Fraunhofer in Germany and Worldwide At present Fraunhofer Germany maintains 60 Fraunhofer institutes with a staff of scientists & engineers 1.7 billion annual budget Worldwide 2009: Fraunhofer Portugal, Austria 2009: Fraunhofer is founding member of the ecaesar Association in Romania Fraunhofer USA, Inc. maintains 7 centers next to the headquarters in Plymouth, MI In Asia, Fraunhofer offices are located in China, Indonesia, Korea and Japan
Access to modern communication systems is essential today needed: Access Internet Access benefits life Access to the internet has significant potential to improve life and the development allowing, a multitude of new services and improvements Economical impact e.g.: Direct correlation of Broadband and GDP growth: +10% Access -> ~+ 1%GDP 1 Unconnected regions at disadvantage Problematic is as some areas that benefit from access, others that do not are falling even further behind Companies and people are forced to leave A Digital Divide forms a.o. between regions and people in Urban and Rural / Developed and Developing areas + Broadband access, can improve Knowledge Health Education Economical situation Commerce Freedom Environment Security - Lack of connectivity means No access to advantages Increasing gap to connected regions Disadvantages in life and economy lead to Migration, Desertion 1 McKinsey (2011), OECD (2012), BMWi (2012)
Connecting Rural Areas is more costly and faces specific challenges needed: Access costs Rural Attributes Revenue per User Urban The challenge to rural connectivity FTTX FTTX LTE Low Population Density Lack of Energy Access Harsh Environment Sub-Urban LTE OPEX / CAPEX Traditional Operator Technologies FTTX, UMTS, LTE Rural Huge Distances Lack of skilled labor High OPEX/CAPEX Profitability Gap Typical attributes of rural regions lead to CAPEX and OPEX per connection that exceeds potential income Cost for FTTH connection per User highest vs. lowest density areas of Germany: 1500 EUR / 4500 EUR 1 Lack of sufficient profitability prevents operators to invest in rural areas Billions of people in developing countries and still between 5 8% unconnected in industrialized countries Operators are left without viable business case or users with inequal prices Gap needs to be closed alternatively Alternative Business Models Public Funding Support Optimized Technical Solutions

WiBACK provides a solution WiBACK Fraunhofer WiBACK Developed by the Fraunhofer FOKUS Institute of Germany Deployments in Europe, Africa and South America Carrier Grade Backhaul-Network, Guaranteed QoS Constructs a self managing wireless backhaul network that extends via Ethernet, WLAN or 2G/3G/4G into homes and to users devices Bandwidth: 100 / 200 Mbps 1 Reach: 20 / 100km (p.c./total) Latency: <2ms p.c. Point to Point Wireless Backhaul Self Managing System Efficiency, Flexibility, Reliability 1 Typical Setup today / coming 2014
WiBACK provides a solution WiBACK Performance 100Mbps, 10km, <2ms latency per connection max (5GHz Spectr.) Typical setup (price / value) Possible to utilize different hardware / spectrum for optimized values Network Management Self managing: WiBACK is Plug & Play! Network easy and quick to set up and maintain. No need for skilled labor Self healing: in case a node is not accessible anymore Reliable (automatic frequency optimization, mesh network) Data Management (QoS) Provides wire-like Ethernet connectivity between Backbone and Access Differentiation of traffic (Type, prioritization, bandwidth guarantee) MPLS-based Traffic Engineering, Resource-aware Routing, Resource Isolation, Extensive monitoring of resources i i i i Figures dependent on technology in use, which is generally independent from WiBACK. Recent deployments use 5Ghz spectrum reaching the mentioned values. The management functionalities are the heart of WiBACK. It includes automatic network and service management, which distinguishes it from other P2P solutions WiBACK identifies all peers it can reach and integrates them into the network in an optimal manner. New / replacement nodes are as quickly integrated the same way -> minimal effort, no skilled labor Interferences can affect connections negatively. WiBACK checks spectrum constantly and selects best channels Recognizing data types allows voice to be prioritized, calls uninterrupted
WiBACK provides a solution WiBACK Cost Efficiency Use of standard hardware and can use licence free spectrum as well as licenced Low maintenance network: reliable, self managing, easy exchange of hardware No need for skilled labor Flexibility Solar powered Nodes can be solar powered and therefore placed in regions without access to energy Reusable / Restructurable: Nodes can easily be replaced and integrated into the network at another position Technology independent: Can use different technologies and frequencies within one network (TVWS, WLAN, Fiber) Green Low power consumption Low radiation i i i Being widely automatically managed a main cost and availability problem of skilled labor on site is removed. The network sets up itself. If a node needs to be replaced it is an easy exchange of hardware. WiBACK does the rest! If a connected region / peer is connected via fiber, the radio connection therefore not needed anymore, it is easy to take the node away and use it at any other place to support still insufficiently connected areas Using 5GHz spectrum a WiBACK node only uses 0,1 W for transmission. An LTE base station can require up to 300W
WiBACK provides a solution WiBACK System WiBACK - Controller One Controller needed per Network WiBACK Repeater Node Interfaces: 2 x RJ45 10/100Tx Ethernet (Access), Serial RS232, 2 x Wireless LAN High power backhaul interfaces System: Architecture Embedded Linux, x86, Multi node support Clustering of multiple nodes via Ethernet WLAN backhaul radios: Type Atheros chipset, IEEE802.11a/g/n Node Mounting Option a) Building available to mount Nodes to / on -> Simple Mounting Kit: Option b) Tower is needed to allow a line of sight connection Bulid / rent space on existing towers 1 McKinsey (2011), OECD (2012), BMWi (2012)
