Introduction The Alcatel 1642 Edge Multiplexer is a Synchronous Add/Drop Multiplexer for SDH-to-the-customer applications. It is part of the OMSN (Optical Multiservice nodes) transmission equipment family, which comply with the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) defined in ITU-T Recommendation G.707. Compatible with existing plesiochronous systems as well as with the installed SDH network, the 1642 Edge Multiplexer is a full ADM equipment operating at 155 (STM-1) MBit/s bit rate. It can be configured as a Multi Line Terminal Multiplexer or as an Add/Drop Multiplexer for point-to-point and ring applications. A wide range of different customer tributary signals can be multiplexed or added/dropped into STM-1 aggregates Edge Multiplexer has a symmetrical architecture whereby all traffic ports (PDH and SDH) of the same type have the same functionality and behavior and there is no inherent split between tributaries and aggregates. The traffic ports can be 2Mb/s, 34Mb/s, 45Mb/s, STM-1 optical and Ethernet/FE. A non-blocking matrix function allows full access to 6xSTM-1 equivalent payloads at the Low Order VC level Edge Multiplexer is composed of a very compact chassis and of plug-in units. The chassis can be mounted in 19 racks or used as desktop unit. Whether in telecommunication office environments or at enterprise locations, 1642 Edge Multiplexer has the right powering solution (DC or AC) and optional power redundancy can provide equipment protection. Alarms, performance monitoring, configuration setting and all information about the equipment status are available through the craft interface to a local personal computer and through the Q interface to the Network Management System. Network Management Systems can access the 1642 Edge Multiplexer via the SDH DCC network or directly via LAN. Both the interfaces to the local terminal and to the element manager are based on standard QB3 CMIP protocol stack and management messages. An orderwire channel, optionally available, facilitates link maintenance. Auxiliary channels are transmitted on the overhead bytes, according to ITU-T recommendations. STM-1 optical modules operating at 1300 nm and 1550 nm are available to cover short and long haul applications. TECHNICAL INFORMATION GUIDE ALCATEL 2 >

Advantages The main strategic advantages of the OMSN SDH ADM family are: Completeness: A comprehensive range of network elements for all transmission needs, from customer premises applications to metropolitan networks, to long-haul and ultra long-haul terrestrial and trans-oceanic applications. Everything under control of the same management system. Simplicity: The unnumbered possibilities offered by OMSN for network construction are provided by the fewest building blocks. Future-readiness: In addition to traditional transmission applications, OMSN deliver integrated ATM switching and Ethernet switching capabilities. Flexible nodes able to feature different networking functions are becoming vital in order to improve bandwidth utilization in data-dominated networks and to save extra-equipment costs. Backward-compatibility: OMSN guarantees full inter-working with the existing installed base in broad terms: from optical compatibility, to DCC (Data Communications Channels) compatibility, to network management. In other words, existing networks can be upgraded with new equipment without constraints. Management: No matter how the network is built or what networking technologies are used for edge and backbone applications (MPLS, ATM, SDH, WDM ) OMSN delivers one unified management solution. In addition, 1642 Edge Multiplexer brings the following specific benefits: Cost-effectiveness: Network operators can choose from a variety of units with an optimized number of ports, allowing them to buy just what they need. It allows the carrier to reduce the initial CAPEX while keeping the possibility of future upgrades. Full-ADM capabilities at end-customer premises: It can be used to deliver 2Mb/s and Ethernet/Fast Ethernet leased lines as well as higher-end services such as 34Mb/s, 45Mb/s, STM-1 with a versatile and compact chassis ideal for enterprise locations. It empowers the carrier s leased line service offering with the strong and extensive SDH end-to-end path control and monitoring capabilities Flexibility: A Compact ADM-1 card concentrates 2xSTM-1 interfaces, SDH matrix, clock reference and equipment control functions. 4 slots are dedicated to traffic ports, for 2Mb/s services and above. The system can be configured for example as STM-1 Terminal Multiplexer with 8x2Mb/s plus 6xEthernet/Fast Ethernet for office interconnect services or as STM-1 ADM with 112x2Mb/s. Reliability: 1642 Edge Multiplexer offers Sub-Network Connection Protection (SNCP). This allows to insert the 1642 Edge Multiplexer directly into access rings or to connect it to access rings via point-topoint unprotected or protected links. SNCP allows also end-to-end protection of SDH paths. Dual hubbing to two distinct central office ADMs is also possible Edge Multiplexer can also offer 48V power redundancy for equipment protection. Easiness: 1642 Edge Multiplexer has a centralized control architecture that limits the presence of processors and software to the Compact ADM-1 card. Traffic ports have no on-board processors and may be reused from one equipment to another or retrieved from stocks with no worries about software versions Edge Multiplexer also offers local and remote SW download, has the minimum possible set of replaceable items. 6 Applications The 1642 Edge Multiplexer can be used for transmission over G.652, G.653 and G.654 fibers. The main applications can be identified in the following areas: Delivery of SDH/Ethernet services to customer premises Local and metropolitan rings point to point links with intermediate drop/insert and/or regeneration stations; Metro Core/Backbone Metro Edge Metro Access Metro CPE General Description 1642 Edge Multiplexer is an STM-1 Network Element for transmission and cross-connection of a wide range of PDH and SDH signals. It can operate as a multi Terminal or Add/Drop Multiplexer Edge Multiplexer consists of the following parts: Chassis (four tributary slots) Compact ADM-1 unit (providing 2xSTM-1 optical + central functions) 1 Four slots for any traffic ports that can be of the following types: 8x2Mbit/s unit 28x2Mbit/s unit 1x34Mbit/s unit 1x45Mbit/s unit 1xSTM-1 optical unit 6xE/FE unit Figure Edge Multiplexer Application The Compact ADM unit provides the following functionalities: Up to 2 optical STM-1 modules SDH Matrix function CRU function Equipment controller function Auxiliary and order-wire function The Compact ADM-1 unit is used to terminate the network ring (or line). According to the network topology SNCP (Sub Network Connection Protection) inherent (SNCP/I) is provided at low order VCi levels Edge Multiplexer can realize non-intrusive Path Overhead Monitoring (POM) functions on 100% of Low Order and High Order VCs. Although the typical application for the 1642 Edge Multiplexer is in short reach urban rings, short and long haul optical interfaces are available for STM-1 applications. A centralized matrix implements the cross-connect function. It allows cross-connection between all traffic ports at all VCi (I=12,3) levels. The clock reference function, located in the Compact ADM unit synchronizes the 1642 Edge Multiplexer and provides generation and distribution of a synchronization clock. A wide auxiliary capacity, in accordance with SDH standards, is available for embedded services. An Engineering Order Wire channel, with DTMF signaling, can be accessed by a micro telephone for maintenance facility. TECHNICAL INFORMATION GUIDE ALCATEL 4 >

The clock reference function, located in the SDH matrix unit, synchronizes the 1642 Edge Multiplexer and provides generation and distribution of a synchronization clock. The clock can be locked to an external 2Mb/s source, to any STM-n or 2Mbit/s traffic ports or to the internal oscillator. The SSM (Synchronization Status Message) quality and priority algorithms are supported. The control subsystem is also placed on the compact ADM unit. The Equipment Controller function provides configuration, alarm status and performance monitoring data. A software download facility (Local and Remote) is available in order to update the complete software of the control subsystem. The system can be managed either by a CMISE Craft Terminal running on a Personal Computer attached to the F interface or by the Alcatel Network Management System through the Q interface. In case 1642 Edge Multiplexers are divided into several sub-networks by other non-alcatel equipments, an additional 2Mb/s interface on 8X2M Retiming Unit is available for DCC or EOW transparent transmission. DCC or EOW information can be encapsulated in a 2Mb/s data flow in the unit and be transmitted in the network. At last it will be terminated in another 1642 Edge Multiplexer. The system may be powered directly by station battery feed (-48V) or through an internal AC/DC converter. 1 Different optical modules can be mixed in the same unit. Each interface is managed independently. TECHNICAL INFORMATION GUIDE ALCATEL 5 >

SDH Cross-Connect Subsystem The 1642 Edge Multiplexer SDH cross-connect is built upon a non-blocking matrix that can interconnect VC3s and VC12s between any SDH and PDH ports accessing the system. Several types of connections may be established, such as: unidirectional point-to-point bi-directional point-to-point unidirectional point-to-multipoint SNCP Drop & Continue The capacity of the matrix is up to 6x6 STM-1 equivalent ports at the Low Order VC level (378 X 378 VC12s). The protection mode may be revertive or non-revertive. Clock reference The synchronization subsystem provides the timing reference required by all components in the network element and represents the SDH Equipment Clock (SEC). The subsystem performs the functionality identified by the ITU-T recommendation G.783 as SDH Equipment Timing Source (SETS). The SETS function is realized by the SDH Matrix unit. A functional view of the SETS function in 1642 Edge Multiplexer is given in Figure 3 STM-n / 2Mb/s 2MHz / 2Mb/s SETG OSC Figure 3. Selector A Selector B OSC Squelch SETG Squelch Select C Synchronous Equipment Timing Generator Internal Oscillator function 1642 Edge Multiplexer SETS function The SETS accepts synchronization inputs from a number of sources: STM-n lines 2Mb/s traffic ports 2Mb/s external input internal oscillator Automatic selection of one of such sources is achieved by selector B using quality (SSM / Synchronization Status Message algorithm) or priority criteria. Also manual selection is possible. The SETS function produces two outputs. The NE clock reference is used as internal timing source and to time the outgoing SDH STM-n signals. One external 2Mb/s output is generated as a possible source for external devices. Up to 4 candidate references may be selected among all STM-n and 2Mb/s traffic ports in the system. 2Mb/s external input and output are available. When configured as 2Mb/s, the external I/Os can carry the SSM timing marker information. The SETG function has three modes of operation: locked, holdover and free-running. In holdover mode, the SETG holds the frequency of the last valid reference with a maximum drift of 0.37ppm per day. The accuracy of the local oscillator is ±4.6 ppm. 2MHz / 2Mb/s NE CLOCK REFERENCE TECHNICAL INFORMATION GUIDE ALCATEL 7 >

Control subsystem The control subsystem realizes the Synchronous Equipment Management Function (SEMF) defined by ITU-T Recommendation G.783. It communicates with external management systems through a standard QB3 CMIP interface. The management information model is compliant to the ITU-T G.774 series of recommendations. Communication with the local craft terminal is also based on the same interface. The control subsystem is responsible for applying the configuration requested by the element manager or craft terminal and to report the status of the equipment as well as alarm and performance information. It is also responsible to drive automatic protection switching Edge Multiplexer has a centralized control architecture, built upon a two-level model: Equipment Controller (EC) for DCC networking, CT/OS interface and data-base management Shelf Controller (SC) for provisioning, alarm detection, performance monitoring. The Shelf Controller processor implements the SDH functions in the shelf, for data collection (alarms, performance monitoring) and configuration provisioning purposes. The Message Communication Function (MCF) implemented by the Equipment Controller can manage up to 4 DCC channels (2 DCC channels on the middle row slots and 2 on Main control board). Selection of the STM-n ports and of the DCCm or DDCr channel is via Local Craft Terminal. Mass storage for the configuration database and SW loaded is provided by a replaceable PCMCIA Flash Card located in the Compact ADM unit. Compact ADM interfaces The Compact ADM unit provides direct access to 2 STM-1 interfaces on the unit front panel. This allows the realization of an unprotected ADM/Terminal Multiplexer configuration with a single board (excluding tributaries). The 2 STM-1 interfaces globally available in such a case may be used in any combination of unprotected (i.e. independent) and protected configurations (SNCP). Although physically located on the same unit that implements central functions (control, matrix,...) the Compact ADM STM-1 interfaces are totally equivalent to any other STM-1 interface available in the shelf.
