4 1. INTRODUCTION Overview This manual should be used in conjunction with the DEMUX User's Guide. It is assumed throughout that the user is familiar with the product operation. The DEMUX comprises of three circuit board modules. The DEM296 module handles all the signal processing and microprocessor control. The DEP196 module houses all the user controls and displays and is mounted inside the front panel. The RPSU296 module is the power supply. The mains input is internally selected between 110VAC and 230VAC. 6 2. CIRCUIT OPERATION Overview The DEM296 module provides all the signal processing and input-output. The block diagram shows the system interconnection. The main processor is an Arizona Microchip PIC17C44. It uses an on board serial port to receive DMX512. It generates all the control and data required to drive up to 72 channels of multiplexed sample and hold circuitry. Master Processor DMX512 is received by a RS485 receiver (IC2). The circuit is powered by a DC-DC converter (IC5) to provide galvanic isolation. The output of the receiver is routed to an opto-coupler (IC3) and then on to the serial input of the Master Processor. The Master Processor uses on board TTL inputs to read the three front panel BCD switches and thus decode the required start address. Connection to the front panel circuit board (DEP196) is via a 20 pin ribbon cable. Received DMX512 is buffered in internal memory and read out continuously to the Digital to Analogue Converter (IC6) via the data bus (A0-A3,AD4-AD7). The output of the DAC provides a continuous time division multiplexed data bus (Analogue Bus) which is used to charge the sample and hold circuits. The Analogue bus is driven by IC4 and can be selected to operate as either positive or negative. The full scale level of the Analogue Bus is 5V and can be calibrated by VR1. The remaining control signals generated by the Master Processor are address and chip selects which are used to switch on any one of the 72 sample and hold channels. The sample and hold circuits are detailed from sheet 4 of the main circuit diagram. Each output uses 1/4 of a TL084 amplifier to generate the output. The channel output is routed through a DIL package which is user configured as either Diode output protection or a 27K resistor for current mode output. Front Panel The front panel circuit only contains passive components. All signals are static, non-multiplexed and connect to the main processor via a 20 pin ribbon cable. Page 6

8 3. CIRCUIT CALIBRATION Output Options To adjust or calibrate the output of the Demux, use the following procedure: Disconnect the power cable from the rear of the unit. Remove the six pozi-drive screws which secure the lid. Remove the lid. Ensure that you are grounded before touching any internal components. You can achieve this by either wearing an antistatic wrist band or by touching an earthed metal surface at regular intervals. For 0 to +10V outputs Move the shorting link on J4 to the position shown. Fit diode packs (Part no: DEM-DPACK) to the nine sockets marked RPA1 to RPA9. Ensure that the diode packs are inserted in the orientation shown. For 0 to -10V outputs Move the shorting link on J4 to the position shown. Fit diode packs (Part no: DEM-DPACK) to the nine sockets marked RPA1 to RPA9. Ensure that the diode packs are inserted in the orientation shown. For 0 to + 370uA current outputs Move the shorting link on J4 to the position shown. Fit 27K resistor packs (Part no: DEM-RPACK-27K) to the nine sockets marked RPA1 to RPA9. The orientation is not important. In all modes the potentiometer may be used to fine tune the output voltage or current. Page 8
