Van der Lans, ISBN: Database Management Systems, 3 rd edition, Raghu Ramakrishnan, McGraw- Hill 2004, ISBN-10: Course Description This course introduces students to databases and database management systems. The course will first present general information about file systems and database management systems. Then, it will introduce data modeling using Entity-Relationship (ER) diagrams and how to do database design using ER modeling. Normalization will then be covered to produce wellstructured and designed database systems. The basics of the Structured Query Language (SQL) will also be covered and students will apply what they learn using Microsoft Access and MySQL. 13. Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the concepts of databases, database management systems, and database applications. 2. Understand the concepts of storage organizations using both file systems and database management systems. 3. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of using file systems and database management systems. 4. Understand data models, schemas, and instances. 5. Understand Entity Relationship (ER) Modeling. 6. Understand the concepts of constraints and relational algebra operations. 7. Understand the Structured-Query Language (SQL) and its Data Definition (DDL) and Data Manipulation (DML) components. 8. Understand the concepts of normalization and functional dependencies. 9. Use problem-solving techniques in designing solutions to assigned projects. 10. Design ER diagrams for real database applications. 11. Convert ER diagrams to relations. 12. Produce well-structured database systems using functional dependencies and normalization. 13. Write effective SQL queries. 14. Produce a technical report for a complete database project. 15. Work effectively with team members. 16. Manage time by delivering projects in scheduled dates. 2

3 14. Assessment Policy Assessment process takes direct and indirect measurements to ensure that learning outcomes and program objectives have been achieved. The assessment includes assignments, quizzes, tests, projects and discussions. The type of assessment is indicated in the weekly plan table and the assessment details are as follows: Assessment Details: Assessment Percentage % Due Quiz 1 5% Week 4 Mid-term 1 20% Week 6 Quiz 2 5% Week 10 Mid-term 2 20% Week 14 Lab Exercises 10% Final Exam 40% Week Plagiarism Policy: As per the University Policy UoN-STC-CR , the following actions (not limited to), without proper attribution (quoting and/or referencing), will attract stringent penalties: 1. To copy the work of another student; 2. To directly copy any part of another person s work; 3. To summarize another person s work; 4. To use or develop an idea or thesis derived from another person s work; 5. To use experimental results or data obtained or gathered by another person; 6. To demonstrate academic misconduct during an exam. 16. Attendance Policy As per the University Absentee Regulations Uon-RR-AP , Absentee warning notice will be issued to the student according to: 1. Absentee Warning 1 has to be issued to a student who has missed 5% of course 2. Absentee Warning 2 has to be issued to a student who has missed 10% of course 3. Drop one Grade has to be issued to a student who has missed 15% of course 4. Barred from Examination has to be issued to a student who has missed 25% of course Note: Students absent from an exam (Quiz, Midterm, or Final exam) will not be allowed to repeat it unless the student is granted excused absence by the Dean. In that case, the student would be awarded at most a D in the substitute exam. 3
