1 CoSci 487 SYLLABUS Introduction to Networks Instructor: Mari Rettke Section: (lec) & (lab) The CompTIA Network + (N edition) examination measures necessary competencies for introductory-level network certification. The Network+ objectives are aimed towards those who have at least 9 months of experience in network support and administration. This is not meant to discourage those who do not have this level of experience. If you successfully completed the CSIT 453 A+ Certification course then you will have a head start on this class. This course includes the material for the CompTIA Network + and the Cisco CCNA exam. This course covers network cables, connectors & devices, network topologies & architecture, wired and wireless networking protocols & standards, OSI model, TCP/IP, IP addressing, subnets, wide area networks, network security & troubleshooting and client/server operating systems survey. Student Learning Content Knowledge and Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will have an understanding of, or be able to apply, the following principles and concepts. 1. Demonstrate sound understanding of network terminology, 2. Identify steps in planning a network installation/upgrade 3. Configure network devices by installing a network according to project specifications. Assessment Tools: Pre/Post Test At the beginning of the semester a pre-test is given. This pre-test is designed to determine the students current level of knowledge and reveal the areas where more work is needed. A percentage of required knowledge for the course is determined. This pre-test does NOT count towards the students grade. This pre-test helps the student to identify their weak areas so that they can spend the most time concentrating on areas where they need help. At the end of the semester an exit test (post-test) is given. This exit test is designed to evaluate the students progress since the beginning of the year. A percentage of required knowledge for the course is determined. The overall improvement in the required knowledge can be shown by comparing the percent difference in the pre-test and post-test scores. Skill Demonstration: In the lab, students will work physically with a computer(s) to create a network. Both peer-to-peer and client/server networks will be created by the students. In the lab, students will work with both wired and wireless networks.

2 Determination of Grade: 1. Attendance: The class meets from 5:45pm to 10:00pm Monday evening. If you decide to stop attending the class, it is your responsibility to drop the class. If your name remains on the roster and you have stopped attending you will receive a failing grade. If for some reason you are unable to attend a class or a lab, you should inform the instructor. 2. Homework/lab work : (15%) Homework assignments will be given each week. These assignments will constitute 10% of your final grade. Homework must be turned in the following week to be counted. If lab work (hands-on) is not completed within the regular lab time, the student is expected to come to the computer lab and complete the assignment. 3. Tests/quizzes: (40%) This class is to prepare you to take the CompTIA Network+ Certification exam. Tests/quizzes will be given each week. These will constitute 40% of your grade. Practice tests are available in the lab. These questions are representative of the questions on the certification exam. The goal of the class is to increase the students knowledge of the course material. Students may spend extra time studying the material and re-take the quizzes to show an increase in knowledge and understanding. The key is not to memorize, but to understand the topics.4. Mid-Term (20%) 5. Final Exam: (25%) Grading Scale: A total number of points from homework, tests/quizzes, midterm and final exam is used to determine the following. The scale used is the 60% scale used by CompTIA. Active participation is expected in this course Students themselves are responsible for dropping a class they no longer attend. If you stop attending a class (or wish to drop a class), YOU MUST DROP THE CLASS YOURSELF OFFICIALLY on or before November 20th (via Internet only). Failure to do so may result in a grade of F in that class. There is a new state policy in effect since 2012 that limits students to three attempts per course. The new three attempt limit considers grades and withdrawals ( W ). Three attempts would include any of the following combinations: W, D, F, NC, or NP. Students will not be allowed to register for any course within the LACCD if there are three recorded attempts for that same course.
