QoS in multiservice IP networks Vodafone-Italy s point of view Alberto Bona and Livio Pogliano Catania February, 3 rd 2005 Page 1
Vodafone s footprint Page 2
QoS categories for wireless applications increasing error tolerance conversational voice and video Telnet, interactive games voice messaging E-commerce, WWW browsing video and audio streaming FTP, still image, paging FAX arrival notification conversational (delay << 1sec) streaming (delay 1sec) interactive (delay < 10sec) background (delay > 10sec) increasing delay tolerance Page 3
Network analysis for QoS support Support of 3GPP QoSparameters & mechanisms in UE Support of different CS Internal delays in UE Memory [it affects TCP kbit/s] Used TCP window size Supported HTTP-version (1.0/1.1) Support of WAP-optimisation Protocol processing and trans mission delays, 3GPP QoSsupport A-bis and Gb resource dimensioning, topology/distances Internal processing/queuing delays. 3GPP QoS-support Packet core capacity Configuration of interactive queue weights HLR QoS-profiles More power at application layer Internal delays in WAPgateways/http-proxies/servers Application server capacity Geographical location [e.g. localised content caching vs. centralised servers] HTTP-version (1.0/1.1) supported Support of WAP-optimisation BSC SGSN IP/MPLS/IPoATM-backbone GGSN Internal radio access delays Interleaving/propagation delays Site locations Antenna directions/height/quality C/I ratio (Coding scheme support) TRX capacity (peak hour, CS load) BSS internal delays (e.g. late TBF release support) 3GPP QoS-support Queuing mechanisms support Network Controlled Cell Reselection Cell traffic load tresholds GPRS Dedicated resources Used packet scheduling criterias Usage of C parameters (C2, C31/C32) Configuration of scheduling step sizes Internal processing/queuing and L1 delays Memories/buffer sizes [TCP-effect] transmission/router capacity geographical locations/distance, number of hop = User Equipment & network node = application = network planning/dimensioning Application Servers (co-located or remote) Page 4
QoS management in Vodafone Italy network QoS is not used for commercial proposition differentiation but for network optimisation and control of services Radio and Core Network planning: 400 Gbytes traffic per day with 100 Mbit/s peak traffic dedicated resources for PS traffic over the whole network to be used in conjuction with shared ones overdimensioning is still used for lack of service awareness on radio scheduling UMTS deployment to support high Data Traffic usage and evolution of packet switched services service based priority allocation (WAP, WEB, Corporate) core network bandwidth reservation (MPLS) transport optimization over Wireless for TCP based services ad-hoc application optimizers (WEB, , etc) Page 5
Next steps service aware differentiation inside the same service category Live-TV, browsing and content downloading inside the same WAP connection service aware radio scheduling, prioritization and shaping technology trials completed business cases under development increasing the radio access bandwidth: Home Wireless DSL / HSDPA approach (increasing the bandwidth will create new services that will demand more bandwidth) information broadcasting mechanisms: new service opportunity while reducing network costs Page 6
