Safety Information Note: If the equipment is not used in the manner This section acquaints you with the advisory and identification labels on the instrument specified and the by Beta safety features incorporated into the design of the instrument. LaserMike, the protection provided The following figure shows the advisory and identification labels on the Length Indicator. by the equipment may be impaired. Safety Information Introduction The DataPro 500 works in conjunction with LaserSpeed model 4000/8000/9000 speed and length sensors to measure and display the accumulated length and speed of a product. The length is computed by counting pulses that are transmitted by the LaserSpeed. The indicator has a front panel LED that can be configured, along with the LaserSpeed, to indicate status information. Part No. MAN/EN Page 6 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Installation Installation The DataPro 500 is self-contained, and is designed to sit on top of a table or bench in a control room or area protected from mist and spray, excessive dirt, and harsh environments. The DataPro 500 should be positioned so that the front panel key switch and display controls can be operated, and so the display is easily visible. The power switch for the Data Pro 500 is located on the rear panel next to the power cord inlet. The unit should be positioned so that the power switch is easily accessible. Instructions for Protective Earthing/Grounding The DataPro 500 is connected to Earth ground via the Earth ground conductor in the power cord. If this cord is damaged in any way it should be replaced immediately with a similar power cord. The power cord s protective earth terminal should not be removed. Removing the protective earth terminal may result in electrical shock. The DataPro 500 must be plugged into an appropriate wall outlet equipped with a protective earth conductor terminal. Connections to the Supply The DataPro 500 is connected to mains supply via the supplied power cord, or with a compatible power cord. Ventilation Requirements The DataPro 500 has an internal power supply and needs to be positioned so that air can circulate around the enclosure to allow heat to dissipate. Maximum Sound Level The DataPro 500 emits less than 85db SPL, so hearing protection is not required. Part No. MAN/EN Page 7 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Installation LaserSafety The DataPro 500 is accessory equipment for Beta LaserMike LaserSpeed Speed and Length sensors. Precautions should be taken when using these sensors to ensure that eye damage does not occur. Details about what precautions are required are located in the LaserSpeed sensor s instruction handbook. For safety, The DataPro 500 has a safety interlock key switch located on the front panel. This key switch must be turned to the On or I position for the laser to operate. There is also an additional interlock located on a rear panel connector. These safety interlocks should not be tampered with or removed. Modifying the DataPro 500 in a manner not specified by Beta LaserMike may impair the protection provided by the equipment, and will void the factory warranty. Part No. MAN/EN Page 8 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Equipment Interconnections Equipment Interconnections LaserSpeed 25 pin D-type connector for powering the connected LaserSpeed and interfacing the internal indicator to the LaserSpeed pulse outputs LaserSpeed Signal Pass Thru 25 pin D-type connector that has most of the LaserSpeed signals passed thru. For the LS8000/9000 models, the high speed differential outputs are passed thru as scaled voltages. This allows external equipment, such as other counters, PLCs or printers to be connected to the second output. Important Note: 24v is also passed thru so no other source of current should be connected to the 24v pins on the pass thru connector (pins 24 and 25). LaserSpeed RS232 Connection 9 pin D-type connector that allows an external device, usually a PC, to connect directly to the gauge over RS232. This is most commonly used by PCs running LaserTrak so the gauge can be configured. See the LaserSpeed handbook for a complete description of the commands Indicator RS232 Not available at this time. Alarms There are two NO/NC relay outputs that are triggered based on two setpoint values. These are typically used to trigger ramp down and change reel/roll. See the Specifications section for output pin definitions. Part No. MAN/EN Page 9 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Operation Operation Key Switch The DataPro 500 front panel key switch provides laser power and beam shutter interlock protection. Neither the LaserSpeed s laser nor the beam shutter will be activated unless this key is turned to the I position. The key switch on the DataPro 500 is connected in parallel with the remote interlock contacts on the pass thru port, so when using remote contacts to control the shutter and laser interlock signals, leave the key switch on the DataPro 500 in the 0 position. PAR This puts the display in programming mode and allows access to the configurable parameters. The unit can be configured to restrict access to certain parameters for use by line operators. SEL In the normal run mode, the SEL key toggles between length and rate display. In programming mode, the SEL key toggles through configurable items as well as incrementing the digits of programmed values RST In normal run mode, the RST key will reset the count display. In programming mode, the RST key increments the programmed values Part No. MAN/EN Page 10 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Operation Part No. MAN/EN Page 11 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Operation Programmable Indicator You can easily configure the DP500 via the pushbuttons on the front panel. Depending on the application, the DP500 is configured with different settings. This section describes the general operation of the indicator and how to change settings. Key Parameters There are parameters that are normally accessed by the process engineer to configure the counter and those that are entered by the operator. Typically the operator will not have access to the configuration apart from setpoints. As part of the configuration, all configurable items can be locked out leaving just the setpoint values accessible by the operator. See the Code section below for instructions on locking out parameters. Parameter Programming and Examples The below parameters are to be used by process engineers who configure the counter once for use by line operators. See the section Code below on instructions for locking out the configurable parameters. Length By default, the DP500 is configured for 100 pulses per unit length. This means the connected LaserSpeed needs to be configured to provide 100 pulses per unit length. The DP500 does not have units so whether the LaserSpeed is configured for metric or imperial units of measure, the DP500 will count accurately. There may be instances where the DP500 needs to be set to a higher or lower resolution or the connected LaserSpeed may not be set to the defaults of the DP500. The scaling factor is dependent on pulses per unit length from the gauge and the number of decimals to the right of the decimal. The key parameters are: InP - Ab is always set to quad 1 (quadrature x1) A dpt indicates the decimal position, where: A - ScF indicates the scaling factor, where: Scaling Factor = Desired decimal position Number of pulses per unit length Part No. MAN/EN Page 12 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Operation For example: We want to have tenths (0.0) on the display and the LaserSpeed is set to 100 pulses per unit length (metric or imperial) Scaling Factor = 10/100 = 0.1 So 0.1 would be entered for A ScF. Another example: We want to have one hundredths (0.00) displayed, and the LaserSpeed is set to 500 pulses per unit length Scaling Factor = 100/500 = 0.2 So 0.2 would be entered for A ScF. Rate Unlike length, the rate formula is not dependent on the decimal point position; the key parameters are rt-enb, rt-dpt, StYLE rt-dsp and rt-inp. rt-enb - must be set to yes to enable rate display. rt-dpt - The desired decimal position StyLE This parameter should be set to KEY rt-dsp - Typically 60 (number of seconds to display the rate information) rt-inp - Pulses per unit length. The default is 100. Setpoints You can set up to two setpoints that can be triggered or reset on various conditions. The most common is to have setpoint 1 trigger at a certain length (i.e. near the end of a roll/reel) and setpoint 2 trigger at another length (i.e. at the end of a roll/reel). To set the setpoint up, go to module 4 of the configuration menu. Part No. MAN/EN Page 13 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)

Operation Key Parameters SP-SEL should be set to 1 or 2 depending on which setpoint is being configured. Enb-n = yes ASN = Cnt A ACT-n = LAtCH SPt-n = The desired setpoint value. Code A code can be entered to lockout users so that the programmed values can t be accidentally changed. The code can also be set to allow a subset of the parameters to be changed without entering the access code. For example, if you want the operator to be able to change setpoint values but nothing else. For setting a code to limit access to only the setpoints: Key Parameters CodE = The access code. Three digit codes ( ) lock out all parameters. Two digit codes (01-99) lockout all parameters other than those setup for quick programming. Once a two digit code is entered (if setpoints are enabled), two more parameters appear in this list, SP-1 and SP-2. Setting these to Yes will allow access to the setpoints (and only the setpoints) when the PAR key is pressed. Note: after the setpoints are set, the Code prompt will appear. When the correct access code is entered (i.e. by the process engineer), the full list of programmable parameters becomes accessible. However, if the PAR key is pressed (i.e. by the operator) the program mode will be cancelled and the display will revert back to the length or rate display. If the access code is ever forgotten, 222 will always allow the process engineer access to all parameters and a new access code can be entered. Part No. MAN/EN Page 14 of 32 Revision C (Jun 2010)
