3 The Terms Module und Module Examination Compulsory Modules are to be completed without exception Compulsory Elective Modules (= Specializations) Modules/elective units are to be elected among a set of specified modules/units according to specified rules. Module Examination A module which can consist of multiple courses will be tested in one examination which normally consists of either one performance or two partial items of performance. # 3

18 Free Attempt and Grade Improvement Free attempt and grade improvement What is a free attempt (fpv)? Can you improve your grade? An exam that is taken for the first time within the normal program length, but is not passed, is considered not taken (= free ); this can be relevant, if the number of resit opportunites is limited. A module that is passed can be retaken once for grade improvement purposes at the next regular exam date. Are there any modules that cannot be improved in grade? Yes: the master s thesis # 18

19 Grade Improvement Which grade counts? The better of the two grades counts. How often can you improve your module grade? Once. Which exam counts, if the grades of the two attempts are equal? The posterior one. Are there deadlines up to when you have to/are allowed to retake an exam for grade improvement purposes? At the next regular exam date. What does that mean, next regular exam date? The next date on which the abstract course/the abstract module is offered or module exam is offered respectively. # 19

20 Grade Improvement What is to be considered, if there are several concrete courses offered for an abstract course? The module grade can be improved, i.e. the grade earned in the course 1 exam can be replaced by a better grade earned in other courses (course 2, 3, or 4) of the same module at the next module exam date; please note that each module can only be taken once. If I am temporarily withdrawn, am I allowed to take a module exam for grad improvement purposes? No. Only failed exams may be retaken in semesters on leave. # 20

21 Grade Improvement When/in which case does an attempt for grade improvement make sense? If you had a one-off gaffe; otherwise it only means additional workload. What do I do, if I aim to improve a module exam grade? Please register again via LSF for the module/exam already passed.* What is the consequence if I miss to register? Grade improvement is only possible if you are registered for the exam.* * Please read the notes on exam registration. # 21

22 Grade Improvement Example 1: 1st attempt: grade 3,7 2nd attempt: grade 3,3 => grade 3,3 counts 2nd attempt: grade 3,7 => grade 3,7 counts 2nd attempt: grade 4,0 => grade 3,7 counts Example 2: 1st attempt: grade 5,0 (= fpv) 2nd attempt passed with grade 4,0 => grade improvement is possible once. Example 3: 1st attempt: failed (nb); grade 5,0 (= fpv) 2nd attempt failed (nb), grade 5,0 => resit opportunity up to the end of the 6th regular semester. # 22

23 Grade Improvement Example: You aim to improve the grade for Accounting I (V1 + Ü1 International Taxation ), grade 3,7 in module exam in the summer term. Accounting I is offered every summer term. i.e. the resit must take place in the following summer term and hence can only be credited for the identical modul Accounting I: International Taxation. Renewed registration for Accounting I # 23

24 Grade Improvement Example: Registration for Projekt: Forschung & Praxis I : Forschung und Praxis 1 (PK + PS) in the winter term; offered every winter term and summer term. precisely: Unternehmensrechnung und Controlling (Hofmann) grade 3,7 You aim to improve the grade in this project course => You have to resit in the summer term; registration for the course Unternehmensbesteuerung (Schanz) as part of the module Projekt: Forschung & Praxis II => no grade improvement in the project course Unternehmensrechnung und Controlling (Hofmann); grade improvement is only possible if the registration is again for the module Projekt: Forschung & Praxis I. Grade improvement in Unternehmensbesteuerung is then possible once. # 24

25 Specialist vs. Generalist Our recommendation: Select your specializations according to the subject-specific foundations and project courses taken. or vice versa Select the subject-specific foundations and project courses according to the favoured specialization/focus. Specialist Generalist # 25

26 Specialist vs. Generalist Specialist vs. Generalist You are identified as a specialist in the diploma supplement, if you acquired subject-specific foundations in the relevant specialization (9 ECTS points), at least one project course in the relevant specialization (12 ECTS points) as well as more than 18 ECTS points in the specialization. Otherwise you are identified as a generalist. # 26

32 Credit Transfer Credit Transfer Semesters, learning agreements, and credits previously accrued at other universities or other degree courses can be credited, if there is no substantial difference in the acquired competences/intended learning outcomes. See the website for details and the application process. # 32

33 Credit Transfer Deadlines for the application to credit transfers The credits were acquired prior to enrolment in the M.Sc. (e.g. transfer between universities) The application has to be brought forward by the end of the 1st semester after enrolment at the LMU. after enrolment in the M.Sc.(e.g. study abroad) The application has to be brought forward by the end of the 1st semester after the ECTS credits were acquired. # 33

34 Incapability to take an exam Incapability to take an exam: Has to be claimed credibly immediately, at the latest before grades are announced. Enforcement after grade announcement or four weeks after the exam took place is useless. The enforcement has to be claimed within 2 or 3 working days at a maximum. # 34

35 Incapability to take an exam immediately means, e.g. in case of sickness during a written exam: Please inform a supervisor, discontinue the exam, and see a physician immediately thereafter. Leaving the exam without an advice means capable. credibly means to submit a medical certificate from a physician or a hospital that describes the symptoms comprehensibly. The relevant forms are available online on the website. # 35

36 Deadline Extensions Deadline Extensions: Requests for deadline extensions necessarily have to be lodged prior to the deadline expiry, not at the moment when everything went wrong and it s too late. Requests upon e.g. relationship problems, language problems, employment and so on will not suffice. In case of physical or psychological illness we require a medical certificate from a doctor. # 36

37 Exam Organisation Exam organisation Comprehensive exam plan: is being released in time before the the first day of classes on the website; it comprises all compulsory exams. Exam registration and deregistration: Please register online for all exams. It is obligatory to register (and deregister respectively) for exams. For registration and deregistration deadlines, see the website. # 37

38 Registration for exams Registration for exams: It is obligatory to register for exams on LSF, because it is up to the students to allocate the exams to the modules. Keyword: polyvalent modules! In case you do not register for exams, it means disadvantages and additional efforts for you. Grades you improved cannot be recorded as grade improvements. => Always remember to register! # 38
