Digital Voice: the next step in the UK s digital transformation Rob McLaughlin BT Redcare Phil Cain BT Digital Voice Engagement Team 1
The dawn of a new era We re on the verge of a new era fully digital telephone services. BT intends for all its customers to be using fully digital telephone services by Today, telephone calls are the only form of communication that travel over networks which have not been part of the digital revolution. Digital voice services from BT will keep the reliability, trust and familiarity of today s services while enabling exciting new benefits and features. This is an international trend. Other global communications companies (Germany, Japan, Sweden, etc.) are ahead of us in the process of upgrading to digital telephone services. BT is planning now and starting early. The process of upgrading customers to digital telephone services will be gradual, with full engagement with customers and industry to make this a seamless transition. This is the next step in the UK s digital transformation. 2
This is an international trend Global telecommunications companies are rapidly pursuing digital approaches. Many other telecommunications providers are already progressing digital strategies with ambitious timescales. Deutsche Telekom have completed the migration of their customers to digital telephone services in Macedonia, Slovakia and Croatia Today more than 90% of Swisscom s customers are using fully digital phone services. 3
Digital voice benefits Digital voice for Consumers Digital voice customers will benefit from simpler, more flexible communications services with features such as: Helpful and easy to use calling features e.g. nuisance call blocking at the touch of a button Crystal clear voice calls A new generation of phones Automatic divert to mobile Integration between broadband and mobile services true convergence. Digital voice for small businesses Big business benefits for small businesses, such as: Enhanced IVR, simplified unified communications, click to dial, etc. Bundled micro business proposition mobile IP voice and data true convergence Enhanced cloud voice services Crystal clear voice calls A new generation of phones Automatic divert to mobile. 4
What s changing? The telephone service is changing from analogue to digital. It can be delivered over fibre and copper networks. All connectivity is via the customers router (provided by their communications provider). 7 Interim solutions Because we have no control or visibility on the special services in customers premises, we ll always advise customers to contact their special services supplier ATA on the back of the router - There will be an ATA on the back of the router which will supply 50V and dial tone. - If using the ATA isn t suitable the customer may be offered an engineer visit to connect the customers wired extension to the ATA in the hub. Flagging Special Services customers - We ll try our best to identify and support customers that may be impacted by looking in our call records the phone number special services devices are using to contact their ARC s Restoration process - In the unexpected event of an unforeseen incompatibility with Digital Voice, customers may be offered to revert to a WLR product. - This is only a temporary solution while the industry becomes all IP compatible. 7
Digital Services Lab BT has built a test facility for special services suppliers to test their equipment in BT s new all IP digital world. The lab launched in July 2018 at Adastral Park, BT s R&D headquarters near Ipswich. We ve created an environment as close as possible to customers premises that includes: All types of BT Consumer and Business lines. BT Consumer and Business routers. Possibility to simulate different line performance levels. Possibility to simulate real world data usage. We ll keep improving the lab with the feedback from suppliers. Questions and bookings at 8
When? Special services engagement ramp up 5 th of July 2018: new test facility opens at BT s R&D site. May to July Openreach WLR closure consultation period. End of 2018, BT launches its first all IP products All BT s voice customers are using digital telephone services December Openreach plans to give 5 year notice for closure of PSTN & ISDN WLR in Dec September Openreach plans to restrict sale of PSTN / ISDN lines, so no new sales from this time. Existing lines will be supported until December
Things you need to know When a customer migrates to fully digital telephone services, all connectivity is via the customer s router (supplied by their communications provider). Digital telephone services do not run over extensions in the same way as analogue services. Extension wiring can cause broadband interference. It is recommended that customers remove all extension wiring and rely on wireless phones (known as DECT phones, used by 60% of BT s customer s today). You will need to test your products to ensure any existing devices customers may have connected to their analogue service will work in a digital voice world. All communications providers (CPs) will have their own transformation programmes, running over different timescales and using different technologies. Testing your equipment with different communications providers will be key to understanding what will and won t work on different services. A new digital world opens up new possibilities for innovative services that can be provided for vulnerable customers e.g. advanced telehealth services. 10

What are BT Redcare doing about All IP Migration? Working with our colleagues in BT Digital Voice to inform the F&S industry of the changes and possible impact to their Special Services. Carrying out in-depth testing of our products in the new digital test labs. Engaging with other Communication Providers to test compatibility on their networks Work with ARCs to identify telephone numbers using Redcare signalling * New Next Generation product portfolio announced at IFSEC In short.we are Future Proof!

Interim solutions ATA on the back of the router - There will be an ATA on the back of the router which will supply 50V and dial tone. - In case of issues, customers will be advised to plug their existing device into the ATA port. - This is one of the scenarios supplier will be able to test in the lab. Voice Reinjection Kit - If using the ATA isn t suitable the customer may be offered an engineer visit to connect the customers wired extension to the ATA in the hub. - Openreach is already rolling the required NTE5C sockets (currently installing c. 2m p.a.). That allows customers to easily self install a voice reinjection face plate when needed. Restoration process - In the unexpected event of an unforeseen incompatibility with Digital Voice, customers may be offered to revert to a WLR product. - This is only a temporary solution while the industry becomes all IP compatible. 15

Advice for Alarm Signalling Users: Plan Now Will your current products work tomorrow? Be aware that you may lose or compromise protection if you transfer to a new digital service without checking if your current signalling is compatible! Consult with your Fire &Security suppliers regarding your systems compatibility and whether they need to make any changes or adjustments. Be prepared to upgrade to more robust/resilient products to stay fully protected.upgrading to dual path or installing the new Redcare Ultimate Don t forget to check with your Insurer ref possible changes or loss of protection Be careful of incorrect or misleading advice - Speak to BT Redcare if unsure. As part of BT, we are best placed to keep you updated!
BT Redcare and All IP - Summary Redcare GSM or Classic The Classic & GSM products are reliant on the physical copper infrastructure, and not the PSTN network. This means they use the copper link from customer premises to the exchange. Secure IP, Secure Fire IP and Solo These products do not use PSTN so are also not affected Redcare Secure 2, 3 and Fire The Redcare Secure range has IP connectivity built in, so Secure 2, Secure 3 and Secure Fire will need small adjustments to continue working in the new digital world. Installers will just need to supply and install an Ethernet cable into the broadband hub. Or could revert to wireless only. Other signalling products Any company that provides a special service such as alarms that uses PSTN will need to ensure that their products and services will continue to work in the new digital world. BT's test centre will be available to all suppliers to test their products to ensure service continuity in a fully digital world 19
