Steps to Creating Your MARA 289 eportfolio in Canvas Follow these steps to create an MARA 289 eportfolio presentation in Canvas. This is the required Canvas eportfolio process for use in MARA 289. Using Submitted/Graded Assignments as eportfolio Evidence To use your assignments as evidence for your eportfolio, you will need to download your assignments to your computer and then manually upload them to your eportfolio presentation. You can download all your submitted Canvas assignments as a ZIP file by performing the following steps: In Global Navigation, click the Account link [1], then click the Settings link [2].
In the sidebar, click Download Submissions button. Click Create Export button When the export has completed, click the Click here to download link. When you are ready to add your assignments to your eportfolio, follow the instructions on page 15 entitled Upload a file or image from your personal files or local files into you eportfolio.
Getting Started I. Login and access your Canvas eportfolio section Login to your Canvas account at Go to your Canvas profile. In Global Navigation (top left corner), click Account link [1], then click the eportfolios link [2]. The eportfolios link, will give you a listing of any of the eportfolios you have created in Canvas.
II. Create your eportfolio To create a new eportfolio, click on the Create an eportfolio button on the right side of the screen. You will be prompted to name your eportfolio, choose a title name that will give sufficient information about who the eportfolio belongs to, e.g. AlfredoAlcantar_Sp2016. You will also have the option to make it public. When creating your eportfolio for your culminating experience, ischool policy requires that it remain private and be shared only with your MARA 289 Advisor.
Once you ve successfully created your eportfolio you will be taken to the eportfolio Dashboard. From the eportfolio dashboard, users can control visibility and other settings: 1. The Getting Started Wizard link will help user customize your eportfolio. 2. The Go to the Actual eportfolio link will show users what others see when they view your eportfolio. 3. Your eportfolio is [privacy setting] heading tells you the current visibility of your eportfolio. If your eportfolio is Public anyone can view it if they know the address. 4. If your eportfolio is Private only those with a non-guessable special link you give them can access the information. The link is available by copying the destination of selecting the Copy and share this link... link or by going to your portfolio and sharing that URL. 5. Ignore this functionality and refer the beginning of this document entitled Using Submitted/Graded Assignments as eportfolio Evidence. 6. Users can download the contents of an eportfolio as a zip file by clicking the Download the contents of this eportfolio as a zip file link. 7. Users can delete an eportfolio by selecting the Delete this eportfolio link. Editing the name and privacy settings of your eportfolio
Open your profile settings link [located in top right corner], click the eportfolios link to access your eportfolios. Click the eportfolio title and click from the left sidebar eportfolio Settings. Type a new name for the eportfolio in the eportfolio Name field or select your new privacy option and click Update eportfolio to save changes to your eportfolio. Building your eportfolio There are two main areas you will be working with for your MARA 289 eportfolio Sections and Pages. I. Creating the sections of your eportfolio Sections are how you will structure the organization of your eportfolio, e.g. Introduction, Statement of Professional Philosophy, Competencies, and Conclusion. Your eportfolio sections are listed along the left side of the window when you are viewing your eportfolio. Each section can have multiple pages inside of it. To organize or add sections, click the Organize Sections link. When you begin a new eportfolio you will have a default Home section, this can be edited or deleted once you create at least one more section. 6
To create a new section, locate the add sections link and click it. To name your new eportfolio section Type your new section name in the section name field Section Name field and click Done Editing. You can rename any section by clicking on the Pencil icon, rearrange sections by clicking and dragging them, or delete sections by clicking the Trash icon.
The sections in your eportfolio can be reordered. Hover over the page title and wait for the (1) cross arrow to appear. Click and drag the section to the new location in your eportfolio organization. II. Creating the pages of your eportfolio Sections Pages are the parts of your eportfolio sections that will contain the content you create, your submissions, file uploads, images, etc. You will add a minimum of one page to each section. You will be creating a separate page for each section of your e-portfolio, so you will name a page one of the following: Introduction Professional Philosophy Competency X (where X is one of A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, or N) Conclusion and Affirmation To create a new page in your eportfolio, click the title of the eportfolio you want to add pages to.
Then you must select the section you want to add a page(s) to. Simply click on the section you want to add Then on the right side of the screen click Organize/Manage Pages link: Click Add Another Page link and then type the name of the new page in the page name field and click Done Editing. When naming your pages label them with simple and direct pages that relay the type of information you would find on that page, e.g. Competency A.
III. Editing your eportfolio Pages How to change the name of your eportfolio page You can edit your page names by clicking on Organize/Manage Pages and clicking the pencil icon [1] and typing the new name of the page in the page name field [2]. To delete a page, click the trash can icon. IV. Preview & Adding content to your pages Select the eportfolio you want to add content to and from the eportfolio Dashboard select Go to the Actual eportfolio:
From your page listings click on the page you want to edit then click Edit This Page Adding content to your eportfolio page Once you have opened your eportfolio page for editing you will have the option of adding multiple types of content to your page. You can add content to your eportfolio in several different ways. Here are the best methods: 1. Rich Text Content 2. HTML/Embedded Content 3. Image/File Uploads
When adding content to your page it will be added in the form of a page section. You can have as many or as few page sections as you want. **NOTE: It is important that you check with your advisor and confirm the setup he/she requires for successfully completing INFO 289. ** Once you ve finished adding all the content to your page you can save your changes and preview your page. To preview your page, click the Preview button. You can save the changes you made by clicking the Save button.
I. Adding Rich Content to Your Page While editing your page, select from the right sidebar Rich Text Content to add a section for adding simple text in the Rich Content Editor. Canvas already creates a rich text content box for each page. Type your content in the text box and use the toolbar to format your text. If you need a reminder on how to use the Rich Content Editor, visit the following URL: Use the Rich Text Content option to add the text portion of your eportfolio content e.g. Statement of Professional Philosophy, Introduction, Statement of Competency, Justification of Evidence, Conclusion and Affirmation.
II. Adding HTML/Embedded content to your eportfolio Click on the HTML/Embedded Content link to add an HTML content box to your eportfolio: Edit the HTML content box by typing in the text box or pasting HTML code into the box. (This code is an embedded tweet.) Click the Save Page button to save the changes you have made. Click Preview to view the code you have entered
You can then preview the page and view the code you added. III. Upload a file or image from your personal files or local files into you eportfolio. You can upload files or images and use previously uploaded files or images from your personal files in your eportfolio. This is necessary if you have discussion posts you ve saved or evidence you ve gained outside of school assignments. You can upload media (video, audio, image) files or text files (word docs, PDFs, txt files, HTML, etc.) Click to edit the page you want to add content to and then click Image/File upload
You can add a file from your local files (files stored on your computer/tablet) or you can add a file that is in your personal Canvas files. Add a file from your local files: select Choose File A pop-up window will appear in your browser. Navigate to the file you want to upload, click on the title and click Open to upload the file or picture.
Add a file from your Canvas files: click on My Files Once you have uploaded the file of choice, click Select/Upload File to add it to your eportfolio page. Click the Save Page button to save the changes you made.
Organizing Your Page Content **NOTE: It is important that you check with your advisor and confirm the setup he/she requires for successfully completing MARA 289. ** All the content boxes on your eportfolio page can be reordered. To reorder the content boxes, you must be in edit mode. Hover your cursor over the double-edged arrow in the content box. You can then click on the content box and drag to reorder. Deleting Content Boxes from your eportfolio page If you want to remove any content boxes from your page you can click on the trash can icon while you hover over the content box. You will then be prompted with an alert box asking if you want to delete the item. Click OK.
Once you have finished working on your page, click Save Page or click Preview to view. Enabling comments to your eportfolio You can enable commenting on your eportfolio, this will allow those who have access to your eportfolio to leave you feedback about your content. Once you have opened your eportfolio, select the page you want to enable commenting Click the Edit Page button. Click the Allow Comments on This Page checkbox. You can also make comments public by clicking the Make Comments Public checkbox. Click the Save Page button:
Below the content of the page, there is a place for comments. You can add a comment by typing in the text box [1] and clicking the Add Comment button [2]
Sharing your eportfolio (Securely and Privately) The privacy of your eportfolio and its content is very important to both the ischool and the greater SJSU academic community. Its importance becomes more paramount as you will need to share your eportfolio with your MARA 289 advisor throughout your culminating semester. Canvas s eportfolio platform was chosen by SJSU as the best tool for securely sharing and protecting your content. From anywhere in Canvas, click on your Account button (item 1) and then select eportfolios (item 2): Click the title of the eportfolio.
All eportfolios are, by default, private. The Canvas system allows you to share your eportfolio on the open Web while securely protecting its privacy. Under the heading Your eportfolio is Private, you will see the private and secure share link to your eportfolio: Option 1: Right Click to Copy Link Right click on Copy and share this link to give others access to your private eportfolio to have the option to select Copy, and then paste the link in an or other sharing utility.
Option 2: Copy Link in Address Bar Once you click Copy and share this link to give others access to your private eportfolio, a link will appear in your address bar. Highlight the link, right click it to have the option to select Copy, and then paste it in an or other sharing utility. Important Information Regarding Share Link Always use main eportfolio link that is provided avoid using sub-links from within your eportfolio When you submit your eportfolio for review, always share the link listed under Your eportfolio is Private. Though you may be tempted to share links to your competencies from within the portfolio, those sublinks will work inconsistently based on your reviewer s browser and operating system. The main link provided will always work. Test the link anonymously Please test your link using a Canvas-supported browser that is not logged into Canvas. This allows you to see the eportfolio from a third person perspective Consider using a shortened link (via bit.ly) As the default link is quite long, it may be in your interest to use a service like bit.ly to create a short, customized link that is much easier to share and keep track of.
