1 Office of Semester Conversion UNIVERSITY LIBRARY, ROOM Carlos Bee Boulevard, Hayward, California TO: FROM: The Executive Committee and The Academic Senate as Info Semester Conversion Directors (SCD) ASCD 2 September 29, 2015 SUBJECT: PURPOSE: ASCD 2: Creation of a Task Force for Class Session Time Modules and Final Exam Schedules for Semester Calendar For approval by the Executive Committee ACTION REQUESTED: The SCD request that the Executive Committee approve the creation of a task force to recommend time modules and final exam schedules for classes on the semester calendar. We request that the Senate Chair convene this task force immediately. We request that the task force complete the time modules and finals schedule no later than the end of winter quarter We recommend that the taskforce include the faculty currently serving as senate committee representatives on the Semester Conversion Steering Committee (SCSC). Because of their administrative positions, we recommend that Audrey Katzman, Xinjian Lu, Glen Perry, and Lucero Wallace serve on this committee. Recently the ASI board created a task force about a University hour at CSU East Bay. Because of the importance of this topic to students and its relevance to the development of time modules, we recommend that ASI appoint two members from the ASI University hour task force to this time modules task force. Proposed Membership for Task Force on Time Modules and Final Exam Schedules for Semester Calendar: Michael Hedrick, Chair of the Academic Senate Meiling Wu, CAPR representative on SCSC Mitch Watnik, CIC representative on SCSC James Murray, FAC representative on SCSC ZaNean McClain, FDEC representative on SCSC Audrey Katzman, Director, Academic Affairs Budget & Communication Xinjian Lu, Association Dean, CBE and member of SCSC Glen Perry, AVP Special Projects and Semester Conversion Project Manager Lucero Wallace, Director University Scheduling Student representative from ASI University Hour Task Force Student representative from ASI University Hour Task Force Eileen Barrett, Co-director of Semester Conversion Jason Singley, Co-director of Semester Conversion BACKGROUND INFORMATION: During the 2015 winter and spring quarters, the Semester Conversion Co-directors met several times with Audrey Katzman, Glen Perry, and Lucero Wallace to develop class time modules that would be appropriate for our students and workable for our campus on THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY Bakersfield Channel Islands Chico Dominguez Hills East Bay Fresno Fullerton Humboldt Long Beach Los Angeles Maritime Academy Monterey Bay Northridge Pomona Sacramento San Bernardino San Diego San Francisco San José San Luis Obispo San Marcos Sonoma Stanislaus
2 the semester system. Throughout our discussion, we also considered the desire from students, faculty, and staff that our time modules allow for a University hour. We considered the models from several of the CSU campuses--bakersfield, Dominguez Hills, LA, Long Beach, Northridge and Sonoma. We focused on DH, LA, and Long Beach as appropriate models for our campus that allow for both 3-unit and 4-unit schedules. Since we began this work, Cal Poly Pomona has also developed their model for time modules on semesters. See attachment A, a spreadsheet with time module schedules from the six CSU campuses. See attachment B, the current material from Pomona s proposal to their senate on time modules and finals schedule. To the best of our knowledge, the last time that the campus considered time modules was in 2008, when ExCom created a task force for this purpose. The CAPR, CIC, ExCom, FAC, and FDEC faculty appointees represent the key interests of the Senate standing committees, are responsible for regularly reporting to their respective committees, and are funded through the SCSC to work on semester conversion. The ASI student representatives reflect the interest in a University hour. Attachment A: Spreadsheets of time modules from four CSU semester and two transitioning campuses. Attachment B: Time module and finals schedule proposal for Cal Poly Pomona.
