About this course: An introduction to the theory and practice of information security. The topics covered include Windows basics, Windows networking, accounts basics, threats, vulnerabilities, and exploits, routes, domain name servers, work groups, domains, servers, access control, authentication and basic cryptography and design of system defensive strategies Course Book: Security and Infrastructure Stanek, William R The Art of Exploitation Erickson, Jon 2008 The Basics of Hacking and Penetration Testing Engebretson, Patrick 2013 COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Recognize basic computer components, the Windows operating system components and secure configuration. 2. Recognize basic networking concepts, Windows networking and Wireless Configuration. 3. Recognize user and groups account fundamentals, basic access controls, User Account Control and issues associated with the administrator Account. 4. Recognize threats, vulnerabilities, exploits, elements of risk, countermeasures to risk, and cyber attacker motivations. 5. Acquire a basic understanding of authentication and cryptography. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: SLO 1: Synthesize the theory and practice of information security in a practical situation. SLO 2: Analyze and apply topics in cyber security relating to computer platforms and web browsers. 2 Due Dates: All course work must be in before the due date posted. Begin course work as soon as possible as technical problems can and will arise. Please notify me in via before the assignment due date if you have any technical issues while completing your work. Discussions: Class discussions are a part of student participation. The discussion revolves around key concepts in the course. Discussions are graded based on the quality not quantity of the post. Students may contribute to other student posts to improve their score. A quality post includes a complete response to the prompt provided. A quality post will contain more than a yes or no response. The post adds value to the discussion and provides additional material such as a link, article or link to a video that adds value to the post. Labs: (7 labs) Labs are designed to give the student hands on experience with key concepts and technologies related to the course. It is recommended that you work on a lab as soon as possible. Labs do not always go as planned so make the best use of your time. Work with other students as needed to complete the labs. Use the Lab Discussion section to collaborate or post any questions you may have. If you encounter problems with completing the labs, you must let the instructor know as soon as possible. Lab discussions are not graded. E- mail is the recommended form of communication. Labs will be graded by the instructor, expect to see a grade for a Lab within 48hrs in Canvas. Incomplete Policy A student who has successfully completed more than 80% of the entire semester course work at end of semester and has communicated with the instructor with a justifiable explanation may be considered for an incomplete grade.
