3 1. Getting Started First, check out all the cool features. Now, Turn it On AirCheck is Ready to Go in Under Three Seconds Starts Scanning Channels and Networks Immediately Bottom center of display shows channel being scanned and number of AP s detected Indicates Link to AP Restart All Tests Return to Prior Screen Supports a/b/g/n Lithium Ion Battery 5 + hours life Indicates AirCheck is Transmitting Optional Directional Antenna Connector (on back) USB Access for Upgrades and Reports Save Session Reports Return to Home Screen 3
4 2. Finding Networks and Access Points Make sure Networks is highlighted on the home screen and press SELECT You ll see a list of all the networks detected. (A network is a collection of AP s with the same name (SSID).) Use the left and right arrows to scroll the display for more information Press the Legend (F2) softkey for an explanation of symbols Security Signal Strength Number of AP s Network Type 4

Drill in on an AP Use the Arrow Keys to select a network Press SELECT to see a list of AP s on that network If the AP is not named, then its manufacturer s name and MAC address is displayed If you re looking at a small office or home network, there will probably be only one AP per network. Press SELECT again to see details of the selected AP 5
6 4. Locate an AP Press Locate (F2) for a real time graph of the AP s signal strength As you move closer to or further from the AP, you will see the signal strength change Note that measurements are expressed in negative dbm, which means that a signal of -30dBm is stronger than one of -40dBm 6
7 5. Discover Clients Associated to an AP Press the Back key to go back to AP details You can discover client devices (typically PCs or smartphones) that are associated with the selected AP. Select Clients to view associated clients Press SELECT again to see details of the selected client 7

Locate a Client Press Locate (F2) for a real time graph of the client s signal strength As you move closer to or further from the client, you will see the signal strength change Note that measurements are expressed in negative dbm, which means that a signal of -30dBm is stronger than one of -40dBm 8

Discover All Client Devices You can also discover all the clients devices that are in an area instead of just associated to an AP Return to the main screen by pressing the Home key Select Clients to see a list of probing and associated clients in the area A client is associated if an SSID is listed for the client and probing if an SSID is not listed Press SELECT again to see details of the selected client Press Locate to locate these clients just like the ones associated to an AP Associated client Probing client 9
10 8. Setting an AP s Authorization Status (ACL) The Access Control List (ACL) lets you tag AP s so that you can quickly identify ones that that should not be there. You may have to scroll left to see the ACL indication on the AP screen Press the Home key to return to the main screen Use the arrow keys to highlight Access Points and press SELECT Scroll to the desired AP and then press ACL (F2) Choose the proper authorization status for that AP and then press SELECT 10

Channel Usage and Interference AirCheck can scan all Wi-Fi channels for AP s, traffic, and interference Press the Home key, then select Channels and press SELECT Press Legend (F2) for an explanation of this screen Interference shows up as gray bars You can generate interference with a microwave oven (be sure to put something such as a cup of water in it before starting it) or a Bluetooth device it will show up on the display A Bluetooth device needs to be in search/discover mode to generate significant interference. Press AP List (F1) for a list of AP s on a selected channel Not much interference Significant interference 11
12 10. Connecting to a Network You can connect to an open network or a secured network. If your network security requires a certificate then you will need to use AirCheck Manager software to include the certificate in your profile You can connect to a network or a specific AP from a number of different screens by pressing Connect (F1). For this example, press the Home key, select Networks then select the desired network and press Connect (F1) AirCheck s connection test includes three parts, as noted on the screen: Establish connection with AP Obtain IP address with DHCP Ping Gateway and DHCP Server 12

Configure AirCheck for a Secured Network If your network is secured, you will need to configure AirCheck to connect to the secured network If you do not already see this screen, select a secured network and press SELECT. Press Ok to configure the network Select your desired Authentication type and press Next (F1) Select your desired Encryption type and press Next (F1) Select your desired EAP type and press Next (F1) 13

Configure AirCheck for a Secured Network If your chosen security requires a username and password you will need to enter them now Select Set username and press SELECT Enter your username using the keyboard. Press Save (F2) when done Enter and save your password Press Done (F2) when complete AirCheck will connect to the access point using the configured security 14

Testing Signal Quality When connected to a network, you can run a continuous signal quality test by pressing Start Tests (F1) From here you can choose to PING the gateway, DHCP server or enter another address. Choose the gateway and press SELECT AirCheck will ping continuously and display the connection quality in a realtime graph. Move around your area and see how the connection quality is affected. 15
16 13. AutoTest AutoTest gives you instant visibility into the health of your wireless environment Results include an overall rating of Pass, Warning or Fail AutoTest consists of 3 tests: Air Quality Network Quality Rogues Press the Home key, choose AutoTest and press SELECT 16

AutoTest Air Quality Air Quality shows results for all APs in the environment APs that you own and control APs that your neighbors own Rogue APs Highlight Air Quality and press SELECT to drill into results Air Quality shows results for channel utilization Non channel utilization or interference Co-channel interference 17

AutoTest Network Quality Network Quality allows you to look at the networks that you own This network list is controlled via your AirCheck profile Press the back key to go the top level AutoTest Results Highlight Network Quality and press SELECT to drill in Network Quality shows results for each SSID: Coverage Co-channel interference Security Connection details 18
19 13. AutoTest Network Quality In this example, our profile has defined two SSIDs: AuthorizedGuest Danaher TM Select an SSID and drill into to see its results: Coverage Co-Channel Interference Security Connection In this example, AuthorizedGuest has passed all tests 19

AutoTest Rogue AP Identification AutoTest can instantly show you any unauthorized or rogue APs in your environment Press the Back key to go the top level AutoTest Results Highlight Rogues Access Points and press SELECT to drill in Rogue APS are identified in two ways: They are not define in your current profile s ACL list is a rogue AP which IS NOT using an SSID configured in the profile is a rogue AP which IS using an SSID configured in the profile 20
21 13. AutoTest Rogue AP Identification Highlight the Rogue in question and press SELECT to drill into it s details. Press Locate (F2) to quickly locate the rogue AP. 21
22 14. Using AirCheck Manager Software The AirCheck Manager software is required for two main functions 1. Loading security and encryption profile information into AirCheck 2. Creating Session Reports from information that AirCheck has collected The first step is to install the ACM software on your computer. Follow the directions included on the ACM software CD. You will also need a USB cable to connect AirCheck to your PC 22

Implementing Security Profiles AirCheck Supports All Common Wi-Fi Security Standards AirCheck Stores Network Security Information in Profiles that Can be Loaded and Modified with ACM There are three steps to Enabling a Profile in AirCheck 1. Create the Profile with the Security Information 2. Transfer the Profile to AirCheck 3. Load the Profile in AirCheck Start the ACM Program Connect AirCheck to your PC with the USB cable 23
24 15. Implementing Security Profiles Creating a Profile in ACM Click on the Profile Setup tab on the right hand side of the display In the Profile Manager window, select New 24

Implementing Security Profiles Creating a Profile in ACM (cont) Click ADD to add a new SSID Use the tabs to enter the following: IP Configuration Automatic is the correct choice 95% of the time all else can be left blank Security This needs to match your AP configuration Click on File, then Save As to name and save your profile. 25
26 15. Implementing Security Profiles Transfer the Profile to AirCheck Make sure your new Profile is Highlighted Click on the Transfer to AirCheck button The new Profile will show up in AirCheck Profiles 26

Implementing Security Profiles Load the Profile in AirCheck From the Home Menu, Select Tools, then Manage profiles / network passwords Select Load Profile Scroll down to the desired Profile and then press Load The currently active profile is displayed in the upper right corner of the main menu screen When you are done evaluating AirCheck, you can remove your Profile by using Tools Manage profiles / network passwords Delete File 27
28 16. Save an AirCheck Session Press the Save button Select Save to save AirCheck s current session data Connect AirCheck to your PC with the USB cable Start AirCheck Manager software Notice that ACM now shows your saved session 28
29 17. Generate a Session Report Press the Report icon to open the Report Generator Select the type of report you want: Summary or Detailed Press the Generate button to create your report 29
30 18. Create a Screen Capture Document AirCheck s current screen for evidentiary purposes via screen captures. Record any screen shot such as: Networks and its security details Client device details Quickly capture any AirCheck screen with a two button sequence Hold down and at the same time AirCheck will produce a tone for ~10 seconds and generate a bitmap file of the current screen The bitmap is stored on AirCheck s root directory 30
