Efficient Aggregation for the Enterprise and Carrier In the large enterprise, where Gigabit Ethernet is now commonplace, and with forward-thinking carriers deploying next generation IP/Ethernet networks, Allied Telesis leverages Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology to provide wirespeed, non-blocking, time-critical secure aggregation over the existing infrastructure. If requirements call for multi-rate and multi-protocol aggregation, Allied Telesis offers modular products which can adapt to varied rates and provide a pay-asyou-grow approach. xdsl/fttx Network with Active CWDM Transport Service providers seeking to deploy the IP Triple Play are often faced with a limited fiber transport capability. This becomes a major issue when video subscription rates increase beyond the capacity of the available fiber. This issue can be cost-effectively resolved by introducing CDWM optical multiplexing of different data streams down the existing fiber. In this example, a service provider is using the Allied Telesis CDWM platform to optically multiplex and transport four concurrent Gigabit video streams from the access network. Unused CWDM capacity is available for future expansion. This example can also be scaled to carry multiple 10G transport streams by the drop-in replacement of the with Allied Telesis AT-LX44000 platform Series Switch Central Office Amortize Fiber Costs over Multiple Services For networks which rely on leased fiber to connect remote locations, Allied Telesis offers solutions to help amortize the costs of leased fiber over multiple services as well as to take full advantage of the bandwidth on the fiber. Allied Telesis optical products leverage fiber s ability to transport multiple wavelengths of light on the same fiber span.this allows network operators to add services to the fiber already leased today. 2 Applications Applications Municipal Ethernet Network with Passive CWDM Transport Municipalities and cities often use leased-fiber to build their own backbone networks. A cost-effective approach to building these networks is to deploy inexpensive passive optical add/drop multiplexers that enable hopping between municipal buildings. By allocating each building a unique optical wavelength, multiple streams are transported over a single fiber pair, with no time delay or data security issues. This example shows a municipal network connecting multiple remote buildings using Allied Telesis at the central office and AT-WG2310 add/drop optical multiplexers at each remote site. Fiber cables are used to inter-connect the buildings, and these have to carry both voice (telephony) and data. To ensure maximum reliability of the network, the network is designed as a fiber ring. Data normally flows on one part of the ring, with the last part of the ring being for backup purposes.thus the at building 1 connects directly with the main at the main building. However, by deploying two Add/Drop multiplexers at building 1, the backup path involves passing buildings 2 and 3, before reaching back to the main building. Each remote building therefore has two Add/Drop multiplexers, one for telephony, and one for data. In total, there are six discrete wavelengths travelling on the fiber. 3 Product Features Today, service provider customers demand more bandwidth and a diverse mix of services while maintaining an economical subscription cost. Allied Telesis Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) portfolio enables you to take the fiber network as it is today and offer a new mix of applications at a cost that both keeps your customers pleased and allows you increased profitability. Allied Telesis provides two types of optical networking products - passive and active. Active CWDM Most of today s networks are based on active components at the network core and at the end-points, as well as in the repeaters, relays and other devices inbetween. By active components, we mean devices which require power of some sort, and are generally comprised of processors, memory chips or other devices which are active and processing information in the transmission path. LightExplorer Active CWDM Platform The LightExplorer optical transport platform uses Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology combined with a modular line card format to enable multiservice transport up to 2.7Mbps to travel up to 80km on a single fiber pair. The 8 slot multiservice chassis has an integrated CWDM multiplexer which combines the individual wavelengths from the installed line cards. By integrating the CWDM technology inside the chassis, installation, turn-up, and configuration time are all reduced while maintaining overall ease of use. AT-LX44000 Multi-protocol WDM Transport System Ideal for service providers and metro Ethernet networks and other networks with a need to backhaul heavy network traffic, the AT-LX44000 Multi-protocol WDM Transport System features four 10G interfaces in a single 1.5RU modular chassis with integrated management and optical line protection. By multiplexing four multiprotocol 10Gigabit links across a single 40G fiber, the AT-LX44000 can handle the high bandwidth data demand and still provide a cost-savings over more expensive DWDM/SONET/SDH solutions. Passive CWDM With passive optical networks, all active components between the network core and the end-points are eliminated, and passive optical components are put into the network to guide traffic based on splitting the power of optical wavelengths to the end-points along the way. Passive CWDM Platform Providing a cost-effective way for network administrators to scale bandwidth requirements over existing fiber infrastructures, the passive Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) platform enables secure multiple fiber connections across single fiber pairs. Designed to meet the unique and diverse demands of multiservice networks, the wall- or rack-mountable can aggregate up to nine CWDM wavelengths from multiple sources, and then either transport all wavelengths to a single location or distribute them across several locations. Also, when wavelengths terminate at one location, they can then be re-used for other connections - a process that allows for efficient, flexible, and scalable solutions. Most customers prefer to build active optical networks, as these networks offer the advantage of being manageable. 4 Active CWDM LX44000 Series 10G LightExplorer Optical Transport Platform The LX44000 series utilizes Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology in a modular 2RU, line-card format to enable up to 40Gbps multiservice aggregation and transport across a single fiber pair. Each line-card is capable of accepting SDH, SONET or 10GbE Ethernet via a front loaded XFP module. Multiple services and protocols can be combined natively over a single fiber pair. The AT-LX44000 also incorporates a high-speed internal fiber fail-over switch, thus maintaining backhaul connectivity should a fault occur with the primary backhaul cable. Each line-card is capable of speeds from 100Mbps through 2.7Gbps and may use either a speed specific SFP or a multi-rate SFP from Allied Telesis AT-SP series portfolio. By integrating cost-effective CWDM technology in the chassis, installation, turn-up, and configuration time is reduced. Multiple services and protocols can be combined natively over a single fiber pair. Allied Telesis has also focused on ease-of-use to keep network design considerations simplified while maximizing the available bandwidth on the fiber. 5 AT-WD1008 Gigabit Ethernet CWDM The AT-WD1008 is a product designed for Gigabit Ethernet environments in both the enterprise and carrier markets. At only 2RU in height, up to 8 GBIC interfaces can be multiplexed together for transport up to 70km*.The GBIC slots allow for varied optical GBIC modules from Allied Telesis to be inserted to meet specific interface requirements.the AT-WD1008 also performs a full regeneration, retiming, and reshaping of each of the 8 GbE ports to maintain signal integrity across the fiber span. Allied Telesis has designed the AT-WD1008 for ease-of-use by integrating the multiplexing functionality into the chassis which reduces turn-up time and eliminates the need to manually configure the WDM filters. SNMP, Telnet, and serial management are all offered on the optional management module. Redundant AC or DC power supplies are available along with a field replaceable fan module for added protection. All wavelengths can either be transported to a single location or dropped at multiple locations using the standalone add/drop multiplexers. Also, wavelength re-use is possible by dropping the wavelength at one location and re-using it elsewhere.this saves network administrators sparing costs for both the CWDM optics as well as the passive series. Due to the modular nature of the 1RU series, entry costs are lowered and a pay-as-you-grow approach can be taken.
