2 Whitepaper 2 Overview Mojo s Cognitive WiFi solution, Aware, uniquely harnesses the power of the cloud, big data analytics, and self-awareness to automate WiFi troubleshooting and deliver the best user experience possible to both WiFi users and network administrators. Mojo Aware is a cognitive plane application that marries Mojo s high performance, intelligent WiFi access points (APs) distributed at the edge with its massively scalable cloud platform. Aware transforms ~300 continuously monitoring Key Indicators (KPIs) and Mojo s deep domain expertise into essential, actionable insights for the network support team and establishes a basis for a self-healing WLAN using machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cognitive computing. Following are some of the key features of Mojo Aware. Ease of Use Mojo Aware s unique design was built from the ground up by UX experts to provide a pristine user experience. It presents the most important information prominently and uses intuitive workflows to navigate to other resources. The client-first approach provides direct insight into WiFi users network connectivity and performance experience. Client connection assessments are available via the cloud within seconds and are maintained historically for investigation at a later time. The connection dashboard summarizes and highlights problems that may hamper the WiFi user experience and require attention. It also builds a baseline of key metrics for each network and highlights anomalies that vary significantly from the baseline. Deeper insights can be found by a simple mouse-hover or to click and drill down on specific WiFi clients, APs, applications, or charts. Often the first step in troubleshooting a user-reported WiFi issue is finding the user in the tool. Mojo Aware minimizes the pain of finding a troubled client by providing global, dynamic search for clients on the network. The main search bar is readily accessible at the top of the dashboard and it dynamically searches for clients based on their MAC or IP address, by user (802.1x) or device name. The search refines as info is entered, character by character. Troubleshooting Connections and WiFi issues can be divided into two general categories: Connection problems - difficulty gaining access to the WLAN Poor performance - trouble with application after a successful connection
3 Whitepaper 3 Mojo Aware focuses on each type of problem by providing two dashboards: and. Failures Mojo embeds our deep domain expertise in each Mojo AP which monitors each client as it attempts to connect to the WiFi network. If a connection problem occurs, the AP detects it, determines the root cause of the problem, captures a sniffer trace of the problem, and delivers the root cause and the sniffer trace to Aware in Mojo cloud. Aware displays the root cause graphically and in easy to understand language. If further investigation is needed, the sniffer trace can be automatically opened in Mojo Packets for graphical analysis, or downloaded for analysis in packet analyzers like Wireshark. All of this is done within seconds of the connection problem occurring. Client Journey - Location The Client Journey provides a realtime overview of the network s client connection problems. It is separated by the phases each client must go through when connecting to the WLAN: Association, Authentication, and Network (DHCP and DNS). Each phase reports the clients that have successfully passed and failed to complete that phase. Hovering over failure number lists the failures by root cause and the number for each. Clicking on the error number drills down to provide more details and the failed clients. search function which is used to view details of a specific client connection. Search for and select a client via the search bar on the Client Journey s graph to shows the details of its last connection attempt. The view shows the connection details (success/failure, latency, etc.) and allows you to drill down into the client s connection logs for the last month. Once clients are connected, the user experience and application performance largely depends on the quality of a client s connection. Mojo Aware provides direct insight into client health and reports clients experiencing WiFi issues (e.g., low RSSI or poor coverage, low data rate, high retry rate and stick clients) that may cause poor application performance and user experience. The latencies for common network services (DHCP and DNS) and TCP-based applications are also shown. Client Journey - Individual Client The Client Journey section has its own
4 Whitepaper 4 Mojo Aware also provides baselines to characterize normal network behavior and highlights anomalies or significant deviations from those baselines. Aware Baselines and Anomalies Traditional network monitoring systems use thresholds to evaluate key health and performance metric. These thresholds are manually set and must be tuned because each network has different characteristics. Network managers typically disable threshold based warning messages based because they produce a significant number of false negatives and false positives. Aware takes a different approach. It creates baselines (connectivity and performance) to show what normal behavior is for each network. Baselines are dynamic and adjust as the network characteristics change. Each baseline graph contains three componen ts that make normal and unusual behavior easy to see: Baseline - weighted average of data that shows normal behavior Aware contains the following baseline graphs: Type Baseline Clients Affected by Failures Latency DHCP Latency DNS Latency AAA Data Rate Retry Rate % Client Affected by Poor Deviation range - normal range of data Anomalies - data point significantly away from the baseline Latency Application The blue line represents the baseline and the dots are data points used to determine the baseline. The light blue band is the standard deviation of the data points and adjusts with the baseline as data points are added. Application Latency End-to-end application performance depends on both WiFi and wired networks over which packets traverse. Users often blame WiFi for performance problems when there could be a problem on with wired side of the network. The red dots are anomalies, or data points that differs significantly from the baseline. These events are well outside of what is normal and should be investigated. Using deep packet inspection (DPI), Mojo parses all TCP connections for the network and separates them into wired and wireless components. The Application Latency baseline graph displays the wired and wireless components of TCP latency. Comparing these baselines allows you to narrow down the troubleshooting focus to the wired or wireless part of the network.
5 Whitepaper 5 Troubleshooting Mojo Aware takes the pain out of WiFi troubleshooting by largely automating the detection and root cause analysis of failures and anomalies, even in situations when the problem is not with WiFi, but elsewhere on the network. However, at times, a deeper look or further analysis may be necessary. Traditionally, advanced WiFi troubleshooting has been a painstaking process, often requiring personnel to travel to the site, set up test gear, attempt to reproduce the problem and collect relevant information if everything goes as planned. Mojo Aware also simplifies advanced WiFi troubleshooting with its Auto Packet Capture and Client Emulation features. Auto Packet Capture Network troubleshooters often rely on capturing packet traces for advanced WiFi problem solving. Most of the time a packet capture tool is not running when a problem occurs so the administrator must coordinate with the user(s) that experienced the problem and seek their help to reproduce so that it can be captured in a packet trace. Special tools for WiFi packet capture and analysis, and presence of onsite WiFi experts is often needed. Mojo Aware provides a smarter, automated way of capturing packet traces when it matters. Each Mojo AP captures packets for each client as it connects to the network. When a problem occurs, the AP detects the problem, perform root cause analysis, save the captured packets, and report all that information to the cloud. Reviewing the trace is easy. It can be downloaded locally for review with your favorite sniffer tool or it can be seamlessly uploaded to Mojo Packets for graphical analysis without. 3rd Radio Client Testing Mojo Aware uses the APs 3rd radio (C-110 and C-130 s) validate client connectivity issues on neighboring APs. When the third radio of Mojo s tri-radio APs runs as a client, administrators can test WiFi connectivity and network performance tests. Tests are run from Mojo Aware ondemand or can be scheduled to be run automatically can be repeated. A test is run by selecting the AP it is to be run against, a test profile to run, which neighboring, tri-radio AP to use as the client. A test profile requires the basic information of SSID, frequency band, and a site to ping. Optional tests that can be added to the test profile include: additional servers to ping, VoIP, and common business applications. The client emulation testing evaluates connectivity and latency of: Association Authentication (PSK or 802.1x) DHCP Gateway DNS WAN Latency - to Ping to selected servers VoIP MOS test All necessary information is captured in real-time, as the problem occurs and available at your fingertips in the Mojo Aware UI in the context of the specific WiFi client that experienced the problem. No need to travel to the site with special tools to try to reproduce the problem and capture a packet trace.
6 Whitepaper 6 Scheduling Client testing from an APs third radio can be set up to run on a schedule to verify network daily or before a regular event. Client Logging Mojo Aware offers a number of ways to view what is going on with a client. From the high level connection successes and failures, to details of the events that happen during the connection, and to the lowest level of debugging. All logs are easily accessible from the intuitive portal regardless of where the client or the troubleshooter is located. Client Connection Logs At a high level, aware maintains a timeline of connection successes and failures for each client. Client Event Logs Details of connection events are obtained quickly from the client view. Live Client Debugging One of the most valuable tools in troubleshooting is getting details about what a client is doing as it moves around the WLAN. Aware makes it as easy as a right click on a client to start collecting debug logs in real-time a while the client is live on the network.
