Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution Introduction World Wide Packets LightningEdge Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) solution presents service providers with a way to selectively increase the utilization of existing fiber assets to quickly deploy additional bandwidth and services at a fraction of the investment required to deploy new fiber. 10x Bandwidth Increase World Wide Packets CWDM solution enables service providers to increase the useable bandwidth of existing fiber infrastructure by a factor of ten. All of the CWDM solution components fully conform to the ITU-T G standard, which specifies eighteen optical wavelengths spaced 20 nm apart from 1270 nm to 1610 nm. Current CWDM implementations only make use of the upper eight lambdas from 1470 nm to 1610 nm. The water peak at 1383 nm renders 1370 nm through 1410 nm unusable due to ITU-T G CWDM Spectrum Optical Bands O E S C L Water Peak potential absorption of hydroxyl ions by the fiber, and the O- Band is typically already in service, however the 1430 nm and 1450 nm lambdas are very viable. In addition to the eight lambdas from 1470 nm to 1610 db/km nm 1290nm 1310nm 1330nm 1350nm 1370nm 1390nm 1410nm 1430nm 1450nm 1470nm 1490nm 1510nm 1530nm 1550nm 1570nm 1590nm 1610nm nm, World Wide Packets CWDM solution enables the use of the 1430 nm and 1450 nm lambdas, resulting in ten useable lambdas a 10x increase in bandwidth as compared to existing fiber, and a 25% increase in bandwidth as compared to current CWDM implementations. 2 Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution LightningEdge CWDM Solution World Wide Packets LightningEdge CWDM solution includes Small Form- Factor Pluggable (SFP) CWDM optical transceivers, passive and Optical Add/Drop Muxes () components. CWDM SFP Optical Transceivers World Wide Packets LightningEdge Ethernet service delivery access network platforms employ industry standard Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers. LightningEdge platforms support any available SFP optical transceiver including 100 Mb/s, 1 Gb/s, multimode, single mode, and CWDM varieties. The ability to use SFP CWDM optics integrated directly into the LightningEdge platform provides several advantages over external CWDM solutions: Integrated service and link management Reduced rack space requirements Reduced cabling Reduced power requirements Increased reliability Costs matched to subscriber take rates Passive CWDM Components The passive components of existing CWDM implementations focus only on the simplex nature of the fiber plant, which adds significant cabling and configuration complexity wherever passive components are deployed with active switching platforms. World Wide Packets CWDM solution includes passive components specifically designed to support the duplex nature of Ethernet for deployments with active switching platforms, and simplex components for locations where Outside Plant (OSP) technicians will be responsible for the passives. LightningEdge CWDM passive components are transparent to the line rate and support any mix of 100 Mb/s or 1 Gb/s line rates as determined by the specific SFP optical transceivers used. 2 Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution October 2004

Passive The passive is a key component of the LightningEdge CWDM solution and is available in a λ OSP splice case-ready version, and industry standard 4λ λ and LGX form factor modules for deployments in existing LGX bays. The LGX module versions include the mux and demux functionality on the same module providing a duplex interface that simplifies cabling to the LightningEdge platforms. The LGX module versions also include an integrated expansion channel to address adding CWDM capabilities to fiber that is already in service with 1310 nm links. λ OSP : 1430 nm 1610 nm Insertion Loss < 3.0 db Mux and Demux packaging: 3.2 W x 4.4 L x 0.4 H 250µ 1m pigtails, 900µ buffer λ LGX : 1430 nm 1610 nm Insertion Loss < 3.5 db Expansion Channel Insertion Loss < 1.3 db Packaging: 2-slot LGX module LC/APC connectors 4λ λ LGX 4λ : 1550 nm 1610 nm Insertion Loss < 2.4 db Expansion Channel Insertion Loss <1.3 db Packaging: 1-slot LGX module LC/APC connectors Passive Optical Add/Drop Mux () World Wide Packets simplifies the insertion and removal of lambdas of interest with three passive s: 3-port OSP : 1430 nm 1610 nm Add/Drop 3-port OSP Wideband : 1310 nm Add/Drop 4-port LGX : 1430 nm 1610 nm Add/Drop October 2004 Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution 3

Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution The 3-port OSP s are packaged for OSP splice trays and facilitate a single lambda add/drop for star architectures. The 3-port OSP Wideband is for 1310 nm add/drop in star architectures. This filter may be used to complement the expansion port in the CWDM at the other end of the link. The 4-port LGX is packaged in the LGX form-factor and facilitates single lambda add/drop for ring architectures with Ultra-Blocking filters to insure no aliasing of the CWDM frequencies into the 1300 nm spectrum. 3-port OSP Add/Drop Insertion Loss < 0.8 db Through Channel Insertion Loss < 0.6 db Packaging: simplex, 5mm x 55mm body, with 250µ 1m pigtails, 900µ buffer 4-port LGX Add/Drop Insertion Loss < 0.8 db Through Channel Insertion Loss < 0.9 db Packaging: 1 slot LGX module LC/APC connectors Flexible Network Architectures The LightningEdge CWDM solution supports trunk, star and ring topologies over dark fiber or lit fiber that is already in service with 1310 nm links. The following architecture examples demonstrate the Layer 1 and Layer 2 connectivity and make no assumptions about the applications the network is providing. The LightningEdge CWDM passive components are transparent to link speed and support any combination of 100 Mb/s and 1 Gb/s links. Link speeds shown in the following diagrams were selected for purposes of clarity. 4 Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution October 2004

CWDM Trunk Architecture The LightningEdge CWDM solution can be deployed between facilities to provide a ten-fold increase in bandwidth without deploying new fiber. The figures below show how two CWDM λ modules could be used. 10 Gb/s CWDM Trunk 5 Gb/s RSTP Folded Ring CWDM Trunk CWDM Star Architecture The LightningEdge CWDM solution can be used in a star architecture to drop fiber to multiple physical locations for access while leveraging the existing metropolitan fiber plant. 100 Mb/s CWDM Star LE-327 Metro Fiber nm LE-46 Mux /Demux October 2004 Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution 5

Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution CWDM Linear Drop Architecture The LightningEdge CWDM solution enables s to be deployed as subscribers are turned up without any impact to existing services. Up to ten 3-port OSP s can be cascaded from a λ. The OSP s can be placed in OSP splice enclosures or located at the customer premise permitting the CWDM solution to more easily adapt to the existing fiber plant. 100 Mb/s CWDM Linear Drop LE-327 LE Gb/s CWDM Ring CWDM Ring Architecture The LightningEdge 4-port and CWDM components can be used to build 10-lambda LE route-diverse rings that provide maximum service protection with capital expenditures required only as new customers are added. The example to the left shows dedicated 1 Gb/s drops, but the Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities of the World Wide Packets LE-311 and platforms permit multiple customers to be provisioned on each 1 Gb/s connection. 6 Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing Solution October 2004

In Service Fiber Current CWDM products have not been designed to be deployed with existing in service fiber and require dark fiber or replacement of existing 1310 nm optics with CWDM specific lambdas. The LightningEdge 4λ λ and 10 λ CWDM components have been designed with an integrated expansion channel that facilitates simple integration with in service fiber plants. The 4λ λ and 10 λ CWDM components can be used back-to-back, or in conjunction with the 3-port OSP Wideband to add/drop 1310 nm lambdas. 10 Gb/s CWDM Trunk nm 1310nm Expansion Port 1310nm nm Expansion Port In Service Simplex Fiber 5 Gb/s Simplex CWDM Trunk The LightningEdge CWDM solution has even been designed to add CWDM capabilities to in service single strand simplex fiber that typically use 1310 nm and 1550 nm lambdas for full-duplex communications. Up to 8 lambdas supporting four additional 1 Gb/s full- duplex links can be added to existing in service simplex fiber using two LightningEdge 10 λ CWDM components.
