IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets IPTV Distribution Technologies in Broadband Home Nets The IPTV net Emad Shihab and Lin Cai Wireless and Neting (WAN) Research Group University of Victoria
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets Outline The IPTV net The IPTV net Motivation of this
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets IPTV and VoD The IPTV net IPTV: Is television over IP nets. IPTV should ideally offer complete broadcast channels (just like our existing cable TV) Two way capability in IP nets allows IPTV interactions among service providers and subscribers. Video on Demand (VoD) enables a user to join and start any program at their convenience (somewhat similar to Pay per View) Unicast stream of programming with controls like play, pause and rewind
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The Video Headend and Core Net The IPTV net The Video Headend The video head end is the point in the net where the programming content is captured, encoded and broken into IP packets The Core net The grouping of encoded video streams, representing the channel line up, is transported over the service provider s IP net
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The Access net The IPTV net The link from the service provider to the individual household. It consists of three main components: The Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) authentication, billing, etc.. The Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) The subscriber s home through Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The home net The IPTV net The net inside the home. Ideally it is setup by the user Used to distribute the signal to all net devices inside the home To successfully distribute these signals, we can use: Ethernet Power line Phone line Coax UWB IEEE x Millimetre Wave (MMW) GHz How we use these distribution depends on the home net architecture
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The IPTV net Maximum data rate: The maximum raw data rate that the respective technology can theoretically achieve is considered. Cost: Because we focus on the home net, cost here refers to the cost that the end user will face in order to make use of the technology. We assume that the cost to rewire a home is prohibitively high. We also consider the cost of purchasing additional equipment such as adaptors, access points (APs), etc. Interference: For broadcast wireless and wired, interference not only affects the channel quality, but also limits the net capacity. In-home availability (wired): In-home availability considers how many outlets are available on average in a typical home. Transmission distance (wireless): This determines the distance that a wireless device can provide coverage for.
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The IPTV net Ethernet Main advantages: Data rates up to 1 Gigabit, reliable connections, employs efficient CSMA/CD MAC Main disadvantage: Required rewiring existing homes (too costly) Powerline Main advantages: Data rates up to 200 Mbps, doesn t require rewiring the existing home (the most widely available outlets in the home) Main disadvantage: Very noisy channel condition, cost of powerline adaptor is considerably high
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets cont d The IPTV net Phone line Main advantages: Data rates up to 240 Mbps, no rewiring of the existing home required, the latest standard (HomePNA 3.0) supports QoS for multimedia applications Main disadvantage: Most phone line outlets are not located in positions where they can reach TV sets Coaxial Main advantages: Data rates in excess of 200 mbps, no rewiring of the existing home required, provides QoS support Main disadvantage: Coax outlets are not as widely available as phone line or powerline outlets
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The IPTV net Ultrawide band Main advantages: Data rates in excess of 480 Mbps, provides QoS support, low interference to existing narrowband Main disadvantage: Limited transmission range IEEE n Main advantages: Data rates in excess of 500 Mbps, provides QoS support, large transmission range (can provide coverage indoors and outdoors) Main disadvantage: May require new hardware, large transmission range, interference with current narrowband
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The IPTV net millimeter Wave (MMW) GHz Main advantages: Data rates in excess of 2 Gbps, provides QoS support, low interference Main disadvantage: High oxygen absorption, requires LOS paths
Motivation IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The IPTV net Motivation for for this this Our main goal is to propose efficient home net architectures Before we can propose these architectures, we need to research the latest distribution available for us to use Post understanding the characteristics of these distribution, we are in a better position to design efficient home net architectures The next step from there is to evaluate our home net architectures, and further improve our design
Conclusion IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets The IPTV net future We have surveyed the leading wired and wireless broadband distribution We evaluated the effectiveness of the respective according to specific criteria In the future, we plan to propose and evaluate efficient home net architectures that make use of these distribution
IPTV Distribution Technologies is Broadband Home Nets Thank you! The IPTV net Questions...?
