37 Zone allocation according to ATEX Since , in the European trade area, only "equipment and protection systems for use in areas of explosion hazard" conforming to EG guideline 94/9/EG may be used. This guideline is based on Article 100a of the EC-Treaty. Because of this it is often described as "ATEX 100 (Atmosphere Explosible - explosive atmosphere). Gas atmosphere capable of explosion Zone allocation according DIN EN Dust/air mixtures capable of explosion, zone classification according to DIN EN Zone 0 Area in which there is always or often an atmosphere capable of explosion in the form of a mixture of air and inflammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist. Zone 1 Area in which it may be expected, that an atmosphere capable of explosion in the form of a mixture of air and inflammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist, can occur during normal operation. Zone 2 Area in which it may not be expected, that an atmosphere capable of explosion in the form of a mixture of air and inflammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist, can occur during normal operation, and if so, then only for a short time. Zone 20 Area in which an atmosphere capable of explosion, in the form of a cloud of inflammable dust is always or often present. Zone 21 Area in which it may be expected, that an atmosphere capable of explosion in the form of a cloud of inflammable dust in the air, can occasionally occur during normal operation. Zone 22 Area, in which in normal operation it is not expected that an atmosphere capable of explosion, in the form of a cloud of inflammable dust will occur. If, however, this does occur, then only for a short time. Classification of zones should only be made by people who have knowledge of inflammable materials, the process and the equipment. Zone allocation is a process for the analysis and classification of environments in which gaseous atmospheres or air/dust mixtures capable of explosion can occur. The allocation of the zones is carried out in accordance with the composition of the explosive materials (gas or dust) and the frequency of their occurrence. In this way, the choice of devices which can be operated in this environment can be made more easily. Explosion groups and temperature classes must be taken into consideration.
