Students not doing the orientation online must attend the in-class orientation or they may be dropped. Only students registered in the class or trying to add the class may attend any in-class sessions. Children may not attend any in-class sessions. Mandatory Final: This will be online. Units: 3 Credit units Prerequisite: None Course Advisory: Advisory: CISC 320 and CISS 310; with a grade of "C" or better Acceptable for credit: CSU Course Description This course will provide in-depth explanations of operating system security features as well as step-by-step configuration guides for proper operating system configuration. It also provides the knowledge and skills students will need to know in order to maintain the integrity, authenticity, availability, and privacy of data. Learning Outcomes: evaluate network security from the perspective of the Microsoft Windows client operating system. assess how to secure data using a Microsoft Windows operating system. demonstrate use of the tools required to configure client operating system services. differentiate, describe, and configure file sharing services and file system security permissions in accordance with best security practices. pg. 1

2 compare and contrast the roles of security, ethics, and privacy management issues regarding data storage. define and differentiate user rights and file permissions in terms of security. What you need to take this course: 1. Textbook: Security Strategies in Windows Platforms and Applications; Second Edition, Solomon ISBN you will not be able to complete this course without a textbook. NOTE: It will not be possible to complete this course without the text book; you will need to have your textbook the first week of the course. is 2. You will need reliable Internet access in order to view and turn in assignments. Currently Internet Explorer is giving some students trouble with the course website. I recommend using Firefox which free. The first page on the Moodle.LosRios.edu website before you login has links to download Firefox. Students have also been using Safari, and Google Chrome to access the course website. The course materials are only accessible online by logging in to Rios.edu using your Los Rios student identification number and password. Students should access the course a minimum of 5 days per week. CIS tutoring and assistance in computer-related topics is available to Business Division students on a first-come, first-served basis in B151. Tutoring subjects and tutor availability are posted in the lab and on the web site: 3. IMPORTANT!!! You must have access to a computer with Microsoft Windows 7 Professional installed, and have Administrator rights to that computer. Using an earlier/later version of Microsoft Windows can cause a number of problems for you including not being able to do some parts of course assignments. Using Windows 7 but not the Windows 7 Professional version with Administrative rights can cause an issue on some assignments, if portions of assignments are not done because of this students will not receive credit. You will also need Administrator access to a computer with Windows 2008 Server as there will be a few assignments using this operating system. There are also hard drives available in the B151 computer lab for checkout in the lab that have Windows 2008 Server with Administrator rights available. If you do not own a computer, or have Windows 7 Professional/Windows 2008 Server with Administrator rights the B151 computer lab has removable hard drives that can be checked out and used at the Networking Station area of the B151 lab. CIS tutoring and assistance in computer-related topics is available to Business Division students on a first-come, first-served basis in B151. Tutoring subjects and tutor availability are posted in the lab and on the web site: Rios.edu/stre_lab.html. Note: Students who want to use a Windows Operating System that is newer than Windows 7, can do this. However, the instructor is only able to support Windows 7 Professional with Administrative rights, not other versions of Windows. The labs are written for Windows 7 so students using a later version of Windows may need to research using the Internet to complete some assignments (the labs again are written for Windows 7/Windows 2008 Server). As long as I can see that pg. 2

3 students are completing the assignments correctly using a newer Windows Operating system they will receive credit. You will want to work ahead on assignments if you have another version of Windows 7 that you are trying to use, to see if you have issues with assignments that way you can use the B151 lab if you need to in order to turn assignments in on time. I have also put instructions on the course website about how to install Windows 2008 Server and Windows 7 Professional for students that would like to install virtual software on their computers and install the course operating systems into it so that they can so assignments that way as well. I will be adding students to SCC s DreamSpark agreement with Microsoft so that they have access to free software including Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server that they can download. This can t be done until the adding the final students to the course (usually 2-4 days). There are instructions about how to do this and create a DVD with the operating system on it available on the Microsoft website. Students will be notified through their Los Rios student accounts by Microsoft. The will come from Dreamspark or Microsoft. You will also need to check your spam folder for this , in the past some students for the software went directly to their spam folder. The timing of the from Microsoft varies. If you do not have the operating systems to use for this class you should be prepared to use the computer labs on campus in the event it takes time for Microsoft to students with their Software accounts. Note: Students should have updated Anti Virus software before downloading anything. Windows 7 has anti-virus software included there are other free Anti-Virus software programs such as AVG and Panda that students can get. Students are solely responsible and completely liable for following directions, downloading, and installing any software on their personal computers. If you are not comfortable with this you will need to use the hard drives available for check out in the B151 Lab. Unfortunately I can t be there when students are downloading and installing software on their personal computers. Note: I recommend that students that are using computers other than the removable drives in B151 get an early start on assignments so that if they have problems they can use the removable drives in B151. Note: How to know what version of Windows you have. Click on Start, then right-click on Computer (it s on the start menu), click on properties, and now look at the top of the screen that pops up. This will tell you what version of Windows you have. Note: Students using the removable drives in the B151 Computer lab will need to use a USB drive to save their files one. Do not leave assignment files on the lab s removable drive as another student could take them and turn them in. This is a violation of the Academic Honesty Policy. Note: I also have instructions on the website about how to use VMWare Player which you can install Windows 7 into. I will also be sending student address to get Dream Spark accounts which have a free copy of Windows 7, Windows 2008 Server and lots of other software. 4. Los Rios gmail account: Los Rios gmail will be used for all communications from your professor for this class. Students should automatically have a Los Rios gmail account, please check this during the first 2 days of class to make sure. Students should check their a minimum of 5 days per week for communication from the Professor. pg. 3

4 Please note: Because of viruses, Prof. Anderson does not accept from unknown sources. Therefore, all messages must include the subject CISS 341 and your full name typed in the message, or the may be ignored. Example: CISS 341 Jill Jones. Do not send attachments as they will be removed by the filter. Please use proper spelling as this will help to not slow down my response. Only send your one time. It will be read and replied to as necessary. Use the Reply button to respond to s rather than composing a new message. This will allow me to follow the previous conversation. Type a meaningful subject line and give great detail in your message. An example of a good subject line would be CISS 341 Jill Jones File Saving Question. An example of a poor subject line would be Help or This is Kevin. This does not identify the class or what is needed. 5. You must check your account regularly throughout the course, I recommend checking your a minimum of five days each week. All communication from me will be through the Los Rios gmail system, you should be using the Los Rios gmail system to me if you have questions. 6. You should be comfortable using word processing software, and have reasonable keyboarding skills. All assignments must be typed, and you are responsible for saving all assignments correctly. All work submitted must be typed and submitted through the course website. It is your responsibility to ensure that I can open the files you send. Your work must be compatible with Microsoft Office 2010 or newer applications. Some labs may require you to paste screen shots into an MS Word document. The course website shows the procedure to be used, which is part of the score for each assignment. Rich text format will not be accepted, it makes the files huge which can cause issue with uploading assignments and space on the server. Assignment Screen shots must be submitted showing the entire screen to receive credit. This means that the task bar and everything else on the screen should be showing your screen shot to receive credit including the date and time. The Microsoft Office Suite can be purchased relatively inexpensively at this website This web site and the software they sell are sponsored by the Foundation for California Community Colleges. They sell the entire MS Office Professional suite, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher. If you would prefer not to spend any money, you can download the Open Office Suite for free at; Open Office is 99%+ compatible with all MS Office applications, and best of all, it s FREE. You will have to make sure that you save the document you submit as a Word document. Supplies: USB drive, a 1GB one should be adequate to save a copy of most lab assignments. Make sure you are the only one that has access to your lab assignments, if another student copies your assignments and turns them in this is a violation of the Academic Honesty Policy. Moodle : In this course we will be using a course management tool called Moodle we will not be using D2L. The course web site Rios.edu will be where you will take online quizzes, obtain copies of assignments, a copy of the course outline, etc. The course uses a weekly format to make it simple to see what readings, and assignments are due. There is a Calendar that shows the due dates for assignments, and you will also see an Upcoming Events block that shows the current assignment due dates. The easiest pg. 4

5 way to keep track of assignments is by clicking on the Assignments link and you will see all of the assignments and their due dates. I recommend clicking on the Assignments link and then printing the information for use as an easy reference. You can also click on each individual Assignment upload link to see the due date for an assignment. ***************************************************************************************** Initial Course Requirements and Submittals: Within the first 2 days of class, all students are required to perform the following requirements: 1. Los Rios gmail account: Students should automatically have a Los Rios gmail account, it will be used for all communications from your professor for this class. You will need to make sure your Los Rios gmail account is working. 2. Syllabus and Online Documents: This course syllabus and the online information must be read carefully and in their entirety -- they contain important information about the course content, policies and procedures. We will go over this at the first class meeting as well. There is a copy of the syllabus available on the course website. 3. Online Orientation Quiz: During the first 2 days of class, students must take a short quiz to verify that you understand how to access the course materials and use the Moodle online course delivery system. The syllabus and course documents at the top of the course website have the information to answer the orientation quiz questions. The quiz is located on a link in the course website. NOTE: You must score at least 90% or better on the quiz, or it must be taken again. The orientation quiz can be taken many times before the due date. 4. Update your student profile. The requirement is that you post a picture in your student profile. There are instructions about this on the course website. Please make sure that the picture you use does not offend other students. 5. Course survey to check current student understanding of learning outcomes. Most students will have little knowledge of these in the beginning, this is normal. The same survey will be given at the end of the course to determine if students have increased their knowledge. These are mandatory and a final grade will not be given unless these are taken. There are not many questions. THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE MANDATORY. If any of these requirements are not completed by the end of the first 2 days of class, you may be dropped and a student on the wait list may be selected to take your place. There will also be a Positive attendance form to fill out; this is something the state wants. This is for students to record how much time they are spending working on assignments, taking quizzes and reading course materials during the online portion of the course. Most students will spend about 5-9 hours a week doing this. The form has a session number column, please put in the course number in that location. The Positive Attendance form will be turned in at the end of the course. This must be turned in to receive credit for the course. pg. 5

6 Assignments: This is not a self-paced course, there are specific due dates for assignments. Assignment information will be on the Course Website. All assignments will be due before 11:50Pm, Pacific Time, on the announced due date. We will be doing Lab Assignments that will need to be uploaded to the online course site. There will be quizzes on each chapter & a final exam. Assignments will not be graded until after the due date. Always keep a copy of all work. DO NOT assignments to me. Due to space limitations and virus s attachments are automatically removed by my filter. I will the class when assignments have been graded. You are responsible for saving and uploading all assignments correctly. All work will be submitted through the course website. It is your responsibility to ensure that I can open the files you send. Your work must be compatible with Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013 applications. Assignments must be submitted as Microsoft Word documents or pdf files; rich text files will not be accepted. It is your responsibility to ensure the files are uploaded correctly that I can open the files you send, and that they are the correct assignment files for each upload link. This means you must upload the correct assignment to the correct upload link; otherwise you will not receive credit. Students will submit assignments directly through links in the course website; there are instructions for this on the course website. After you submit an assignment through the link you should see File uploaded Successfully. You should also click on assignment upload links, and you will see a copy of the file you submitted on the website, if you don t you will need to upload again. Make sure you have uploaded the correct assignment to the course website. Format for Assignments: When saving files to send, add your last and first name at the beginning of the filename. Example: AndersonKevin_Chapter1Assignment.doc. Since many people will be submitting the same assignment, it is important to differentiate each file with a unique identifier (your name). Failure to do so may result in your file being overwritten by another student s file. Putting your name in the filename will be part of the grade for each assignment, this starts with the first assignment. It s best to back up your assignments by making two copies, on different storage media. Chapter Quizzes: For each chapter, you will complete a Quiz online. Quizzes may only be taken once. Forums: Each week students will post about something they found interesting in information security and reply to at least one other students post. These should be a minimum of three sentences and have to be in your own words, do not copy and paste something from a source you used. You will need to put a link to the source of the information you used. Due Date Policy for Assignments and Exams: All homework, labs, quizzes and exams are due on or before their due date. Assignments may not be turned in late for any reason, please do not ask. The correct assignment must be turned into the correct assignment upload link to be accepted. This is in fairness to students who have worked hard to get their assignments in on time. Always keep a copy of all work. Also please make sure you submit the correct assignment to the correct upload link as whatever has been submitted is what will be graded. Note: I recommend that you work ahead on quizzes and assignments in the event you have computer, Internet, or other issues that would cause you to upload assignments after the due date and time. Also students should double check that they have uploaded the correct files to the correct assignment upload link. It is easy to check to see if you have uploaded the correct file to an assignment link, just click on the assignment upload link and you will see the file you submitted. Assignments are available in most cases for a week or more. pg. 6

7 Extra Credit Assignments: National Cyber League Challenge. Extra credit for students will also be available by participating in the National Cyber League Competition. It is done through the Internet so you can be anywhere you like to participate. Don t worry if you are new to information security it is done on beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. This is a great opportunity to add something to your resume and learn more about security at the same time. This can also be used to make up points for an assignment that was not turned in. Checking Grades: It is your responsibility to check your grades, by checking the online grade book, and notify the instructor if an assignment you submitted has not been graded. All grades will normally be posted in the grades area in course website within 5 days after the due date for the assignment. I will send an to the class when assignments have been graded. If you submitted an assignment but do not see your grade posted within that time, or have a question about the grade on an assignment contact me immediately via Los Rios gmail. If you do not contact me within 1 week of the assignment due date to let me know there is a problem with a grade on an assignment the current grade in the grade book will remain the same. Collaboration: Assignments must be done independently unless you are told otherwise. In case of doubt ask me before you start working together. Your work should be your own. Another good rule of thumb is that if your hands touch the keyboard or mouse, it's your work. On the other hand, if someone is telling you what to type, it is their work, not yours. Student Code of Conduct: Academic Honesty Policy: Students are required to do their own work on assignments and to work alone on exams. Examples, and the consequences, of cheating are given below. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct in the Sacramento City College Student Guide for additional examples and information click on this link Rios.edu/insidescc/StudentServices/Crisis%20Intervention/Student_Standard_of_Conduct_Brochure.pdf. Cheating Examples (this is not a complete list): 1. Obtaining answers from another student for any assignment in any form and with or without his/her knowledge. In other words a student s course work needs to be secured where another student can't find it and copy it or both students will receive scores of zero on these assignments. 2. Make sure that if you are using the removable drives in the B151 lab that you save all of your coursework on an usb drive and not to the removable lab drive that you are using. Coursework submitted because a student left it available for another student to copy will earn both students involved a score of zero and the Business Division Dean will also be notified. 3. Providing answers to another student during an exam (in any form). 4. Using material during an exam that is not allowed. 5. Copying transmitting or receiving answers from others. 6. Duplicate printing of assignments in any form (electronic, , paper, etc.). 7. Having or using notes, formulas or other information in a programmable calculator or other electronic device without explicit teacher review and permission. 8. Having or using a communication device such as a cell phone, pager, PDA or electronic translator to send or receive information. 9. Taking an exam for another student, or permitting someone else to take a test for you. 10. Asking another to give you improper assistance, including offering money, favors or other benefits. 11. Asking for or accepting money or any other benefit in return for giving another improper assistance. pg. 7

8 12. Providing or receiving information about all or part of an exam, including answers (e.g., telling someone in a subsequent period what was on your exam, or being told this information). 13. Having or using a cheat sheet (a piece of paper with answers, formulas, information, or notes of any kind) that is not specifically authorized by the teacher. 14. Having or using a cheat sheet (a piece of paper with answers, formulas, information, or notes of any kind) that is not specifically authorized by the teacher. 15. Altering a graded exam and resubmitting it for a better grade. 16. Working together on a take-home exam, unless specifically authorized by the teacher. 17. Working together on homework assignments, unless specifically authorized by the teacher. 18. Gaining or providing unauthorized access to examination materials 19. Plagiarism. Consequences of Cheating Academic honesty is expected. Students are required to do their own work. If cheating or plagiarism occurs, a grade of zero will be assigned for the assignment or exam for all students involved. The matter will be referred to the Business Division Dean and the Campus Discipline Officer for appropriate action which could include, but may not be limited to, failing the class or even being expelled from school, depending on the severity and/or number of times an issue of academic dishonesty has arisen during a student s course work. Student Conduct: Netiquette refers to the protocol to be followed when communicating with others on the Internet. In this course, this protocol applies to any course communication. Be aware your professor has access to all activities that occur within Moodle. The Student Code of Conduct must be followed by all students, for more information click on this link: Rios.edu/insidescc/StudentServices/Crisis%20Intervention/Student_Standard_of_Conduct_Brochure.pdf. At the professor s discretion, failure to engage in respectful and academically appropriate behavior may result in you being denied access to the course website, and (i.e., the equivalent of being asked to leave the classroom in an on-campus course). Please, see the web link Netiquette made available in your Moodle course site. Students are required to conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful and professional manner when communicating with other students, lab personnel, instructional aides, and professors. This includes all communications. Lab Rules: The normal Lab Rules apply to this course. If you are not familiar with the lab rules on campus, please use this link to become familiar with them. How to reach me: I have office hours as shown at the top of this syllabus. If you , remember to put CISS 341 and your full name in the subject line of your so that I can identify it as pertaining to the course, otherwise the may be ignored. I will check my Monday Friday a few times between the hours of 9:00am 4:00pm, excluding holidays. Every effort is made to reply to students' questions via as promptly as possible, and within 2 business days. I recommend starting your assignments early, so that you will have time to ask questions. Response time during the online an office hour can be 30 minutes, but is subject to student need, volume, and depth of questions. Please remember this would be the same as a face to face office hour. This means I may not be able to answer all student questions during my online office hour, but will respond to them as promptly as possible within two business days. pg. 8

9 Learning Accommodations: If you are a student with a learning disability, a physical disability, or other special needs, please let me know as soon as possible if you need special accommodations. These discussions are best handled during my office hours or by appointment. All needs which have been verified through the disability centers on campus will be accommodated. Attendance is essential to your success in this course. As this is a short-term course, we move quickly from one topic to the next. Students may be dropped for excessive absences, please see Class drop policy below. Class Drop Policy: In the event, a student decides to drop the class it is the student s responsibility to notify and complete all the necessary documentation with the admissions and records office. Students may be dropped for non-attendance in accordance with the Sacramento City College campus policy: Attendance is very important in an online class. Completing assignments is the only way to document your attendance. You cannot be passive in an online course; you are required to be active in this class. You are expected to attend class each week. I will use the following to document your attendance: completion of tests and quizzes, submission/completion of assignments (through the assignment upload links or discussion forums), communication with the instructor. One week of non-participation (6% of the class) or two weeks with less than full participation will be grounds for being dropped from the class. Although I may drop students for not submitting work and/or participating, DO NOT assume that the instructor will automatically drop you from the class roster. It is the student's sole responsibility to officially drop classes. Please remember to drop the class by the proper drop date to receive a W in the class instead of an F Changes to Syllabus: If necessary the instructor may make changes to the syllabus. I will inform the class of any changes. The final grade in this class will be based on the following Percent Grade 90% - 100% A 80% - 89% B 70% - 79% C 60% - 69% D 0% - 59% F pg. 9
