13 Transformer Life Transformer life expectancy is determined by the rate of degradation of the cellulose insulation. After processing, the Degree of Polymerisation (DP) is typically 950+ (thermally upgraded paper), 850+ (non). Temperature is the main contributor to insulation consumption. Moisture is the second major contributor.

15 Transformer Temperatures Temperatures are the basic data required for:- Ageing / insulation consumption, Load-ability (Dynamic Rating of transformer), Cooling control. IEC section states temperature rises of 60 / 65 / 78 0 C, representing Top Oil / Average Winding / Hot Spot rises. Hot Spot, Ambient & gradients = most critical temperature data for transformer management.
