4 Astribank Getting Started 1 System Overview Astribank is the first channel bank that was specifically designed for the Asterisk IP-PBX. Astribank supports FXS ports (analog telephones), optional FXO ports (analog lines), 2 auxiliary output ports and 4 auxiliary input ports. The USB 2.0 interface permits thousands of concurrent telephony calls many more than the capability of the computer s CPU. The input/output ports allows you to associate external devices with your Asterisk dialing plan. Examples of external devices include gates, alarm systems, public address systems, etc. For detailed information, see The high-quality telephony interface is designed to support different international standards. Several units can be connected to the Asterisk PC (via the PC s built-in USB ports or by using an external USB hub) thereby supporting additional telephone lines. When Xorcom Rapid is used, Astribank is installed by simply clicking a new item. Those who prefer to build their own package can use the source code of the USB driver. The Astribank channels appear as ordinary Zaptel channels in Asterisk configuration. As well, a simple click is all that is required to install Astribank onto the Xorcom TS-1. Xorcom Rapid Overview Xorcom Rapid is a Debian/Asterisk distribution program that includes an auto-install and special auto-configuration features. It quickly and effortlessly converts any PC into an Asterisk PBX. Xorcom Rapid includes a modified FreePBX WEB interface, Flash Operator Panel, auto-configuration tools and other packages that are necessary for optimal Asterisk operation. Xorcom Rapid is designed to work with the Astribank such that once the Astribank is connected to the host, the Astribank is recognized as a set of Zaptel channels. Astribank needs a special USB driver to communicate with the Zaptel driver in the PC. Starting with version 1.2.4, the Astribank driver is part of the official Zaptel driver. The Astribank driver is also built into the Xorcom Rapid distribution that is included on the utility CD. Xorcom Rapid will recognize the Astribank, will initiate, and will apply the default configuration described in Table 1 on page 2. NOTE: We recommend that you check for the latest version of Xorcom Rapid and the latest drivers. If your host is connected to the Internet, the Xorcom Rapid Setup program will automatically check for the latest Xorcom Rapid edition.

7 Astribank Getting Started 4 Package Contents Please ensure that, in addition to the Astribank box, the package also contains the following: external power supply power cord USB cable CD-ROM that includes two utilities: Windows based Astribank Test Utility (ATU) Xorcom Rapid distribution grounding tab System Requirements You may install the Asterisk server on different PCs, starting from Pentium 2 units up to top of the line multiple CPU computers. The computer should be tested to determine if it can perform the tasks you want it to perform. We recommend that you run the load tests described in our web These tests were done for the TS-1 server but they will, nevertheless, give you a guideline. Power Supply and Grounding The Astribank uses 110V/220V desktop power. Make sure to place the power supply unit and the Astribank box in the open air. WARNING! Never cover the power supply unit or the Astribank box. WARNING! Never use a power supply unit that was not supplied with the Astribank-8 box. Connecting other power supply units may damage the Astribank permanently and void warranty. The Astribank is supplied with a grounding tab. For safety reasons, if the lines wiring exits the building, it is essential to use the grounding tab. Connect the grounding tab to the grounding screw on the rear panel. Then, using12-16 gauge wire, connect the grounding tab to a reliable ground. IMPORTANT! Ensure that the host supports USB 2.0. Figure 1: Grounding Tab

8 Astribank Getting Started 5 Astribank Test Utility (ATU) The Astribank is supplied with a Windows based test utility called the ATU. Use the ATU to check the Astribank operation even before you connect it to the Asterisk IP- PBX. Subsequently, you can also test your Astribank without an Asterisk IP-PBX. In addition, we strongly recommend that, whenever you suspect a problem with Astribank, use the ATU to differentiate Asterisk software configuration problems from hardware problems. NOTE: For Astribank 16,24, and 32 units, the ATU will test only the first 8 FXS ports. To install and run the ATU: 1. Obtain a computer with the following system requirements: Windows XP operating system a USB 2.0 port.net version 1.1 or higher NOTE: If your computer does not have.net version 1.1, the Setup program will direct you to the web site from which you can download it. 2. Ensure that the Astribank is not connected to the computer. 3. Insert the utility CD-ROM (supplied with the Astribank) into the computer s CD-ROM drive. 4. Install the Astribank Test Utility (ATU.exe). When installation is complete, the following icon will appear on the desktop: 5. Connect the power supply, first to the Astribank, and then to the main. A green On light on the left side of the panel will light up. 6. Connect the Astribank to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The computer will display the standard Windows message indicating the connection of a new USB device. 7. Click the desktop icon to run the ATU. Alternately, run the ATU by selecting the program from the program list. You might receive a warning indicating that the driver is not digitally signed. Click Continue. The ATU activation screen with a blinking message Initializing will be displayed. The buttons will be disabled. After a few seconds, the ATU will display the message "Astribank is active. 8 FXS ports". At the same time, the "Sync" light on the Astribank panel and the yellow H/W OK light will start blinking.

9 Astribank Getting Started With more than one analog telephone you can perform a Voice Routing test. a. Click Voice Test. The Routing Channels screen is displayed. 8. Click Light Test. The red and green lights on the RJ11 telephone jacks will begin flashing, starting with port 1 and finishing with port 8. Then, all the lights will turn on and off three times. NOTE: The H/W OK light should be on or blinking. 9. Connect at least one analog telephone set to an Astribank port numbered between 1 and Click Ring All. The telephone(s) will start to ring and the green LED will blink. b. Specify two telephones. c. Click Start Route. The Voice Test will issue a voice channel between those two telephones. However, the phones will not ring. NOTE: When the Astribank is connected to the Asterisk IP-PBX, voice quality is excellent. However, for technical reasons, voice quality during this test is low. Do not be concerned.

10 Astribank Getting Started 7 d. Pick up the specified phones and verify that there is an active voice channel between them. NOTE: Whenever there is telephony activity through the Astribank (such as active call, off-hook, dialing or ring, etc.) the "Active" light on the Astribank panel will be lit. LED s The front panel includes several LED s. They function as follows: After connecting the power: A red "On" light indicates the unit is powered. A yellow "H/W OK" light indicates proper operation of the internal circuitry. This light turns on only after the Astribank has been synchronized with the Asterisk host. Then, the Astribank is ready to communicate with the Asterisk server or with the Astribank Test Utility. Two additional LED s provide run-time indications: A green "Sync" light indicates that the Astribank is synchronized with the host computer (Asterisk or the ATU). When synchronized, the Sync light will blink. A green "Active" light indicates that the Astribank has at least one active call. Active calls include incoming or outgoing phone calls, off-hook status, or ring status for one of the ports.

11 Astribank Getting Started 8 Setting up Astribank After completing the tests performed with the ATU, set up your Astribank. 1. Connect the external power supply unit to the Astribank-8 rear-panel power jack. 2. Connect the power cord to the power supply unit. 3. Connect the cable to 110 or 220 volt supply. The On light will turn on. WARNING! The Xorcom Rapid installer wipes out the current content of the PC s hard disk. 4. Ensure that Xorcom Rapid, or another Asterisk program with Astribank drivers, is installed on the computer that is dedicated to function as the PBX. For background information on Xorcom Rapid, see p. 1. For Xorcom Rapid installation instructions, see Install Xorcom Rapid from either the installation available on the CD-ROM or download the latest version from the web site. NOTE: We recommend that you check for the latest version of Xorcom Rapid. If your host is connected to the Internet, the Xorcom Rapid Setup program will automatically check for the latest Xorcom Rapid edition. If you are not interested in using Xorcom Rapid, you can use the driver supplied in the utility CD to compile it into your preferred Asterisk build. Note that the drivers will work only with Linux kernel version 2.6.x Driver Source Code is available at 5. Ensure that the latest Astribank drivers are installed. Starting with version 1.2.4, the Astribank drivers are included as part of the official Zaptel driver. However, these as well as drivers installed with an earlier version of Xorcom Rapid may be outdated. Check the web site. 6. Connect the Astribank to your Asterisk server s USB port. NOTE: Astribank is supported by Zaptel versions and up. If you are using an older Zaptel version, the Astribank driver may be compiled from the utility CD supplied with the product. 7. Start the Asterisk server. While Linux is booting up and only if you are using Xorcom Rapid the Astribank will automatically be recognized. 8. From the Xorcom Rapid program group, select Zaptel Auto-configuration. The auto-configuration program runs. When finished, the main menu is displayed and a dial-tone is available on all Astribank ports.

12 Astribank Getting Started 9 Information about FXO Ports Astribank 16, 24 and 32 may be purchased with a block of FXO ports. Astribank 32 can support up to 24 FXO ports. FXO ports are used to access the PSTN or to access PBX extensions. Note: When connecting the Astribank to PSTN lines, make sure that the lines are protected. Use standard lightning protection devices such as gas discharge units or similar solid state, highenergy protection devices. When using the Xorcom Rapid default configuration (see Xorcom Rapid Overview on page 1) dialing "9" will connect a call to the first FXO line. The Xorcom Rapid default configuration will also route any incoming call to the IVR (Interactive Voice Response). You can change the incoming call routing from the web interface s "Incoming Calls" screen. If you are not using the web interface, use the Asterisk dial plan to set the FXO lines. FXO Tune To optimize FXO operation use the FXO Tune program. FXO Tune is supplied on the CD-ROM and can also be downloaded from web site. FXO Tune reduces the echo that is generated in any digital to analog telephony connection and thereby improves the voice quality. WARNING! When connecting the Astribank to PSTN lines, ensure that the grounding tab is properly affixed. See Power Supply and Grounding on page 4. To run FXO Tune: 1. Ensure that the grounding tab is properly affixed. See Power Supply and Grounding on page Ensure that all the FXO lines are connected to the FXO connectors. NOTE: If you switch connections, you must rerun FXO Tune. 3. There are two ways to initiate FXO Tune: From the Linux command line, run fxotune-i 4. Note that the number 4 can be replaced with any number that stops the dial tone.

13 Astribank Getting Started 10 Using Xorcom Rapid : i. Open the Xorcom Rapid main menu. ii. Select Astribank. iii. Select Astribank and Zaptel. iv. Select FXO Tune. A confirmation message is displayed. Adding Astribank to a TS 1 Xorcom TS 1 is an Asterisk based PBX that provides maximum performance and reliability. It is 100% solid state and contains no moving parts. It includes a browser-based configuration and maintenance program and a Flash Operator Panel for PBX normal operation. To add an Astribank to the TS 1: 1. Connect the power to the Astribank. 2. Connect the USB cable from the TS-1 to the Astribank. 3. Log-in to the web interface. The Welcome screen is displayed.

14 Astribank Getting Started From the left-pane navigation bar, click Zaptel Configuration. 5. Click Continue. 6. At the end of the process, to save and apply the new configuration, click the red bar at the top of the screen. Troubleshooting No lights on the Astribank panel Check if the power supply unit is connected to a 110 or a 220 volt power supply. Check if the power supply output is plugged firmly into the power jack on the Astribank rear panel. Check for power on the power outlet. Check for 12 VDC on the power supply output cable. No power indicates a faulty power supply. Otherwise the Astribank itself may be faulty. "On" light is on, but there is no "H/W OK" light Check if Astribank is synchronized with the Asterisk server or with the ATU. "Sync" light is blinking, but there is no "H/W OK" light This may indicate a hardware failure in the Astribank. Contact us. "H/W OK" light is on but "Sync" light does not blink Check if the module xpp_usb is loaded. Check the Astribank driver. It might not be installed correctly. Check the Astribank using the ATU. See Astribank Test Utility (ATU) on page 5.

15 Astribank Getting Started 12 The telephone sets that are connected to the Astribank are dead. The green indicator light beside the active port (when the telephone is off-hook or ringing) should be illuminated. If, when you pick up the phone, there is no green light then check the Asterisk configuration. Check the Astribank using the ATU. See Astribank Test Utility (ATU) on page 5.
