1 How to setup AutoWDS What is WDS? Wireless Distribution System, WDS provides a way to link APs together when wired cabling is not preferable or not available. This also extends the wireless coverage of the wireless network for the wireless clients. AutoWDS of PolePoint will eliminate all detailed node settings and PolePoint will automatically search for nodes for connection. In OfficePoint, this is the similar feature named as AutoMesh. To setup an AutoWDS/AutoMesh network, it is required to have at least one device which can establish Internet connection Pepwave

2 1. Configuration via Web Admin Interface The Wire-Connected Device which Provide Internet Access After you have plugged an Ethernet cable and configured Internet connection, navigate to Configure > WDS for AutoWDS settings, or Configure > AutoMesh for AutoMesh settings. AutoWDS in PolePoint AutoMesh in OfficePoint Choose Auto for WDS Mode. By default, OfficePoint can only do Auto whereas PolePoint can do Manual WDS. Select Wired for Node Type. Create a passphrase which should be 16-digits in length for wireless node devices to identify the Internet connection source device wire-connected PolePoint/OfficePoint. Click Save to flash and activate for activating changes Pepwave

3 The Wireless Node Devices To configure each wireless node behind the wire-connected device, navigate to Configure > WDS in PolePoint, or Configure > AutoMesh in OfficePoint. AutoWDS in PolePoint AutoMesh in OfficePoint Choose Auto for WDS Mode. By default, OfficePoint can only do Auto whereas PolePoint can do Manual WDS. Select Wireless for Node Type. Enter the 16-digits passphrase which has been created in the configuration of Wire-connected device. Click Save to flash and activate for activating changes. By now AutoWDS/AutoMesh is set and Internet coverage should be extended by wireless node devices Pepwave

4 2. Configuration via InControl Users can use InControl to push AutoWDS settings into each device as well. To do so, users need to configure wireless node devices with a wired Ethernet WAN first so that InControl settings can be detected through Internet connection. 1. Go to InControl at for AutoWDS configuration. If you do not have an InControl account, please refer to the following FAQs for details: 2. After you have logged-in, go to Configuration > [PolePoint Configuration Profile] > Wireless Networks and check the box next to WDS to enable WDS feature. 3. Choose Auto for Auto WDS, Auto Detect for Node Type and enter a 16 digits passphrase for devices to identify each other. Click Save to save settings. 4. Go to Device > Managed Products > Pepwave PolePoint. Checked the boxes to select PolePoint devices which will be used in the WDS network. 5. In the Actions drop-down menu, choose Configuration. 6. A pop-up screen Batch Change Configuration appears. Choose the configuration profile which you have defined before for AutoWDS settings. Click OK to confirm settings Pepwave

5 7. Configuration is now assigned to PolePoint devices which have been selected in step 5. Changes will take effect in 10 minutes. 8. After 10 minutes, you can now physically plug your wired Ethernet WAN connection to each of PolePoint devices. Once the devices can reach the InControl service, settings will be automatically pushed into the device. Wait few minutes for each device to complete configuration and activation. 9. After the configuration, you can set up your APs to the predetermined locations. If you are configuring an AutoMesh network of OfficePoint, the steps for setup would be similar. The only difference is the Configuration section in InControl would be at Configuration > [OfficePoint Configuration Profile] > AutoMesh. Check the box next to AutoMesh Settings. Select Auto Detect as Node Type and create a 16-digits AutoMesh Member Key as the passphrase for each device to identify each other. Special Notes Configuration of OfficePoint AutoMesh Note A: AutoMesh in OfficePoint is compatible with AutoWDS in PolePoint. Users can use either PolePoint or OfficePoint as wire-connected device or wireless node devices. Note B: SSID of each wireless node device can be set separately and identically. They do not need to be the same as the SSID of wire-connected device. Note C: Performance of wireless connection depends on the node level. When the hop (retransmission) number increase, the performance will be affected and decreased accordingly. i.e. Transmission speed of level 1 is faster than level 3, as level 3 means there are 3 hops in between Pepwave

6 Note D: It is recommended that all wireless node devices set its Server IP as DHCP (or IP Address as Automatic in OfficePoint), so that administrator can login through wireless connection for management purpose. Change the Server IP to be DHCP in PolePoint (or IP Address to be Automatic in OfficePoint), and uncheck the box Keep Default IP ( ). Wireless node devices will then obtain an IP address from the wire-connected device.
