Dr. Mazlan Abbas MIMOS Berhad Implementing Ubiquitous Network with IPv6
Agenda of Presentation Introduction to Ubiquitous Network IPv6 as the Core of All IP Network The Making of Ubiquitous Networks by MIMOS Summary
Ubiquitous Network Definition Ubiquitous came from Latin which means exist everywhere. The word is popular in IT industry after Mark Weiser from Xerox Inc., Palo Alto, California propose the concept of ubiquitous computing in 1988 ICT Convergence that can be accessed by anybody, anywhere, anytime, and by any device
Trends Computing devices Small form factor devices PDAs, Smart Phones, Web Pads Always On, Always connected Enable new and interesting usage scenarios
Trends - Applications Peer-to-peer enables compelling scenarios Require end-to-end connectivity Blocked by Network Address Translators (NATs) Net attached Consumer Electronics and Gaming appliances emerging Applications assuming always-on connectivity, anywhere Voice, Video, Collaboration
17Billion Network-able Devices Sun Microsystems estimates that including sensor and RFID networks the world could have a trillion communicating devices in a decade!
IPv6: Enabling Affordable, Ubiquitous Connectivity Video, music, online games, Monitoring homes Home remotely appliance/ network Remote education, tele-health Video streaming/ multicasting e-government Disaster monitoring for floods, volcano, Remote application of passports Sensor Energy management network/ by building automation traceability IP telephony Transportation Track & monitor produce from farms to stores IP telephony intra & inter company Search available parking Efficient manageme of taxis, buses, Realization of end-to-end, secure, and seamless connectivity
IPv6 Value Proposition Engineered to Perform and Protect IPv4 Uses a 32-bit address 2 32 = 4,294,967,296 possible addresses Running out of internet addresses Security was an add-on Network & system management is complex and slow Incredibly successful 20 + years old IPv6 Uses 128-bit addressing = 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374, 607,431,768,211,456 possible addresses Enough address space to give every human on the planet a unique IP address Mandatory and effective IP security Less Infrastructure Maintenance and complexity required More efficient Mobile IP = seamless service availability Architecture of the future = Next Generation internet protocol

Network Mobility (NEMO) The mobility of a network, instead of a node E.g., passengers with their laptops in a LRT They can access the Internet individually through expensive technologies (e.g., 3G) A better alternative will be: The train has a mobile router built-in, which accesses the Internet wirelessly The passengers, however, are only required to use (or even Ethernet) to connect to the mobile router, and the mobile router takes care of everything else! The passengers laptops and the mobile router form a network and move together, but the passengers are totally transparent to mobility! Not Me!!
