2 Before You Start Check Contents Check all the box contents and make a note of any signs of damage. What s in the box? You should have : 1 Mouse 1 Monitor 1 Keyboard 1 Personal Computer (PC) 2 Power Cables CAMARA Computer Guide - Setup - Before You Start 3

3 Unpacking Unpack Contents Make sure the box is the right way up and unpack the power cables, keyboard, mouse and monitor. (Figure 1) Figure 1 Take extra care when removing the monitor, as it contains glass and may be heavy. Two people should lift the monitor. (Figure 2) Figure 2 Remove the personal computer and stand it on its rubber feet. The placing of rubber feet determines whether the PC stands vertically (Tower) or horizontally (Desktop). 4 Assembly: 1 Monitor Connection Insert the monitor plug into the matching socket on the computer. Gently push in all the way, then gently tighten both handscrews until the connector is firmly attached. (Figure 4) MONITOR COMPUTER Figure 4 NOTE: The connector can insert only one way! 5 Assembly: 2 Keyboard Connection Insert the keyboard plug into the purple or orange coloured socket on the computer. Align the pins and push gently in all the way. (Figure 5) Figure 5 NOTE: The connector can insert only one way! DO NOT FORCE IT IN! CAMARA Computer Guide - Setup - Assembly: 2 6

6 Assembly: 3 Mouse Connection Insert the mouse plug into the small blue round socket on the computer. Align the pins and push gently in all the way. (Figure 6) Figure 6 NOTE: The connector can insert only one way! DO NOT FORCE IT IN! CAMARA Computer Guide - Setup -Assembly: 3 7

7 Assembly: 4 Power Supply Connection Insert the power plug into the correct socket on the computer. Push gently in all the way. (Figure 7) Do not switch on the computer yet. Read the CAUTION below on electrical surge protection. Power Connection Computer Surge Protector Figure 7! CAUTION CAUTION! 8 Power Problems Power Surges/Spikes These are very short surges in voltage and they will break your computer and monitor if you do not have a surge protector installed. Voltage Sags and Brownouts Surge Protector Low supply voltage may be imposed to share out power when generating capacity is limited. This is not sufficient for the reliable operation of computers, which should be turned out during these periods. NOTE: Surge Protectors must be used on all computers AND monitors! 9 Switch On: 1 Before you switch on for the first time, make sure you have completed the following steps: 1. Connected monitor, mouse and keyboard to the PC 2. Power cable is plugged into computer and monitor. 3. Power cable is connected to a suitable Surge Protector! NOTE: Using a Surge Protector is essential for the safe operation of the computer! 10 Switch On: 2 Power on Press the power button on your computer to turn it on. This is usually located on the front of the computer. Some monitors have their own power. If so, make sure to turn this on BEFORE you switch on. (Figure 8) Power Button POWER MONITOR COMPUTER Figure 8 NOTE: Sometimes there is also a security power switch on the back or side of the computer. 11 Edubuntu Linux: Login Login After turning on your computer a login screen will appear. (Figure 9) Figure 9 To Login: Type in the username camara followed by the ENTER key. 12 Logout / Shutdown Logout When you have finished working on your system, you must logout. Logging out will tell the computer that you no longer want to use it. Any open files or applications will be closed. To Logout: Select the Systems menu from the panel and then Logout. 13 System Shutdown Shut Down When you have finished using the computer and want to power it off, you will have to perform a system shutdown. To Shutdown: At the Main Menu, perform a logout. Then at the login screen select the Shut down option at the bottom of the screen. (Figure 12) Click the OK button. Figure 12! CAUTION CAUTION! It is very important that you shutdown your computer properly using the Shutdown option. If you switch off your computer or plug it out without shutting down properly, your computer will break.
