1 Legal Regulations Safety instructions These instructions are part of the device. They contain text and illustrations for the correct handling of the module and must be read before installation or use. Adhere to the information in the documentation. Non-observance of the instructions, operation, which is not in accordance with use as prescribed below incorrect installation or handling, can affect the safety of people and equipment. The device must be installed, connected and put into operation by a qualified electrician. Disconnect the device externally before handling it. Also, disconnect any independently supplied output load circuits. As no components to be maintained by the user are contained in the device, the housing must not be opened. The device can only be repaired by the manufacturer. The device must be disposed of in accordance with the national environmental regulations. In case of malfunction of the device or uncertainties, please contact the manufacturer. Tampering with the device can seriously affect the safety of people and equipment. This is not permitted and leads to an exclusion of liability and warranty. This Product is intended to be supplied by a listed Power Unit. Marked "Class 2" and rated voltage 9-36VDC, current 610mA. For EMC reasons power supply cables must not be longer than 10 meters. The device is designed to be used in systems for industry and small business area. The integrator is responsible to check and comply with additional and different regional directives and requirements if this device is used in other areas RM Michaelides Software & Elektronik GmbH Donaustraße 14 D Fulda Germany cv_hw_e.doc 3
2 About the CANview CANview is designed to connect a CAN-Bus system to a PC or embedded system via the RS232 interface. It is equipped with a powerful 8 - bit microcontroller with an integrated full-can-interface and a flash memory that can be programmed from within the system. This enables the implementation of specific CAN and RS232 protocols or additional functions. CANview is powered either from an external power supply or from the CAN interface. It can be used in two different operating modes, which can be selected in the device configuration program 'RM CAN-Device Configurator': Transparent Mode Sensor Mode When the device is configured to operate in 'Transparent Mode', it can be accessed with the commands described in the 'Command Manual'. They are compatible with the instruction set of other RM devices like CANview USB, CANgateway USB and CANview Bluetooth. This allows to replace CANview with these RM tools easily. In this mode, CANview can be used as CAN to PC interface for the 'RM CAN-Device Monitor' software for receiving and sending CAN messages. In 'Sensor Mode', all CAN data bytes received with a preconfigured ID are extracted from this message and sent to the RS232 interface. In the other direction received data is packed into a CAN message with preconfigured ID and sent, as soon as eight data bytes are received or a time-out occurred. This mode is useful if non-can devices with RS232 interface should transmit data via the CAN bus. CANview provides a buffer to store up to 256 CAN messages. Apart from the active mode CANview also supports a CAN passive mode in which the device just listens to the CAN Bus with the transmission line completely disabled. Another feature is the automatic baud rate detection. For further information about the 'RM CAN-Device Monitor' and the 'RM CAN- Device Configurator', please see their respective documentation. Also, consult the 'Command Manual' for a description of the commands, supported by the CANview. For further information and support see our web page: - Support or contact us via mailto:info@rmcan.com RM Michaelides Software & Elektronik GmbH Donaustraße 14 D Fulda Germany cv_hw_e.doc
3 Important Information for using CANview Hardware Manual RM CANview Observe the information of the description. Non-observance of the notes, operation that is not in accordance with use as prescribed below, wrong installation or handling can result in serious harm concerning the safety of people and plant. The device is designed to be used in systems for industry and small business area. The integrator is responsible to check and comply with additional and different regional directives and requirements if this device is used in other areas. It must only be installed, connected and commissioned by qualified personnel. Disconnect the device externally before doing any work on it. If necessary, also disconnect separately supplied output load circuits. In the case of malfunctions or uncertainties, please contact the manufacturer. Tampering with the device can lead to considerable risks for the safety of people and plant. It is not permitted and leads to an exclusion of any liability and warranty claims. Operation The device must not be operated in machines and applications where life depends on the proper operation of this piece of equipment. Due to specifications, the CAN interface as well as the RS232 interface are using the same connector type Powering up the CANview with swapped connectors may destroy the CANview as well as other connected devices! Power Supply For EMC reasons power supply cables must not be longer than 10 meters. Never connect a power supply with reversed polarity to the CANview! Never connect an external power supply if the device is powered via CAN! These actions will destroy the device! The pin assignment of the power supply connector can be found in the chapter 'Power supply' on page 9' This Product is intended to be supplied by a listed Power Unit. Marked "Class 2" and rated voltage 9-36VDC, current 610mA RM Michaelides Software & Elektronik GmbH Donaustraße 14 D Fulda Germany cv_hw_e.doc 5
CAN The RS232 connector is galvanically isolated against the CAN interface, the power supply and the rest of the device. Because of this, the shielding should only be applied by the RS232 interface. Otherwise, the galvanic isolation will be suspended. The signals on the CAN connection terminals CAN-Low and CAN-High must match the signals on the CAN-terminals of the connected devices. For CAN baud rates, the following guidelines can be used to estimate the maximum length of the bus-line: CAN Baud Rate 1Mbit/s Max. bus length 25m 800 kbit/s 50m 500 kbit/s 100m 250 kbit/s 250m 125kbit/s 50kbit/s 500m 1000m 4 Disposal Observe your national laws when disposing the device and its package. 5 Getting Started First, connect the RS232 port of the device to the PC Due to specifications, the CAN interface as well as the RS232 interface are using the same connector type Powering up the CANview with swapped connectors may destroy the CANview as well as other connected devices! Then connect the device to your CAN bus system. If the device is not powered from the CAN bus, also connect the power supply RM Michaelides Software & Elektronik GmbH Donaustraße 14 D Fulda Germany cv_hw_e.doc
Never connect a power supply with reversed polarity to the CANview! This will destroy the device! You can find the pin assignment of the power supply connector in the chapter 'Power supply' on page '9'. Start the 'RM CAN-Device Configurator' to configure the device according to your requirements. After that you can either connect the device to the COM port of your external system to use CANview as simple CAN interface or start the 'RM CAN-Device Monitor' at your PC to send and receive CAN messages. For further information about the 'RM CAN-Device Monitor' and the 'RM CAN- Device Configurator', please see their respective documentation. 6 Connectors The CANview is equipped with the following connectors: The 9-pin Male D-Sub Connector is used to interface the CAN Bus with the CANview and to power the device from the bus. If no power is supplied from the CAN bus, the device has to be powered from an external power supply. Never connect a power supply with reversed polarity to the CANview! Never connect an external power supply if the device is powered via CAN! These actions will destroy the device! RM Michaelides Software & Elektronik GmbH Donaustraße 14 D Fulda Germany cv_hw_e.doc 7
The RS232 connector is used to exchange CAN data with other RS232 devices or a PC. Due to specifications, the CAN interface as well as the RS232 interface are using the same connector type. Powering up the CANview with swapped connectors may destroy the CANview as well as other connected devices! 6.1 CAN Below, the male Sub-D 9 CAN connector of CANview is described. The location of the different pins is shown as looking directly at the plug of the device. The shielding of the CAN cable should not be applied to the shell of the connector. Otherwise, the galvanic isolation will be suspended.
