2 Logging into Admin Type your web address into a web browser followed by /wp-admin e.g. NB see page 9 of this document Type your username and password in the login screen and press submit. Your username is: Amanda Your password is: *Cn7hs3mubw Once you have logged in you will be re-directed to the Dashboard. This is where you can access all pages and other custom features which make up the bulk of your site. The following pages will explain how to manage these features. When editing the way to move from page to page is to go to Visit Site. To go to the page that you wish to edit click on Edit Page in the top navigation bar. 3 Using About Us as the example *Visual Editor has been installed in your website CMS (Content Management System) Classic Mode provides complex options for editing pages and is best used after practice with the Frontend Editor. Click on Frontend Editor and, when you scroll over the text or images this will provide access to easy editing tools Click on the editing pencil and this will open the editing screen Managing your website s content in WordPress Page 3 of 9

4 Editing text Your Website s Pages On the left-hand side column you will find the Dashboard navigation. Select All Pages Select page 2 to locate Test Page Editing an Existing Page Go to Pages > All Pages Managing your website s content in WordPress Page 4 of 9

5 Click on the page title Click on edit > make the changes required > click on Update Unpublishing Pages without Deleting the Page Go to publish on the right hand side of the page Click Edit and then Draft Deleting a Page Shortcodes Anywhere you see text surrounded either side by a square bracket, be sure not to disturb the square brackets. These are Wordpress Shortcodes. You can edit the text but be careful not to remove square brackets. You will see other examples of shortcodes throughout the site s back-end when editing pages. 6 You can find your site s custom shortcodes in the editor toolbar, in page edit mode: First make sure your toolbar is set to Visual (not Text) These are the Westmont shortcode icons: Scroll over each icon to identify its value Links Inserting a link to an external website Select the text you wish to link from > Click on the link icon Type in or paste the url into the first field in the pop-up box (make sure it begins with Managing your website s content in WordPress Page 6 of 9

7 Select Open link in a new window/tab (if you prefer a new browser window to open when the link is clicked on) Type in a title Link Text - (this is good for SEO and is the text which appears in a tooltip when the user hovers over the link) Click on Update Inserting a link to an internal web page Select the text you wish to link from > Click on the link icon In the bottom half of the pop-up window, scroll down the list of web pages and select the page you wish to link to Click on Update Adding a link to a PDF file or other Download File Select the sentence you will link from, or type it in (e.g. click here to download brochure) Click on Add Media Click on Upload Files Browse your computer for the document and select Click on Insert into Post Update Managing your website s content in WordPress Page 7 of 9

8 Removing a link Put your cursor inside the link to be removed. Click on the broken link icon in the toolbar Styling Text To give lift to your pages, make the first paragraph stand out. In page edit mode > select the first paragraph text > select Heading 3 from the Paragraph drop-down Click on the Update TIP Experiment with style options to see which one best suits your needs. Click on the Preview Changes to see how it will look before you save the changes to the page. Before trying a different style, be sure to undo first, otherwise you will be adding layer upon layer of styles in the html source code which will have unpredictable results in the browser view. News Articles Creating a New Post Click on Posts > Add New Type in the news article title name Type in or paste the content in the Content field Highlight the first paragraph and select Heading 3 from the Format drop-down Managing your website s content in WordPress Page 8 of 9

9 Select relevant category, e.g. events Press Publish when you are ready to publish the post When pasting information, first click on this icon in the toolbar. This will ensure that you paste in plain text and avoid copying in messy source code from Word (or other software program you are copying text from). Do this every time you paste information into any content field throughout the Wordpress content management system. TIPS News posts appear in the creation date order. If you want to add an image, a link or a download to a blog post, see Images / Photos on page 7.
