Section 1 Overview Panasonic Hybrid IP-PBX with KX-TDA0480, IP Gateway Card, will allow organisations to route both voice and fax communications over digital data networks. The KX-TDA0480, designed to be easily integrated into existing LAN/WAN environments, seamlessly bridges Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and analogue telephone with digital data networks without interrupting or compromising ongoing data communications. Because communications do not take place over conventional telephone networks, the high cost of long distance communications is virtually eliminated. Getting Started 3

1.1 Example Network Diagramme 1.1 Example Network Diagramme The following diagramme illustrates a simple VoIP network connecting Hybrid IP-PBXs at 2 different locations. The IP Gateway Card converts outgoing voice or fax signals into IP data packets for transmission. On the incoming side, it reverses this process and translates the packets back into appropriate voice or fax signals. 6 1.2 Network Devices and Numbering Plan Notes Recommended IP Networks: the IP Gateway Card's quality of performance depends on the type of network in use. For instance, transmission delays due to congestion on the network and inadequate service characteristics of Internet Service Provider (ISP) can both contribute to loss in voice communications. Manageable networks (e.g., LAN) in which static *1 IP addresses can be used provide better quality of service compared to unmanageable networks such as the Internet. Firewalls: a firewall protects the internal networks of an organisation against unauthorised penetration from outside. However, routing a VoIP network through a firewall may cause performance degradation. Check with your network administrator of the existence of firewall Numbering Plan Example This section describes the network numbering mechanism based on the previous example diagramme. Please configure your network referring to this example. IP Addressing Information IP addressing information is typically supplied by a network administrator. Consult your network administrator for specific values. Description Los Angels Office Chicago Office Gateway IP Address Route IP Address (Firewall or Router) The Gateway IP address identifies the location of each unit in the network during VoIP communications. A unique IP address must be assigned to each unit. When the IP Gateway Card is routed through a firewall, the internal IP address of firewall becomes the Gateway address to be associated with the IP Gateway Card instead of the router IP address Subnet Mask Address Each network location has a subnet mask address that helps to define which digits of an IP address are used for the network address and the host address. Each Gateway IP addresse must fall within the same subnet as that of the router shared by the units (default) (default) *1 Dynamic IP addressing (using DHCP/BOOTP) is not supported. 6 Getting Started

Section 5 Optimising Performance Getting Started 35

5.1 Preventing Problems 5.1 Preventing Problems Although the features of the IP Gateway Card go a long way toward assuring clear voice communications and error free fax transmission over digital data networks, some network conditions can cause performance degradations Voice Volume In some applications, voice volume may be either too low or too high. The gain control feature operates on both the incoming and outgoing sides and is referred to as the PAD control. The IP Gateway Card is able to optimize the gain or loss level of the voice signals. In most cases, it should not be necessary to modify the default PAD In (PAD value of the voice signals coming in to the unit)/pad Out (PAD value of the voice signals going out from the unit) settings. Indications that some adjustment is required are: Voice level too low: Increase gain by decreasing PAD level. Voice loud/distorted: Decrease gain by increasing PAD level. Excessive background noise: Decrease gain by increasing PAD level. To configure, please refer to Section Configure Gateway Units (KX-TDA0480) of IP Gateway Card Installation Manual Transmission Delays Transmission delays can cause delays and loss in voice communications and fax transmissions. These conditions typically arise when there is a high traffic on the LAN/WAN, causing excessive packet collisions. One preventative measure is to install Hybrid IP-PBX so that the number of transmission hops is kept to a minimum. In the figure below, the Hybrid IP-PBX is located as close to the WAN interface as possible. Too many HOPS! Better! (IP PBX located nearest WAN access point) Router Router Switch Switch Switch Switch IP PBX Hub Hub IP PBX 36 Getting Started

5.1 Preventing Problems Priority Control Some routers permit the configuration of priority control features. This allows the router to be configured to give higher priority to packets with high priority flags. The priority control feature should be used when available. To configure, please refer to Section Configure Gateway Units (KX-TDA0480) of IP Gateway Card Installation Manual Recovery Delay and Jitter Buffer When voice signals are packetised and transmitted, individual packet can take different paths through the network and arrive at the destination at varied timings (Jitter). The IP Gateway Card supports a secondary Jitter Buffer (max ms) in which the packets are accumulated temporarily for processing to compensate for network congestion problems. To configure, please refer to Configure Gateway Units (KX-TDA0480) of IP Gateway Card Installation Manual Internet, Intranet, and Virtual Private Networks (VPN) Manageable networks (e.g., Intranet, Leased Lines, VPN) provide better quality of service compared to unmanageable networks such as the Internet. When implementing a VoIP network, care must be taken when assessing bandwidth requirements. The IP Gateway Card uses 12 k per port when in use. Serialisation delays to the WAN are lower when higher bandwidths are used. When using the Internet/VPN, the ISP plays an important role in reducing the variable delay in the WAN. A regional or national ISP will usually have better connectivity with the backbone and will be able to guarantee greater service reliability than a local city ISP. When using VPN facilities, delays may be introduced due to the additional processing time required for encryption processing. Getting Started 37
