7 K107USB INSTALLATION RULES This module has been designed for mounting on a DIN 4677 rail. Assembly in vertical position is recommended in order to increase the module's ventilation, and no raceways or other objects that compromise aeration must be positioned in the vicinity. Do not position the module above equipment that generates heat; we recommend positioning the module in the lower part of the control panel or container compartment. Inserting the module in the rail Removing the module from the rail 1) Attach the module in the upper part of the rail. ) Press the module downwards. 1) Apply leverage using a screwdriver (as shown in the figure). ) Rotate the module upwards. In case of long connections or noisy environments, it is advisable to use screened cables for the RS485 line (refer to Electrical Connections section). ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS S107USB ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS The following figure shows the electrical connections for S107USB module. 8 K107USB ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS The following figure shows the electrical connections for K107USB module. By inserting an external bridge between T1 and T terminals, the terminator of the RS485 line is inserted. In case of long connections or noisy environments, it is advisable to use screened cables for the RS485 line. Terminals Connections The module has been designed for spring-type terminal electrical connections. Proceed as follows to make the connections: 1 - Strip the cables by 0.8 mm - Insert a screwdriver in the square hole and press it until the cable lock spring opens. 3 - Insert the cable in the round hole. 4 - Remove the screwdriver and make sure that the cable is tightly fastened in the terminal. 10 PROBLEMS SOLVING For any problems with the converter, verify the following points: PROBLEM The POWER Led does not light The Rx Led is steady on The received data are not correct VERIFY Verify that the USB port of the PC provides the 5 V which are necessary to supply the module. Verify that the RS485 cables have not been swapped. Verify the communication speed. DRIVER INSTALLATION The CD containing the instrument s driver is provided to the user. In this section the installation procedure of the driver will be briefly described. It is necessary to specify that the installation in Linux (with Kernel.4.0 or later) environments is automatic and does not need the CD with the driver. The standard serial port of the PC which identifies the device is the following: /dev/ttyusb0. As regards Windows operating systems, it is important to underline that the procedure is divided into two phases which are both fundamental for the final use of the instrument. On the first phase, the driver of the out-and-out serial converter is installed. By the second phase instead the virtual driver will be installed: this will allow to use the peripheral as a standard serial port of the operating system. If case of use of Windows 000, these two phases are identical and are performed step by step: the user has only to follow the guided procedure; instead in Windows 1998 the second phase is automatically managed by the operating system without any further dialogue with the user. In Windows XP the two phases are performed very quickly by the operating system if it the CD with the drivers has been inserted. For the correct installation it is important to insert the CD with the driver and connect the device to the PC already turned on, so that the operating system may automatically detect the presence of the device. At this point the the user has only to follow the guided installation. VISUALIZATION OF THE VIRTUAL COM PORT At the end of the installation, it is possibile to view the name which has been assigned to the virtual serial port associated to the used S107USB or K107USB device. For example on the following Device Manager panel, it has been identified as COM7: MI Pagina 1 of

14 The RS485 serial interface is based on balanced line differential with a typical impedance of 10 Ohms. The maximum distance is not actually defined as it depends on the speed of communication, the signal to noise ration and the quality of cable used. Generally, 100m is taken to be the maximum distance that reliable communication can be guaranteed. For distances of up to a few meters in a low noise environment, almost any cable can be used. For cable lengths up to about 100m almost any screened twisted pair cable will suffice. Above this, the use cables that meet the RS485 standard such as CEAM CPR 6003 or BELDEN The recommended cabling is layout is daisy chain although short spurs up to about m can be tolerated. The star topology is not recommended and should be avoided. The communications line should be terminated by switching the line termination dip switch ON (if using the Seneca Z-PC line modules) on the last module, or by putting a 10Ohm resistor across the two lines at the end of the cable. The screen should be connected to the GND terminals where they are available and the screen should also be connected to Earth in at least 1 place, via a 10 nf capacitor if necessary Master Recommended Master < m OK 1 3 Master NOT Recommended 1 RS3 Connections: Pin Function RXD 3 TXD 5 GND 7 RTS RS485 Connections Pin Function 1 B(-) RS485 (HALF D or Tx in FULL D.) Check that RS3/RS485 cables are not crossed. DRIVER INSTALLATION In the box containing the instrument, the user will find the CD containing the drivers. In this section the installation driver procedure will be described carefully under Windows. Under Linux, (with.4.0 Kernel or later) the installation is automatic and doesn't need the CD driver. The serial port under which the instrument is identified is: /dev/ttyusb0. For Windows OS, the installation procedure is made of two parts. In the first, the serial converter driver will be installed. In the second part the virtual driver will be installed, and the peripheral will be able to be used by the operating system as a standard serial port. In the case you are using Windows 000, Windows XP or Windows Vista, these two parts are identical and are now described step by step, while in Windows 1998 the second part will be managed automatically by the operating system, without any other communication to the user. In the following section the installation procedure for Windows XP will be described. DRIVER INSTALLATION IN WINDOWS XP First, connect the instrument to the PC turned on, in this way the operating system can detect the instrument automatically. SERIAL INTERFACE The RS485 serial interface is based on balanced line differential with a typical impedance of 10 Ohms. For cable lengths up to about 100m almost any screened twisted pair cable will suffice.above this, the use cables that meet the RS485 standard such as CEAM CPR 6003 or BELDEN The recommended cabling is layout is daisy chain although short spurs up to about m can be tolerated. The star topology is not recommended and should be avoided. The communications line should be terminated by switching the line termination dip switch ON (if using the Seneca Z-PC line modules) on the last module, or by putting a 10Ohm resistor across the two lines at the end of the cable. The screen should be connected to the GND terminals where they are available and the screen should also be connected to Earth in at least 1 place, via a 10 nf capacitor if necessary.
