Communication Options Internet A broadband Internet connection will provide the fastest communication speeds for your SCADA system. Firewalls are installed to protect against outside threats and VPN (virtual private network) tunnels are configured to ensure data security between sites. The high bandwidth of a broadband connection ensures future expandability and opens the doors to many possibilities including IP video surveillance. This connection is typically used at the center of a SCADA system. Cellular Cellular is quickly becoming the easiest way to integrate remote sites into your SCADA system. If cellular service is available in your area, a cellular modem can be used to bring DSL-like speeds to any one of your sites for a small monthly fee. Our cellular modems have a built in firewall and VPN capabilities for data security. Cellular is usually used in place of broadband connections when not available or radios when installation/maintenance are too expensive. Cellular is particularly used at remote sites and can also be used for IP video surveillance. Spread Spectrum Radio Spread spectrum radios are installed to connect systems wirelessly without monthly fees or reliance upon outside broadcasting stations. They split up serial data and send it over multiple frequencies, where the receiver radio merges the pieces and passes it along to the intended node. With line-of-sight communication, these radios can securely link together sites that could be many miles apart. VHF-UHF Radio Metropolitan integrates systems using any one or combinations of communication options available in the customer s area such as licensed VHF-UHF Radio Channels together with, but not limited to, repeater systems and customer owned or public systems such as LTR trunked networks. It enables locations to share data and broadcast messages to each other over a centrally located repeater tower.
