If the AED determines the person s heart needs a shock, it tells the rescuers to stand back so a shock can be safely given through the adhesive electrode pads attached to the person s chest. Some AED s will tell the user to push a button to shock, and others will provide it automatically after giving rescuers an all clear warning. The training and assessment is normally completed within a six month period, during which time the staff will register for the programme, complete an initial skills assessment and develop their own individual learning plan. Over the learning period the evidence will be collected from their workplace and will be combined with observations undertaken by the assessor.
