1 SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED Solution Evolutionary Design, Revolutionary Performance
2 A Proven Structured Connectivity Solution With Gigabit Power and Performance You re planning for the long run. And you can t afford to upgrade your cabling infrastructure every few years. That s why Lucent Technologies designed the SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED solution to go the distance. Every component of the channel that connects electronics to the PC has been upgraded significantly to create the GigaSPEED Channel of Excellence, giving you optimal performance end to end. But the proven SYSTIMAX design hasn t changed. That means the solution you install today will support your present needs while keeping you on track for tomorrow s faster technologies and more powerful applications. With 15 patents pending, the GigaSPEED Channel of Excellence is the latest in a long and distinguished history of Bell Labs innovations. Evolutionary design and revolutionary The GigaSPEED Family of Products performance make this solution the most important development in connectivity since the introduction of Category 5. The result is a connectivity solution you can implement today, and grow with into the future. Investing in the Right Infrastructure Today Will Pay Off in the Long Run We know that you make Information Technology (IT) decisions based on business needs not on what new technologies can (or promise to) do. Your commitment to a particular technology platform will depend on which applications you re going to run down the road. With so many new applications and technologies on the horizon, it s no surprise that some IT managers are not ready to make a decision. But two things are certain no matter which applications you run, you re going to need more bandwidth. And no matter which technology you choose, it has to be fast. If your current cabling infrastructure is less than CAT 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), it probably won t be able to support your business needs five years from now much less in 10 or 20 years. It will be costly to upgrade every few years. And most likely you re not ready to step up to an all-fiber network. There s another answer: the Lucent Technologies SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED solution. A typical GigaSPEED installation combines SYSTIMAX OptiSPEED TM fiber in the riser and campus with UTP copper in the horizontal. This combination can give you all the performance you need today while providing a pathway to future applications and technologies. Why Your Infrastructure Investment Is Critical More demanding applications. More powerful computers. Increasing user expectations. The demands on your infrastructure are increasing constantly. That s why it s important to invest in this revolutionary connectivity infrastructure today. Installing a SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED solution will prepare you to meet these emerging trends: Feeding bandwidth-hungry applications. Today s lowerspeed technologies may be adequate for simple messages. But tomorrow s applications will demand greater bandwidth. For example, consider a medical imaging scan containing over 8 billion bits of data. At 10 Mbps, transmission takes nearly 14 minutes. At 1.2 Gbps, this critical data flies across the network in just seven seconds! Powering your PCs into the millennium. You ve probably heard of Moore s Law the one that says computer processing power doubles every 18 months. Today s Pentium Pro-based PCs can process about 500 MIPS and more powerful machines are on the drawing boards! These new PCs may have the potential to load your network with as much as 500 Mbps, 1 Gbps, or even 100 Gbps of data. Handling increased network traffic. Computer speed is a factor in total world-wide information doubling every five years. With the explosion of company Intranets, networked PCs and switched LANs, the amount of traffic that flows over your network will also be increasing significantly.
3 GigaSPEED 100-Meter Guaranteed Channel Performance* Pair to Pair Power Sum Pair to Pair Power Sum Frequency Attenuation NEXT NEXT ELFEXT ELFEXT Return Loss Phase Delay Delay Skew ACR MHz db/100 meters db/100 meters (db) (db) (db) (db) (ns) (ns) db/100 meters * Note: Subject to SYSTIMAX Extended Product Warranty. All values apply to worst-case 100-meter channels with full cross-connects, cables, outlets, patchcords, and consolidation points. A Giant Step Forward in Channel Performance Building on Lucent s proven SYSTIMAX Power Sum solution, the GigaSPEED product family is designed for optimal channel performance end to end across the channel. The channel consists of the passive components that connect the LAN electronics to the PC. These products work together like a relay team executing a perfect hand-off. Each one excels at their part of the race and all weak links are eliminated to produce optimal performance. Simply put, optimal performance means consistent, reliable data transmission at speeds up to 1.2 Gbps! More specifically, performance can be defined by the following measurements: Attenuation measures the loss of signal power over distance. It increases with frequency so the higher the frequency, the greater the loss. Attenuation is measured in decibels (db), and a low number is desirable. (The lower the number, the stronger the signal.) SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED components are manufactured using a process that minimizes signal loss. End to end, a SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED solution can reduce attenuation by 10 percent compared to Category 5 standards. Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT) occurs when a signal from one cable pair leaks into another. NEXT is noise. Static during a phone call is merely annoying on a voice line, but it poses a serious threat to data transmission. Like Attenuation, NEXT is measured in decibels and degrades at higher frequencies. In this case, a higher number is desirable. Crosstalk can t be eliminated completely. But in a GigaSPEED solution, its effects are reduced by 77 percent compared to Category 5 standards! Equal Level far-end crosstalk (ELFEXT) is a measure of the unwanted signal coupling from a transmitter at the near-end into a neighboring pair measured at the far-end relative to the received signal level measured on the same pair. Power sum Equal level far-end crosstalk (PSELFEXT) is an accumulation of the unwanted signal coupling from multiple transmitters at the near-end into a pair measured at the far-end relative to the received signal level on that same pair. Return Loss (RL) measures energy reflected to the sending end of a channel because of channel component mismatches. A high number (measured in decibels) is desirable. GigaSPEED channel can dramatically improve return loss due to perfectly matched components. Phase Delay is the time needed for the transmission of a signal over a single pair of 100 Ohm 4-pair cabling from the near end to the far end of the channel. Delay Skew is the difference between the fastest and the slowest pairs within the same cable sheath. Attenuation to Crosstalk Ratio (ACR) the difference between Attenuation and NEXT is a simple way to determine available bandwidth. This measurement is also made in decibels. The greater the difference between the two, the more bandwidth is available. The GigaSPEED solution gives you 100 percent more useful bandwidth than CAT 5, facilitating higher speeds. Usable bandwidth is usually defined as the frequency at which the ACR is above 10dB. This occurs in a CAT 5 channel at 70MHz. In a GigaSPEED channel, on the other hand, ACR at 70MHz is an impressive 25dB. The ACR in GigaSPEED doesn t drop to 10dB until 149MHz. Balanced mode transmission minimizes emissions and optimizes noise immunity. It is expressed in Longitudinal Conversion Loss (LCL) with high db values being desirable. The excellent balance of the GigaSPEED channel yields stable performance at higher frequencies, lower emissions, and improved noise immunity.
4 A Completely Integrated Family of Products That Supports Existing and Emerging Technol Performance Degradation: A Serious Issue at Higher Speeds You ve installed CAT 5 components. So why doesn t your network perform consistently at CAT 5 standards? The reason is simple. Unless every component in your network is matched to each other, performance can degrade to CAT 4 or CAT 3 levels even with CAT 5 components. Backward and forward compatibility are key to better performance without the risk of adopting the wrong technology. The GigaSPEED solution is electrically and physically compatible with the CAT 5 system to insure the performance you expect. At gigabit speeds, performance degradation becomes a more serious issue. That s why a GigaSPEED solution from Lucent Technologies makes so much sense. Each component is engineered for optimal individual performance. But they re also designed to work well together and tested end to end. Designing network components that work together consistently is a lot like hitting the "sweet spot" on a golf club or tennis racquet repeatedly. If you could hit it every time, imagine how your game would improve! No matter what kinds of applications you re running or planning to run over your SYSTIMAX solution, you can count on a Lucent Technologies GigaSPEED solution for virtually flawless performance. In fact, our GigaSPEED products support a wide range of existing and emerging technologies from today s 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T, and 155 Mbps ATM to tomorrow s 1.0 Gbps Ethernet and 1.2 Gbps technologies.
