E. Pierce Lecture Content: Lecture will consist of the following chapters from the above texts. Lecture Topic Text Chapter The Microbial World and You 1 Observing Microbes through a Microscope 3* Anatomy of Procaryotes and Eucaryotes 4 Microbial Growth 6* Control of Microbial Growth 7* Fungi, Protozoa, Helminths, Arthropod Vectors 12* Viruses 13 Principles of Disease and Epidemiology 14 Mechanisms of Pathogenicity 15 Nonspecific Defenses of the Host 16 Immunology 17 Practical Applications of Immunology 18* Antimicrobial Drugs 20* Microorganisms and Human Disease (*some of the material in these chapters will be covered in lab) Lecture Attendance Policy: Attendance in lecture is mandatory. Failure to attend lecture may result in a failing grade in the course. Attendance will be used as a consideration in assignment of the final course grade. Lecture Exams and Grading Policy: 1. There will be three (3) lecture exams and three (3) lecture quizzes during the semester, and one comprehensive final exam (covering material from both lecture and lab). 2. Each lecture exam will be worth 10% of the total course grade and each quiz will be worth 2% of the total course grade. 3. The final exam will be worth 24% of the total course grade, unless a student has been excused from an exam, upon which the final exam will become worth 34% of the total course grade. Laboratory Content: Labs will be used to perform experiments and investigations illustrating lecture principles. Also, lab time will be used to give quizzes, practical exams, and other assignments. Laboratory Supplies: (available at the BCTC Bookstore) 1. A full-length, long-sleeved lab coat that can be worn over your clothing at all times in the lab is required. You will not be permitted to attend lab without one: this is an OSHA safety requirement. 2. a black fine point "Sharpie" glass marker 3. Lab kit. You will make the payment to the bookstore, bring the receipt to the lab instructor and obtain your lab kits. 4. A box of gloves. You will not be permitted to attend lab without one: this is an OSHA safety requirement. Laboratory Attendance Policy: 1. Attendance in lab is mandatory. 2. A student may miss one (1) excused lab without penalty. 3. If a student must miss a lab period, a valid, written excuse (to be determined by the lab instructor) must be submitted. 4. A student s lab average will be penalized five percentage points (5%) for each unexcused lab period missed. sk03bsl.f01 3
4 Laboratory Exams and Grading Policy: 1. There will be three (3) laboratory practical exams given during the semester. 2. Each lab exam will be worth 10% of the total course grade. 3. In addition to the lab exams, 10% of the total course grade will be quizzes, reports, or other assignments at the discretion of the lab instructor. Make-up Work Policy: 1. If a student must miss a lab or lecture exam, he/she must contact that instructor within 24 hours. 2. The student must provide a written, documented, valid excuse (to be determined by the instructor). 3. If the instructor determines that the excuse provided is valid, that exam will be dropped from consideration of the final course grade, and that % will be added onto the final exam (making the final exam worth 34% of the total course grade if a lab exam has been missed.) The missed material will be evaluated on the final exam, which is comprehensive in nature. 4. This option may only be used once. If a student misses more than one lab or lecture exam, they will receive a grade of zero for that exam/lab period. 5. Missed lab work can only be made up during that same week due to the perishable nature of the lab materials and cultures. The student must make arrangements with the lab instructors to attend another lab section if possible. There will be no other opportunity to make-up missed lab exercises, practical quizzes, or practical exams. Final Exam: 1. The final exam will be comprehensive and will cover all material from both lecture and lab. 2. The final exam is worth 24% of the total course grade, unless the student has been excused from an exam, making the final exam worth 34% of the final course grade for a missed exam. Failure to complete or pass the final comprehensive exam will results in an E for the course, regardless of the previous course average. 3. If a student is unable to attend the final exam due to a valid, documentable excuse (to be determined by the instructor), a make-up exam will be arranged at a time agreed upon by the instructor and the student. If this date is after the deadline for grades to be turned in, a grade of Incomplete will be entered until the student has completed the final exam, at which time a grade will be given to replace the I grade. Computation of Total Course Grade: 1. Total course grade will be computed as follows: lecture exams (3) = 30% (10% each) lecture quizzes (3) = 6% (2% each) final exam = 24% (34% if an exam has been missed) lab exams (3) = 30% (10% each) other assignments, quizzes, etc. = 10% 2. A modification of the final grade may be made at the discretion of the instructor based upon effort, professional attitude, attendance, or other extenuating circumstances. 3. The exam grading scale will be as follows: % = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D 0-59% = E 4. For a student to receive credit for this course, he/she must pass (60% or better) both the lecture and the lab portions of the course. If a student fails either lecture or lab or the final exam, they will receive an E for the final course grade. sk03bsl.f01 4
5 Instructional Assistance: Several avenues are available to the student to assist in preparing for this course. Please utilize the instructors office hours. A textbook, study guide, CD, and lab manuals are on reserve in the library. Also, free tutoring is available (hours to be announced). Withdrawal Policy: 1. A student may withdraw from a course without the instructor s consent until Monday, March 9, After March 9, the student must have the signature of the lecture and lab instructors to officially withdraw to receive a grade of W. After March 9, students will not be allowed to withdraw simply for academic reasons. 3. Official withdrawal procedures must be completed into within one (1) week of the time they are signed. 4. Failure to comply with these procedures will result in a grade of E. Other Policies: 1. All food, drinks, gum, and smoking or chewing tobacco is prohibited in all classrooms and labs. 2. Students must be on time for lab. Safety instructions and quizzes are given at the beginning of lab. 3. A student who is late and has missed important instructions may be counted absent and/or may not be allowed to participate in that day's lab procedures, according to the discretion of the lab instructor. Cheating Policy: Cheating will not be tolerated under any circumstances. If a student is determined to be cheating, he/she will be dismissed from the exam and the course with an E. Code of Student Conduct: All rules and regulations set forth in the current edition of the Student Code of Conduct will be followed in this course. Failure to abide by these policies will be grounds for dismissal from the course. If a student has any questions concerning these or any other policies, he/she should refer to this booklet, available in Room 200 OB or at Reasonable Accommodations: If a student has a special need that may require assistance or special accommodations, the instructor needs to be informed at the beginning of the course or as soon as the special need is identified. sk03bsl.f01 5
