1 Linear Algebra Math 203 section 003 Fall 2018 Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:20 pm to 8:35 pm, in Planetary Hall room 131. Instructor: Dr. Keith Fox Office: Exploratory Hall Room Office Hours: Mondays, Wednesdays: 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. I will also meet with students by appointment but the student must send an explaining the purpose of the meeting and asking me for the times I will be available. Course Description: This course covers, Systems of linear equations, linear independence, linear transformations, inverse of a matrix, determinants, vector spaces, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and orthogonalization. Textbook: Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Fifth Edition, by David C. Lay, Steven R. Lay and Judi J. McDonald. Material to be Covered: We will be covering most of chapters (1-6) of the textbook. 1
2 Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in MATH 114. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given on a bi-weekly basis and will be worth 25 points of your final grade. Homework will be assigned and the quizzes will be based on the lecture as well as the assigned homework. Homework will not be turned in for grading but the material will be in covered in lecture. Exam Materials: Something to write with is the only material that you should bring to an exam. Exams: There will be three exams, and then a final exam. The tentative dates for the three exams before the final are : Exam 1 is Wednesday September 26, Exam 2 is Wednesday October 31 and Exam 3 is Wednesday November 28. If an exam date is moved, then it will be announced in class and it is your responsibility to be in class and to make note of the change. Final Exam: The Final Exam will be in our usual classroom on Wednesday December 12 from 7:30 pm to 10:15 pm. 2
3 Grading: Quizzes will be 25 points. Exam I will be 100 points. Exam II will be 100 points. Exam III will be 100 points. Final Exam will be 100 points. If you score higher on the final exam than your lowest score on exams I, II, or III, then your final exam score will replace the score of exactly one of these lowest scoring exams and be counted twice in the calculation of your final grade. The grading scale for this class will be 90 A 100; 80 B < 90; 70 C < 80; 60 D < 70; F < 60. Honor Code: To pass this class it is mandatory that each students conduct is within the guidelines of the George Mason Honor Code. Among other things, this means that sharing information of any kind about exams or quizzes(either before or during the exam) will result at a minimum in a grade of zero for all parties involved. Violations will also be reported to the university Honor committee where further consequences such as expulsion from the university may be incurred. See for a copy of the Honor Code. Restroom Use During Exams: If you need to use the restroom during an exam, then you must turn in your exam as finished and you will not be allowed to continue taking the exam or retake the exam. If you have special needs, then you need to go through the office of disabilities to get permission to have your needs met prior to any exam. 3
4 Retake Policy on Exams: No single exam will be allowed to be taken after the date that the exam is given to the class. There are no circumstances that will change this policy for any individual enrolled in this class without official accommodations given by the University. Start Policy for Exams: Students should show up at the scheduled start time for any exam. If a student shows up to an exam after any student has finished their exam, then the late student will not be permitted to take the exam.
