4 The team OpenSky Prime contractor Nitel Sub contractor Italian based company, main Italian distributor of INTERNET VIA SATELLITE. At the moment counts more than customers in Italy. Opensky is actually installing new system per day and can count on more than 1500 installer in Italy. Opensky has also recently launched the offer for ADSL and VDSL connectivity. Opensky is in contact with Telecom Italia Wholesaler, Fastweb Wholesaler, Clouditalia. Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per Trasporti e Logistica is an Italian research center. NITEL is participating with the Research Unit of Università of Rome Tor Vergata (UTV) which is a University group in particular specialized in satellite systems. Specifically, NITEL and the identified key personnel have a deep and comprehensive background on satellite communications, protocols, networking, Linux systems and embedded devices and have available complete satellite based simulation and emulation platforms. 4

8 What to improve When defining the algorithm we need to consider specific rules that allows Optimize performance Optimize User experience Increase capacity/aggregated volume TBD peak throughput Video streaming (rich media), mainly when considered single user with bad ADSL General improvement by increasing volume/aggregated traffic in multi-user environment 8

9 First approach Target features Provide connectivity to a CPE (Smart Balancer) by means of at least 2 channels (1 DSL+1 SAT) Provide access to the INTERNET to the CPE by means of a single Public IP Select the CPE outgoing routing of each connection between DSL or SAT on the basis of simple rules SAT failover if DSL link goes down (and vice versa) Optimize latency: ACK always via terrestrial This reduce the delay of SAT of about 50% Platform End to End architecture Standard HW for CPE and defined OS Remote control of the CPE for diagnostic and metrics KPI of the network and for the users 9
