APPLICATION NOTE: Version: 1.1 SETTING UP A GB-X3 LINK FOR 2 or 3 Gbps OPERATION This application note provides examples of how to configure a GB-X3 link for 2 or 3 Gbps operations. The following procedures assume the technician is familiar with the GB-X3 user interface. Please consult GB-X3 user documentation for details of setting up the user interface and configuring the radio. The high throughput operation can be configured using the radio s own protocol or using VLAN configurations. Each method will be described in the following sections. The Solectek GB-X3 radio includes a Gigabit switch with high capacity backplane that can transport up to 1Gbps per switch port. The switch interfaces with the wireless/fpga via ports 8, 9 and 10. Each one of these three ports handles 1Gbps and when they are aggregated, they can deliver a full 3Gbps. To prevent network loops conditions only port 8 is configured to for transport and the system is limited to a single 1Gbps wireless connection by default. The other two ports, 9 & 10 can each provide an additional 1Gbps to the FPGA and over the wireless link when configured. There are two ways to enable 3Gbps on the GB-X3 radio/link. One is to configure the Static, aggregation group to include ports; 8 & 9 & 10 for 3Gbps. The second option is to configure VLANs internally in order to route or more correctly, "direct" the traffic through and over the wireless link. LAN port 1 can be VLAN with wireless port 8, LAN port 2 can be VLAN with wireless port 9 and LAN port 3 can be VLAN with wireless port 10. This way, each LAN port has a full 1Gbps over the wireless dedicated to it. 1
ODU Configuration for 2/3 Gbps throughput 1) Ensure that the switch ports assigned to the wireless section of the radio are part of aggregation group 5. That is Ports 8 and 9 for 2Gbps operation and Ports 8, 9, and 10 for 3Gbps. Access the following screen, Switch -> Configuration -> Aggregation -> Static 2) Enable the wireless ports on the switch (for 2Gbps, enable ports 8 and 9. For 3Gbps, enable ports 8, 9, and 10). Access the following screen, Switch -> Configuration -> Ports 3) Configure the OTA (over the air) throughput to the maximum rate and channel bandwidth. Access the following screen, Radio Functions -> Setup 2
The setting for 3Gbps operation requires the Channel Bandwidth setting at 750MHz. Minimum rate shown is 83 Mbps and the maximum rate is 3000 Mbps. If adaptive modulation is not used for the link, you can set the minimum and maximum rates to be the same value. For 2 Gbps operation, the channel bandwidth must be at least 500MHz. For 3Gbps, it must be set to 750MHz. The radio will now operate with a maximum OTA of 3Gbps aggregate. The radio s aggregation protocol will ensure that data traffic is randomly distributed among all member ports of Group 5. 4) Verify traffic flow via the Port Statistics Overview page. Access the following screen, Switch -> Monitor -> Ports -> Traffic Overview 3
Radio Configuration for 2/3Gbps Throughput using VLAN For this example, a 3Gbps link will be used to provide access to three customers via the same wireless link, separated with VLAN. 1) Remove all member ports from the Aggregation Group #5 per the following Figure. Access Switch -> Configuration -> Aggregation -> Static 4
2) Create VLAN Memberships by adding the physical ports to the Memberships. In this example, The VLAN IDs are configured to match the port numbers that are members of the VLANs. However, any VLAN ID #s will work. VLAN 48 = Ports 4 & 8 VLAN 59 = Ports 5 & 9 VLAN 610 = Ports 6 & 10 Access Switch -> Configuration -> VLANs -> VLAN Membership This example shows all three VLANs were added at the same time. This is achieved by pressing the Add New VLAN button again after the VLAN ID and VLAN Name have been entered. After saving the configuration by pressing the Save button, the Delete button will be replaced by a box. Any VLAN(s) that need to be removed can be deleted by selecting this box next to the VLAN ID and pressing the Save button. 3) Configured VLAN ports with the correct VLAN IDs as shown in the following figure. Access Switch -> Configuration -> VLANs -> Ports 5
4) Disable TP on the participating ports as shown in the following figure Access Switch -> Configuration -> Spanning Tree -> CIST Ports 6
5) To verify the correct operation of the new configuration, push traffic only on one of the ports while reviewing the Port Statistic Overview page. Only the member ports for that VLAN will yield traffic. 7
