2 Course Description This is an advanced course reviewing state-of-the-art topics in well test interpretation and wireline formation testing. In the case of well testing the main issues which will be covered relate to fractured and layered reservoirs. It will be demonstrated that dual porosity behavior is never seen in carbonate reservoirs and the actual form of derivative diagnostics conform to different models of the system where linear and radial composite flow occur. In the case of layered reservoirs the importance of production logging is emphasised and the integration of petrophysical and core analysis data is emphasised. Finally the question of reserve estimation from well testing is covered in detail. In the case of wireline formation testing (WFT) the familiar problem of supercharging is revisited in the light of modern invasion models and a new form of correction is introduced. For the new generation WFT devices the mini-dst is considered in detail and its limitations are assessed particularly with regard to the prediction of well deliverability. Injection-falloff tests are a new topic which has particular importance in assessing the effect of stress on permeability and some results from CBM wells are discussed. Finally the application of new generation WFT devices in thin bed (low resistivity, low contrast) reservoirs is treated. About Your Course Instructor Professor George Stewart was a founding member of the Petroleum Engineering Department at Heriot-Watt in 1975 and was the second Head of Department in He also was a founder of EPS Ltd and was Chairman from In 1976 he was Visiting Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and from Senior Reservoir Engineer with Schlumberger where he specialised in Wireline Formation Testing. He has published many papers on well and formation testing and deliveres courses throughout the world. Currently he is Chief Reservoir Engineer for Weatherford Petroleum Consulting and Professor at Heriot-Watt. Recently he has authored two textbooks published by Pennwell: Well Test Design and Analysis and Wireline Formation Testing and Well Deliverability. CEUs Engineers are responsible for enhancing their professional competence throughout their careers. Licensed, chartered, and/or certified engineers are sometimes required by government entities to provide proof of continued professional development and training. Training credits are defined as Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Attendees of SPE training courses earn 0.8 CEUs for each day of training.
