7 Louisa Master of Computer Networks and Distributed Systems Antwerp University Nokia Bell Labs intern in Advanced Media Access Control in LoRa Networks Jonathan Attended the internship before starting his Masters in Computer Science this fall KU Leuven IP intern in Customer Network Disruptive Testing Bell Labs is very reputable in the telecommunications field because of its diverse portfolio and I am glad to have had my Research Internship here. I had an overview of the lab environment, the Bell Labs team, the organizational structure, and working culture. This will be useful for me because I intend to look for job opportunities in a multinational company after my graduation. Emil Master in Mathematical Engineering at KU Leuven Nokia Bell Labs interim in Machine learning for broadband Wireline Access It is quite interesting to see the things you learned and heard about during your education happening in an industrial context for the first time. What strikes me most is the sheer scale of things: the projects Nokia s employees work on are far bigger than I could have imagine beforehand and simply too vast to be entirely understood by any single person or team. Although the different departments, and even the people within these departments, have very diverse ways of working, everything happens in an organized and efficient fashion. I also consider the international aspect (colleagues from all over the world working in Antwerp, communicating with software developers in offices abroad) to be quite enriching, as well as the possibility to have some in-depth conversations with employees. It was a great experience to be involved with research on real-world problems. While I was here, I had the feeling that my ideas and contributions were valued and that I was not just an intern. I also learned a lot from colleagues with different backgrounds from my own. In the next pages, you will discover the internship opportunities offered by our teams in Antwerp. 23 Channel Characterization in Powerline Communication Q3 Type: Internship Duration: up to 12 weeks As network operators are continuously modifying and improving the network infrastructure to support the always increasing bitrates, consumers are often reluctant to follow the same trend inside their own homes. Consumers refuse to perform modifications to their households and prefer non-invasive data-transportation techniques. A well-known approach that tackles this issue is the configuration of a Wi-Fi network in the home, but also powerline communication (PLC) is often used. PLC utilises already present powerlines, that were embedded into walls during construction of the home, for highspeed data communication. Since typically all rooms are supplied with power sockets, PLC provides excellent coverage compared to the more conventional Wi-Fi. PLC has proven its usability and has been widely adopted. However, to provide consumers a suiting non-invasive in-home network infrastructure for the bitrates of the future, current solutions are inadequate. You will be working with the Copper Access and Indoor team, who's main activities are centred around the design of next generation copper access technologies. Two recent innovative Gigabit technologies are G.fast and the world record XG-fast technology developed by Bell Labs achieving 10 Gbit/s data rate transmission over traditional copper lines. The focus of this internship will be on the investigation of the channel characteristics in a PLC system. Dependent on the background and interest of the student, the specific task can be delimited. The goal of this work is the characterization of channels found in powerline communication systems to gain a better understanding and allow such systems to support the bitrates of the future. You will build up knowledge on the transmission and noise characteristics of powerline networks. Starting with literature study, you will gain knowledge on the state of the art in powerline communication. Through interaction with the team, you will obtain insight in the challenges that are presented in this area and you will try to devise suitable solutions. You will develop and validate solutions through combining numerical simulations (e.g. Matlab) with theoretical analysis and cable measurements. You will document and present the developed techniques and results. Enrolled student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, preferably in Master. The work will consider creating a testbed that is compliant with current wireless technologies and can be integrated with the ongoing standardizations. This shall be achieved by means of network simulators with emulation capabilities (e.g. ns-3) or open source USRPs for prototyping. The main focus of our experiments will be on defining the performance gains of a fully automated wireless network management solution (i.e. self-manageable) while reusing the existing infrastructures. Create a testbed and/or NS-3 type of simulator that allows for the creation of a network level demonstrations. You will be responsible to create a testbed and/or system level simulator that allows to create a network of autonomous nodes. The target is to have dynamic interface with capabilities to add different nodes and user mobility for indoor applications. The repositioning of the nodes and users may be automated or manual depending on the use case and requirements. Concurrently, real-time interaction and interdependencies between the developed selfmanageable architecture and other legacy or future indoor systems will be considered. 29 Learning uncertainty sets XM Type: Internship Duration: up to 12 weeks Method-oriented networks not only abstract distribution channels (information becoming independent from its location and storage support) but also functions (the sender pushes an operation instead of a location). In this context, the objective is to model computational resource placement and assignment under uncertain requests/demands. This problem shares similarity with the multi-source multi-product (capacitated) facility location problem ((c)flp) which consists in choosing a subset of facilities (computing servers) to open and assign every client to the minimum set of open facilities to satisfy their individual demands, while ensuring that no facility is assigned to more clients than its capacity. The major difference compared to existing cflp variants is that in the present case demands correspond to the realization of a serial computational task requiring the involvement of a set of facilities (computing units) assuming that each unit can cover part of the computational demand; hence, involving the possible decomposition of the operation. In other terms, demands can be seen as requests for ordered product mix. The goal is to find a set of open facilities and an assignment that minimizes the sum of opening cost of each facility, connection cost and processing cost to customer demands; thus, obtaining the network answer as fast as possible and at least cost. Investigate the interplay between machine learning and robust optimization: As solutions to optimization problems can exhibit high sensitivity to perturbations in the problem parameters and in turn rendering infeasible or suboptimal solution, we consider modeling the optimization problem by means of the set induced robust optimization method to immunize solutions against bounded uncertainty in the parameters of the problem. This technique intrinsically depends on the features of the uncertainty sets. When considering data-driven statistical methods, the key question becomes how to perform inference tasks (density estimation and hypothesis test) from samples and when considering model-driven methods how to produce and select an hypothesis which best explains the data. In both cases, the goal is to minimize the difference between the solution obtained using the true distribution vs. estimated/modeled distribution. Key Responsibilities The tasks to be performed are directly linked to the objectives listed in the mission, assuming that the formulation of the optimization problem as well as its robust counterpart are available: Design/exploit machine learning algorithms to learn uncertainty sets under various assumptions (endogenous vs. exogenous uncertainty, data-driven/ non-parametric vs. distributional/parametric models). Formulate and solve (numerical execution) the corresponding mathematical program. Compare uncertainty set construction/design methods. Enrolled student in Master of Computer Science or Applied Mathematics and/or Operational Research. Studies orientation on optimization (combinatorial, continuous, robust), machine learning algorithmic. Experience with solvers (CPLEX, COIN-OR, etc.), machine learning toolbox/libraries (shogun, weka, etc.). Internship opportunities Belgium 27

30 Low-latency video streaming app for controlling a toy race car VG Type: Internship Duration: up to 12 weeks At Nokia Bell Labs, we are solving network issues of tomorrow. Video consumption is drastically changing. There was a time that it was one-way traffic only, today it can be two-way communication and soon it will include new interactive components, for instance when you are remotely controlling a device using visual feedback. This feedback needs to come at zero latency not to crash into anything, but you know that when the network is bad, any video link would stall. We are trying to fix that by creating a more flexible, random access representation of that video feed. This representation can better cope with bandwidth fluctuations and packet losses during transmission. Your objective would be to showcase this new video representation format by creating a fun demonstrator. Imagine for instance that we want to race a toy car through an obstacle course at a remote location. On the race car, we mount a smartphone with a camera sending visual feedback. Can you ensure that the car can still be driven (safely) under very adverse network conditions? Learn about the new video representation format. Port our video format encoder to a mobile device, likely Android. Explore hardware acceleration on the mobile s GPU, using OpenCL or CUDA. Think about altering algorithms to meet hardware specifications of mobile devices. Integrate the video link between the mobile device on the race car and the remote controlling device. Start racing! Depending on your skills, interests and pace: Research stretch: explore alternative tracks for the video representation format. Engineering stretch: explore other use cases, such as video communication. Possible shortcut: showcase the representation format on the device without actual transmission, emulating bad network conditions.. The tasks to be performed are directly linked to the objectives listed here above assuming that the formulation of the optimization problem as well as its robust counterpart are available: Design/exploit machine learning algorithms to learn uncertainty sets under various assumptions (endogenous vs. exogenous uncertainty, data-driven/ non-parametric vs. distributional/parametric models). Formulate and solve (numerical execution) the corresponding mathematical program. (Compare uncertainty set construction/design methods. Enrolled student in Master of Engineering, Computer Science. Android programming skills. Knowledge of OpenCL or CUDA is a plus. During the internship, the student will come in contact with several aspects of working in a research environment such as Nokia Bell Labs: Creative working environment with open atmosphere to facilitate discussion and interaction with other Nokia Bell Labs researchers in various domains. State-of-the-art computing and visualization equipment. Flexibility to experiment and explore your ideas. 28 Internship opportunities Belgium

32 Multi-host network emulator with Docker VI Type: Internship Duration: up to 12 weeks As an engineer, you like to know how your application behaves under varying network conditions. Network emulators allow you to just do that, without the need for a large or expensive physical testbed. Today, several network emulators are out there: ns-3, mininet, etc. There s a learning curve for each of them and some even require programming skills. Inside Nokia Bell Labs, we have developed our own light-weight emulator, with easy testing and visualisation of containerised applications as its primary focus. It consists of a web application (vue.js) and a controller backend (node.js). The web application allows you to create networks from scratch or load a previously created one from a JSON description. All nodes are Docker containers and the parameters of the links between them can be changed on the fly distributed systems research and engineering hands-on development experience on both implementing algorithms, as well demonstrator development. Deploying applications/services in the cloud learn to use energy grid simulations to evaluate the accuracy of the models. Our network emulator works on a single host. This is fine for many setups, but for larger emulations, we need a multi-host setup. Docker has recently included features to support that (swarmkit). Your role will be to extend the controller app to support multi-host and let it control multiple physical or virtual machines that run docker in swarm mode. The networking code has to be changed so that overlay networking is used when containers run on different hosts. The web application has to be updated as well, so that nodes can be added or removed. Extend the node.js controller app and the single page web application. Update the JSON description to support multihost, while staying backwards compatible. Create demonstrator. Enrolled student in Master of Engineering, Computer Science. Experienced in javascript and HTML5. Basic knowledge of networking. Healthy interest in Docker. 30 Internship opportunities Belgium

37 Ultra-HD 360 Video Saliency Analysis for VR Streaming VK Type: Internship Duration: 6 months (renewable) Streamed 360 Video and Virtual Reality (VR) are becoming more and more popular for many applications ranging from entertainment, gaming, broadcasting, video surveillance to user generated content. A good example of high quality 360 capture systems is the Nokia OZO camera that records 360 video, which can be transmitted live at 4K resolution. Using VR goggles, the user can watch this type of content as if he/she was there, as the video viewpoint is instantly moving in sync with the tracked or sensed head motion in the 360 captured content. There are still challenges related to consuming this type of immersive video content. One of the most important ones is to be able to assist the user in watching that content by hinting what viewpoints are the most interesting and to maximize video quality where it matters. In order to achieve this, we propose for this internship to evaluate the visual saliency of 360 video frames, for example (but not limited to) motion content, the presence of special textures or objects and faces. The intern will implement selected saliency analysis tools using open source computer vision libraries on Ultra High Definition (UHD) 360 Video content. The objective is to find the best trade-offs between analysis accuracy and real-time performance. Optionally, the code will be ported using OpenCL or CUDA on GPU. The topic will be adapted to the number of accepted students. Learn and experiment with our internal 4K 360 video VR streaming prototype. Investigate real-time saliency evaluation and object detection techniques available in OpenCV or other opensource libraries including deep learning techniques. Implement a visualization of this saliency and objects as an overlay on the streamed VR video. Assess accuracy vs. speed trade-offs in the selected computer vision tools. Implementation in C/C++ of a proof of concept, connected to our existing prototype. Efficient reporting of the tests, progress and difficulties in the process. Student in last year of Master of Engineering Electricity, Electronics or Computer Science or Ph.D. student in Engineering Electricity, Electronics or Computer Science. Experience in C/C++ is a must. Experience with Computer Vision is a plus. The topic can be adapted in case several students are selected and also involve hardware acceleration with OpenCL. The intern will work within the Nokia Bell Labs Novel Media Coding team. Internship opportunities Belgium 35

38 Stochastic Optimization XQ Type: Internship Duration: 6 months (renewable) In multi-stage stochastic programming (MSSP), the uncertainty in parameters, e.g. demands, yields, defining a decision problem are represented by probability distributions. The term multistage refers to the ability to make decisions at multiple stages, and thus reflecting the dynamic nature of the problem. The interactions between the stochastic and decisions processes are modelled so that the decision-maker can take corrective decisions (recourse) and actions as uncertainty is revealed sequentially over multiple stages (time periods). Compared to exogenous uncertainty where decisions cannot influence the stochastic process, in case of endogenous uncertainty, the stochastic process depends on the decisions that can alter it by either changing the probability distribution or resolving the uncertainty partially (or even fully). Recently, the problem of finding optimal decisions with gradual reduction of uncertainty in the yields has been formulated as a decision-dependent MSSP where action (e.g. investment) plans reduce uncertainty and time-varying distributions describe uncertainty. Stochastic programming applied to information networks: assume that individual entities composing a distributed information system are modelled as information processing agents performing a joint task, e.g., serve external timevarying uncertain demands. Each agent performs at each time period, multi-modal capacity allocation decision (note: capacities remain finite) together with its routing decision following various coordination/consensus processes that reduce the randomness in agents predictions and decisions; the objectives are to design, develop and evaluate: Decomposition methods for stochastic programs (applicable to distributed routing under uncertainty). Distributed decomposition methods for stochastic programs (applicable to distributed routing under uncertainty). Investigate performance tradeoffs under different state visibility mode (full state visibility, partial state visibility). The tasks to be performed are directly linked to the objectives listed here above and include: Formulate the corresponding multi-stage stochastic programming (MSSP) model, demonstrate and validate its properties. Extend the multi-stage stochastic programs to multiagent/distributed routing decision processes with uncertain demands; for this purpose, decomposition methods are considered as the technique of choice in order to enable combining both decision processes (routing and resource allocation). Enrolled student in Master or PhD in Applied Mathematics, Optimization, Math. Programming. Application (numerical execution) for information routing under various uncertainty assumptions (endogeneous uncertainty, exogeneous uncertainty, mixture). Experience in stochastic programming and optimization (including decomposition techniques). Experience in stochastic programming solvers and modeling tools. Capability to work independently. Abstract reasoning. Analytic and Synthetic skills. 36 Internship opportunities Belgium

39 Machine Learning XP Type: Internship Duration: 6 months (renewable) Bringing together graph theory and probability theory, probabilistic graphical models provide a unifying formalism for capturing the complex dependencies among random variables, and building large-scale multivariate statistical models. As part of this broad class of models, undirected graphical models such as Markov Networks represent a joint probability distribution as a graph whose undirected edges express the (symmetric) dependency between random variables represented by the vertices of the graph. These models find a wide applicability nowadays well beyond image processing. However, the structure of the Markov network (Markov Random Field or MRF) is constructed manually. The main reason stems form the complexity and lack of effective algorithms for learning the structure of Markov networks from input data. Consequently, MRF are more typically used when the domain structure is known in advance, so that the learning task often limit to its parameters (weights). In this respect the challenge consists to provide a computationally efficient method for learning Markov network structure from data. Discovery of Markov Random Field structure: The goal of Markov random field structure learning is to discover regions of high probability in instance space, form features to represent them, and learn the corresponding weights. More precisely, learning the underlying graph structure of a Markov random field refers to the problem of determining if there is an edge between each pair of nodes, given i.i.d. samples drawn from the joint distribution of the vector of random variables X. The conventional techniques for learning Markov random fields structure learning correspond to two different interpretations of a graphical model. On the one hand, to learn the underlying graph, the parameter estimation techniques exploit the conditional independence interpretation of a graphical model which lead to a factorization of the joint probability function according to the cliques of the graph. These techniques are tailored for a specific parametric form of the probability distribution by assuming a certain form of the potential function; thereby they relate the structure learning problem to one of finding a sparse maximum likelihood estimator of a distribution from its samples. When a parametric family is known, the (log-)likelihood of the data is written as a function (often convex) of the parameters of the distribution; this likelihood is then maximized with added regularizers to find these parameters. On the other hand, methods based on learning conditional independence relations between the variables rely on the notion that a node s Markov blanket, i.e. its neighborhood in the graphical model, makes a node conditionally independent of other nodes. These methods are potential agnostic, i.e., to learn the graph structure they do not rely on the knowledge of the underlying parametrization or make assumptions on the parametrization of the distribution. Instead, they involve an exhaustive search over all potential neighborhoods of a node which results in a high computational complexity for the algorithms which need some assumption on the properties of the underlying distribution and graph structure (such as the maximum node degree) in order to succeed. Hence, search strategies are often based on heuristics including greedy search strategies, e.g., greedy hill-climbing, greedily adding nodes that give the highest reduction in conditional entropy. The recent characterization of Markov Random Fields (generalized of Markov chains) as hypergraph (generalization of graphs) has opened a different perspective from an algorithmic point of view. Combination with multilevel coarsening (clustering) of hyperedges while retaining as much as much possible the structural properties of the original hypergraph offers for instance an interesting direction compared to the principles underlying conventional methods. The tasks to be performed are directly linked to the objectives listed here above and include: Document the most recent advances in conventional MRF structure learning methods. Selection of subset of conventional techniques (based on pre-defined criteria and metrics). Comparative evaluation of the selected methods with the hypergraph-based method (by simulation). Enrolled student in Master or PhD in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science (orientation AI, machine learning), Statistics. Experience in Math. Programming (matlab, octave, R). Experience in using machine learning toolboxes (e.g., weka, shogun) is a plus. Capability to work independently. Abstract reasoning. Analytic and synthetic skills. 41 The Energy Solutions team in Belgium is part of the international Network Implementation organization of Nokia Mobile Networks. We are a specialized team working on large scale goals for energy solutions in Mobile industry. Creating miracles may be out of our reach, but adopting a holistic approach to the global energy requirements will certainly help address the needs of the mobile industry in a much better way. Even though most of the mobile operators have a global footprint, yet they perpetually encounter local challenges associated with energy. Issues like energy losses, lack of commercial grids or poor quality grid supply force them to incur incremental costs in terms of both the utility grid and the operational expenditure of mobile sites in general. With the passage of time, consumer awareness on CO2 emissions and its environmental impact has also gone up. Mobile operators are aligning their policies in order to ensure that they lower their Network operational expenditure to a minimum. At the same time, they promote green initiatives, as well as directing their Corporate and Social responsibility campaigns to address environmental objectives with regard to both regulatory needs and end-customer expectations. No longer considered as a nice-to-have policy, environmental compliance & cost awareness is steadily becoming an integral part of a company s strategy!
