Use the appropriate McQuay Engineering Data (ED), known as the Protocol Information document, to integrate the unit into your network. The Protocol Information document contains addressing details, BACnet protocol information, and a list of the data points available to the network. See the Reference Documents section of this manual for Protocol Information document numbers. 5 General Information This manual contains the information you need to install the BACnet Communication Module for IP or Ethernet, incorporate it into the network, and maintain it.! WARNING Electric shock hazard. Can cause personal injury or equipment damage. This equipment must be properly grounded. Only personnel that are knowledgeable in the operation of the equipment being controlled must perform connections and service to the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller.! CAUTION Static sensitive components. Can cause equipment damage. Discharge any static electrical charge by touching the bare metal inside the control panel before performing any service work. Never unplug cables, circuit board terminal blocks, or power plugs while power is applied to the panel. NOTICE This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with this instruction manual, may cause interference to radio communications. It has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his or her own expense. McQuay International disclaims any liability resulting from any interference or for the correction thereof. Description The MicroTech II BACnet Communication Module incorporates a McQuay Maverick II Rooftop Unit Controller into a BACnet local area network (LAN). It supports BACnet over Ethernet (10Base-T) or BACnet/IP data link layers (physical layer). The BACnet Communication Module mounts directly into the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. This module gives you access to the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller variables and parameters via BACnet. Figure 1. BACnet Communication Module (Component Side) IM 853 5

6 Application Component Data The BACnet Communication Module connects the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller to the Building Automation System (BAS) on a BACnet Local Area Network. It is the interface adapter for the exchange of BACnet objects between the network and the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. Figure 2 shows the external connectors of the BACnet Communication Module. Figure 2. BACnet Communication Module External Connectors (Top View) Pushbutton Status LED Ethernet LED Network Connection 1 3/16 2 3/8 8-Pin Connector Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) The BACnet Communication Module has a Status LED and an Ethernet LED to indicate communication activity and status of the BACnet Communication Module. These indicators are visible even when the BACnet Communication Module is installed in the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. Status LED The status LED indicates the communication state between the BACnet Communication Module and the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. During power-up, the status LED will show the following sequence: Off 2 seconds after startup: quick flashing red-green 5 seconds after startup: steady green 62 seconds after startup: regularly flashing (see Communication State with the BACnet Communication Module section below for color descriptions) Communication State with the BACnet Communication Module After startup has completed, the status LED will regularly blink to show the communication status between the BACnet Communication Module and the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. The table below defines the meaning of the various colors. 6 IM 853

7 Status LED Color Quick Flashing Green Slow Flashing Red Green/Red Flashing Meaning Communication has been established between the BACnet Communication Module and the rooftop unit controller (i.e., rooftop is on-line). Communication between the BACnet Communication Module and the rooftop unit controller has not been established (i.e., rooftop is offline). BACnet Communication Module detects an error or a temporary answer fault from the rooftop unit controller. Ethernet LED The Ethernet LED shows the communication status between the BACnet Communication Module and the Ethernet network. The table below describes the status of the Ethernet LED. Ethernet LED Color Red Green Meaning Communication is not established. This can be due to several issues, including: a cable defect, no power to the unit controller, or the cable is not connected to the network at the other end. Communication is established. Note: The color of the Ethernet LED is based only on the electrical connection. The BACnet Communication Module checks for the correct signals from the remote device in the Ethernet cable. There are no parameter settings in the BACnet Communication Module that affect this LED. BACnet Network Connector An RJ45 connector connects the BACnet Communication Module to the Ethernet Network. 8-Pin Header The 8-pin header connects the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller to the BACnet Communication Module. 8 Installation Mounting The BACnet Communication Module is available as a field-installed kit only; it is not a factoryinstalled option. The BACnet Communication Module may be ordered through McQuayTools or through McQuay Parts. See Replacement Kit section on page 16 for details.! CAUTION Electrostatic discharge hazard. Can cause equipment damage. This equipment contains sensitive electronic components that may be damaged by electrostatic discharge from your hands. Before you handle a communications module, you need to touch a grounded object, such as the metal enclosure, in order to discharge the electrostatic potential in your body. Mounting a BACnet Communication Module To mount a BACnet Communication Module: 1. Remove power from the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. 2. Locate the Serial Card slot on the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller (see Figure 3). 3. Remove the cover from the Serial Card slot if it has not already been removed. Use a small screwdriver to pry the cover off from one end. 4. Grasp the BACnet Communication Module, with the network connector on the underside. The 8- pin receptacle must mate to the 8-pin plug in the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. The plug has a guide on each end to direct it into the mating guide on the receptacle. Figure 4 details the Serial Card slot showing the 8-pin plug that mates to the receptacle on the BACnet Communication Module. Note: This operation relies more on fitting rather than seeing the connectors mate. 5. Insert the BACnet Communication Module, pointing up, into the slot, rolling it into a level position as you move it into the slot. 6. Keeping the BACnet Communication Module level, move it in the slot until you feel the connectors line up. 7. When you feel the connectors align, press the BACnet Communication Module into the connector. Verify that the module is firmly seated in the connector. 8. Mount the plastic cover provided with the BACnet Communication Module. 8 IM 853

11 Replacing an Existing BACnet Communication Module To replace a BACnet Communication Module: 1. Remove power from the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. 2. Locate the Serial Card slot on the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller (see Figure 3). 3. Pull the network cable connector from the BACnet Communication Module. 4. Remove the cover from the Serial Card slot. Use a small screwdriver to pry it off from one end. 5. Grasp the BACnet Communication Module and carefully pull it from the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. 6. Grasp the BACnet Communication Module, with the network connector on the underside. The 8- pin receptacle must mate to the 8-pin plug in the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. The plug has a guide on each end to direct the BACnet Communication Module into the mating guide on the receptacle. Figure 4 shows a detail of the Serial Card slot with the 8-pin plug that mates to the receptacle on the BACnet Communication Module. 12 Integration Network Addressing Integrating the BACnet Communication Module into a BAS involves three steps: Physically connecting the unit (node) to the network Addressing and establishing communications with the unit Configuring the unit to the building BACnet over Ethernet Addressing The Ethernet MAC address of the BACnet Communication Module is a six-octet address assigned during manufacturing. It is fixed and cannot be changed. Use this address to access the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller on a BACnet Ethernet network. BACnet IP Addressing There are three parameters that must be configured properly to establish communication between the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller and the BACnet IP network: BACnet IP Address, IP Subnet Mask, and IP Router Address. See your system integrator for additional information regarding BACnet IP addressing. Configuring the BACnet Communication Module The BACnet Communication Module can be configured using the keypad/display on the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller or by using the BACnet Communication Module Configuration Tool (see Table 1 for a list of configurable parameters). To use the keypad/display, refer to the Configuring the BACnet Communication Module using the Keypad/Display section of this document. To use the BACnet Communication Module Configuration Tool, refer to the Configuring the BACnet Communication Module using the Configuration Tool section of this document. The BACnet Communication Module ships with a factory default IP Subnet Mask ( ) and IP Address ( ). Configuring the BACnet Communication Module using the Keypad/Display Note: Refer to operating manuals OM 848 or OM 849 for details regarding the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller keypad/display. To Configure using the Keypad/Display: 1. Navigate to the display menu on the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller by pressing the upper left keypad button (with the left arrow icon) and lower left keypad button (with the down arrow icon) simultaneously. 2. If prompted for a password, enter: Navigate to the Network Config Menu (press the button with the right arrow icon once.) 4. Change the Type = field to BACnet IP or BACnet Ethernet. 5. Change Configure BACnet? to Yes. 6. Modify the parameters as necessary (see Table 1 for a complete list.) Note: The IP Address on the keypad/display will appear in the following format: /24. In this case, is the IP Address and 24 refers to the Subnet Mask. The Subnet Mask is displayed in Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) format. Examples of common decoded values include: 8= , 16= and 24= For a complete list of CIDR codes, see Appendix B. 12 IM 853

13 7. Set Configuration OK? to Yes when all changes have been completed. Doing so will write the changes to the BACnet Communication Module. 8. Cycle power to the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. 9. On the Network Config menu, verify the Actual IP Address. This procedure may take several minutes. Table 1. This menu item will be hidden if the No./This must be set to Yes to enable the rest of the keypad containing the BACnet parameters. network Type is something other than BACnet. IP Address/Netmask IP Address and Subnet Mask of /16 the BACnet Communication Module Gateway Gateway Address. Device Instance Configuration OK? Actual IP Address /Device Instance of the BACnet Communication Module. Setting this to Yes writes all the BACnet setup variables to the BACnet Communication Module. Verify that variables are set correctly. The current IP address of the BACnet Communication Module 3001/This must be unique throughout the entire BACnet network. No /16 Configuring the BACnet Communication Module using the Configuration Tool The BACnet Communication Module can also be configured using the BACnet Communication Module Configuration Tool. Use the Configuration Tool in place of the keypad/display to modify the BACnet setup parameters and/or other parameters that are not available on the keypad (UDP Port and Location, for example). The Configuration Tool is also required for downloading new firmware or a metric CSV (Comma-Separated) file. The CSV file is needed if the BAS requires metric units to be displayed. The Configuration Tool and the CSV files are available as free downloads on II Controls/Application Software. Refer to the BACnet Communication Module Configuration Tool for Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller User Manual (UM 855) for complete details. Note: The CSV file maps all variables from the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller to the BACnet network. This mapping includes the type of units that are displayed (in either English or Metric). Do not modify this file. IM

14 Note: Changing the Units= property from the Rooftop unit controller keypad/display will cause the present value to be converted to the correct units. You must have this value set to Metric if the Metric CSV file is loaded into your BACnet Communication Module or set to English if the English comma separated value file is loaded into your BACnet Communication Module. Record all setpoint values before changing the Units= property since this will cause all setpoints in the Rooftop to return to their default values. Enabling the DHCP Feature The BACnet/IP (B/IP) address of the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller consists of the four-octet IP address followed by the two-octet UDP (User Datagram Protocol) port number. The BACnet/IP address is a six-octet value analogous to a MAC address. The IP address portion of the BACnet/IP address must be unique in the BACnet network segment. The default UDP port number in the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller is (BAC0 in hexadecimal). The BACnet Communication Module supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) IP addressing. By default, this feature is disabled. Use the keypad/display to enable the DHCP by entering as the IP address. In a DHCP-based network, the BACnet Communication Module automatically receives the required parameters from the DHCP server. Resetting the IP Address and Subnet Mask View the keypad/display on the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller to obtain the IP address if it is lost or forgotten. The BACnet Communication Module can also be reset to the factory default IP address and Subnet Mask. To reset the defaults, follow one of the following procedures, depending on whether or not the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller has power. Resetting the IP Address and Subnet Mask with Power Off: 1. Unplug network connections from the BACnet Communication Module. 2. Hold down the pushbutton on the BACnet Communication Module. 3. Apply power to the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. 4. Keep the pushbutton pressed for at least 20 seconds. 5. Release the pushbutton once the Status LED starts to blink red. 6. After three slow red blinks, the LED will become green, and then to indicate the command has been successful, it will rapidly blink dark red three times. 7. Using the keypad/display, modify network settings as necessary. 8. Cycle power to the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. Resetting the IP Address and Subnet Mask with Power On: 1. Unplug network connections from the BACnet Communication Module. 2. Press the pushbutton for more than five seconds and no more than ten seconds. 3. Release the pushbutton. 4. After another 5 seconds, press and hold the pushbutton again. 5. The status LED will stop flashing and then it will flash red quickly. 6. Release the pushbutton when the status LED starts flashing red slowly. 7. After three slow red blinks, the LED will become green, and then, to indicate the command has been successful, it will rapidly blink dark red three times. 8. Using the keypad/display, modify network settings as necessary. 9. Cycle power to the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller. 14 IM 853

15 Note: After successfully using the pushbutton, the BACnet Communication Module only retains the factory-specified default parameters until the next reboot is performed. The BACnet Communication Module will implement the latest user-specified parameters after a reboot has been performed without the pushbutton being pressed. The Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller keypad retains the parameter values prior to the pushbutton being pressed even though the factory defaults are actually being used. IM

16 Service Information Test Procedures Replacement Kit If you can control the Maverick Rooftop Unit Controller from the keypad/display, but you are not able to communicate via the network: Check the network wiring Check communications Use the standard TCP/IP suite of protocols to check your connectivity with other devices. For example, type ping <IP address of the MicroTech II BACnet Communications Module>. If you get a response from that IP address, you are connected to the BACnet Communication Module. If you do not get a response, verify the the BACnet Communication Module and the PC network settings.
