1 DPS Telecom Operation Guide "Your Partners In Telecom Management Networks" Alarm Distribution Shelf (ADS) Overview The ADS permits building and facility owners to collect and distribute alarms to their tenants. This solution effectively isolates the individual alarms systems allowing potentially non-compatible systems to co-exist. It also features the ability to select which alarms points get forwarded as well as the capability to perform logical functions that can summarize and filter alarm data. The ADS monitors up to 56 ground closures and can distribute those alarms to up to 0 users, each receiving 6 points. Additionally, a copy of the entire source alarms is provided for the facility owner so then can keep track of the site in its entirety. This solution is modular in nature consisting of SMATs (-point alarm input cards) and AOCs ( relay output cards). Cards can be added to pre-designated position in the shelf as additional input or output capacity is required. Up to two shelves can be cascaded together for high density applications. The ADS is housed in the slot 460 shelf for rack mounting. T/ADS, a Windows configuration utility, is provided to compile the mapping rules and to download them to the shelf. Applications The ADS is fully configurable and can be used in a one or two shelf application. The single shelf configuration supports 8 ground closure alarm inputs. These 8 source alarms are repeated to 8 AOC relay outputs to two KDAs. Five more AOC cards provide 60 Fig. - Alarm Distribution Shelf, front view relay closures whose function is determined by simple Boolean logic equations through the T/ADS software. These AOC outputs are routed to USERs -0. A single shelf application is pictured in Fig.. For a two shelf application, an additional 8 alarm inputs are provided, bringing the total input alarms to 56. The same configuration is maintained, with the SMATS occupying the 4 leftmost slots of each shelf, and the AOC cards the remaining 9 slots. Unpack the ADS and all accessories. (Verify contents with the shipping list on page 8). Rack mount the ADS shelf.. Complete back panel connections. (See hardware connections section) 4. Power down shelf by removing the Fuse Module. 5. Plug in SMATs and AOCs. 6. Re-install insert the fuse module. 7. Configure the ADS with a PC connected to the CONFIG port using T/ADS for Windows. (See software configuration section) 8. Verify operation. Back Panel Connections. Observe industry safety procedures when connecting power feeds to the ADS shelf. Never connect live power to the shelf.. If alarms are to be forwarded to a KDA, connect male to male Amphenol cables (DPS part number D-PR-96-0A-0X) with pin numbers wired straight across, pin to pin, from the KDA OUTPUTS of the ADS to the appropriate KDA inputs J9, J0. Note: Proper operations of the last 8 points requires the -OB version of the KDA with negatively biased alarm inputs.. The Fuse Alarm strip is connected to a relay in the Fuse Module that will latch if any fuse blows in the shelf. 4. Connect source alarms to the SOURCE input connectors using male Amphenol Cables (See Table A for pinout.) 5. Connect AOC relay outputs User -0 using male DB5 cables to the appropriate equipment. (See Table B for pinout.) Each user should provide their own reference source they wish to see on the alarm outputs when an alarm is declared. In most cases this is Ground, but it could be other values things as +5V and BAT. Should a user require more than 6 alarm outputs, simply assign additional DB5 connectors (6 points each) as needed. 6. If installing a two shelf application, connect the Primary Shelf to the Secondary Shelf with a female to female DB9 cable plugged into each shelf s CHAIN connector. (Shelf Identification is indicated on the back panel, bottom right ) Card Installation. Insert the Fuse Module, with all fuses removed, into the slot furthest to the right.. Insert SMATs, as required by your capacity requirements starting from slot (left most slot when viewed from the front) up to a maxim of four cards total. At least one SMAT must be included in every configuration.. If KDA s are to be used for local alarm collection, insert AOCs that output to the KDAs in the next four slots (slots 5-8). The number AOC s in slots 5-8 should parallel the population of SMATs in slots -4). 4. Insert the AOCs that output to your various users you wish to distribute the alarms to. Each AOC will drive two users of 6 relays each. User s and start in slot 9. Users and 4 are in slot 0, up to users 9 and 0 in slot. 5. Install /4 amp fuses in the fuse module for each slot occupied by a SMAT or an AOC.

Follow the instructions in the setup program to install T/ADS. T/ADS Software Configuration T/ADS for Windows is a configuration utility that allows you to configure your Alarm Distribution System (ADS) via a direct serial connection. The software maintains a database of ADS device configurations and provides a method for deploying new configurations or modifying existing configurations in an easy to use Windows interface. The topics covered will help you navigate through the software. They assume a basic understanding of the Windows interface and that the user knows the desired configuration of his ADS equipment. The cut & paste functions can be used in the Alarm Points Tab and the Control Relays Tab to quickly edit individual lines. Select F for On-line Help Pressing the F key at any time will bring up online help. This is especially useful for equation examples. Adding a New Device To add a new device to the T/ADS for Windows device database, choose New from the Device menu. You will then be prompted for a name for the new device. After entering the name of the new device click OK. If the name of an existing device is entered, a notification will appear and the a new device name will need to be chosen. (See Fig. 6) To open an existing device, choose Open from the Device menu. Choose the name of the device you wish to open from the given list of available devices and click OK. Active Tab Fig. 6 - Adding a New Device Fig. 7 - T/ADS Active Tab The software interface has three tabs from which to provision and configure the ADS. Select the Active tab to activate or deactivate ADS cards. To activate an 4
5 SMAT or AOC card, simply click on the image representing the card on the desired shelf. Activated cards are indicated by a lighted graphical interior. While inactive cards are blank except for the card name (SMAT or AOC). To edit the alarm points or relays associated with a card, double click on the desired card image. Double clicking on unselected card will select it and activate the editor. Just as in the actual hardware connection, the first four AOCs in each ADS shelf are reserved for KDA usage. Their control points cannot be edited as they are repeating the SMAT Alarms directly to the KDAs. AOCs 5 through 9 on each ADS shelf contain the programmable relays. When hovering the pointer over a card, it s identification will pop up, telling you which SMAT covers which points, which AOC s go to each KDA, and which AOCs go to each user. Alarm Points Tab will be declared when the switch is open and clear when it is not. Reversed alarms are typically used in security environments where you wish to monitor the wire. In the case of a door alarm a reversed alarm will trigger when the door is open, or if someone cuts the wire. To change the polarity for a point, navigate to the polarity column in the associated row and choose the desired polarity from the drop down box or press N or R on the keyboard. Hint: Even though it is possible to reverse an alarm point in the equations in the control relay section by using the Not functions, it generally is best to reverse the alarms at the input source. Doing so creates a positive logic" equation, which makes them easier to understand. Control Relays Tab Fig. 8 - T/ADS Alarm Points tab Each SMAT device window contains an Alarm Points tab where alarm points associated with SMAT cards can be given a description and polarity To enter a description for an alarm point, choose the desired SMAT card from the provided drop down box an move to the row associated with the desired point in the table using the <Tab> and <Enter> keys, or by clicking with the mouse. Enter the desired description and press <Tab> or <Enter> when complete. (See Fig. 8) The status of each alarm point depends on the signal on the input pin and the alarm polarity assigned to the alarm point. For the purposes of the following discussion, we will assume that one side of a switch is tied to ground, and another point is tied to an alarm point. When a point is defined to have Normal polarity, the system will declare an alarm when the switch is closed and will clear when open. A Reversed alarm Fig. 9 - T/ADS Control Relays tab Each device window contains a Control Relays tab where the relays associated with AOC cards can be provided with mapping rules (in the form of boolean logical equations) used to define how the relay operates. To enter an equation for a given relay, move to the row corresponding to the given relay and enter the logical equation or point number into the equation column (See Fig. 9). The operations supported are AND, OR, NOT and ( ) parenthesis. The numbers used in a given equation are the alarm input numbers to the SMATs. Only Active SMAT alarm point numbers can be referenced in equations. See the Active Tab section on page 4 for more information. When you have completed entering the equation, press <Enter> or <Tab>. The equation will then be compiled. If any syntax errors exist in the entered equation, 5
6 an error message will appear. (See Formula section for details.) A comment field is also defined that allows you to document the meaning of the alarm output point. These comments are included in the database report, which can be sent to the respective engineering groups of the various users, to document their alarm definitions. Formulas AND The AND operation is used for filtering. It will only trigger a response if ALL of the points referenced in the equation are triggered. Take for example the following equation: and and. This equation would only trigger an output relay if alarms,, and were ALL triggered. If only and were triggered, or only one of them were to be triggered, the output relay would not latch (See Fig. 0). OR The OR operation is used to summarize. It will trigger a response if ANY of the points referenced in the equation are triggered. Take for example the following equation: or or. This equation will trigger an output relay if ANY of alarms,, or are triggered (See Fig. 0). NOT The NOT operation is used for inversion. It will invert whatever point or output it is referencing in the equation. Take for example the following equation: not. This would trigger an output relay if the alarm point was in its un-alarmed condition. This effectively reverses the alarm points polarity. It is generally best to reverse polarity at the input source using the polarity column on the Alarm Points Tab. Doing it that way cre- Door Door Door ADS Any Door ates a positive logic equation, making it easier to understand. ( ) Parenthesis Parenthesis are used to determine the order of evaluation for the equation. Operations inside the parenthesis are given priority and evaluated first. Parse Error Messages These are the possible error messages, their meanings, and how to correct them.. Parse Error: Invalid Point Reference Change point numbers to be within range of Parse Error: Invalid Operator The only valid operators are AND, OR, NOT, and ( ).. Parse Error: Operator Cannot Follow NOT Consecutive operators are not allowed, they must have alarm point numbers between them. 4. Parse Error: Operators Cannot be Sequential - Consecutive operators are not allowed, they must have alarm point numbers between them. 5. Parse Error: Nesting Limit Exceeded Too many parenthesis in one equation. 6. Parse Error: Unexpected Close Parenthesis Check equation for half a pair of parenthesis and complete it or remove it. 7. Parse Error: Invalid Character Check equation for letters or other invalid characters. 8. Parse Error: Unexpected end-of-equation Check equation for operators missing an alarm point number. 9. Parse Error: Equation does not Resolve Check equation for a missing operator, or unbalanced operators. 0. Parse Error: Equation contains a point on a Nonactive SMAT Please activate the appropriate SMAT on the active tab. (See the Active Tab.). Parse Error: Unknown Parsing Error Recheck equation for all parameters entered. Rect. Rect. Rect. OR operator (Summary) ADS AND operator (Filtering) Fig. 0 - Example operations ALL Rectifi Failed Note: The AOC s utilize Form A relays in the Normally Open configuration. Applications requiring a Normally Closed relay can achieve that by placing a NOT around the entire equation. i.e., NOT ( or or ). Editing User Names The Control Relays Tab allows for the association of Proper Names for each bank of 6 relays. A symbolic name such as ABC Data provides better documentation than the User default. To associate a user with a given bank of relays, click on the Edit Users button. 6
7 Fig. - T/ADS Edit Users You will only be able to assign names for AOC cards that have been activated. In the table provided choose the row representing the desired bank and enter the users name in the User column. When you have finished editing user names, click Done. (See Fig. ) Downloading a Configuration Saving Configurations Fig. - Report Sample The SAVE button will save any changes that you have made to that device in the T/ADS database. The Save As function is also a useful way to copy a devices configuration quickly. Be sure you save your device configuration any time you make any changes! To download a configuration to an ADS, use the provided download cable. Connect one end to COM port on PC and the other end to CONFIG DB9 on back of shelf. From T/ADS choose Device Download while the appropriate device window is selected. Select the desired port to use from the list of provided ports. The device will then be downloaded with the current configuration as defined on the active database. The firmware version of the SMAT will be displayed on the download window. Reports Fig. - Downloading a Configuration T/ADS will print reports for each device as well. To print a report, select Print Device menu. A sample report is shown in Fig. 4. Note: remember to backup your database files to insure continuous operation should anything damage or delete your current database files. The database files contain all of the configuration information for each device. The following files require a backup: Device.dbf, Device.cdx, Shelves.dbf, Shelves.cdx, Banks.dbf, Banks.cdx, Smats.dbf, Smats.cdx, Keys.dbf, Keys.cdx Point 64 Device Failure The system will operate point 64 on the KDA should any of the activated SMATs or AOCs not respond. This serves as an indication that there is either a card failure or the system is databased for more cards than present. Note: To remove possible ambiguity when receiving, it is suggested to not use point 64. 7
