No. K-16 Re Marking Requirements for Identifying Equipment Intended for Connection to 3 or 4-Wire Supply Background and Rationale CSA Standard CAN3-C235 used as a guide for establishing voltage standards for ac systems in Canada, reserves the use of 120/240V marking to indicate a single-phase 3-wire system. According to IEC, many UL Standards and electronic industry practises, 120/240V marking indicates that the equipment is suitable for dual voltages, i.e., 120V and 240V. In order to ensure that voltage markings on electrical and electronic equipment are clearly understood by all concerned, our Certification and Testing Division has developed the requirements contained in the attached T.I.L. No. K-16. The requirements contained in T.I.L. No. K-16 help to identify the equipment intended for connection to 3 or 4- wire supply and harmonize with IEC and UL requirements. Direction Manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment which are intended to be connected to 120/240V or 120/208V single-phase, 3-wire supply and 120/208V, 240/416V, 277/480V or 347/600V, 3-phase, 4-wire supply, may mark their products in accordance with Clauses 2.2 and 2.3 of T.I.L. No. K-16 as an alternative to providing wiring or circuit diagrams and installation instructions to clearly identify that equipment is intended for connection to a dual voltage system or a single voltage system with a neutral. K-16 Certification and Testing Division Product Group: General Date: December 30, 1991 Issued By: Lal Bahra EQUIPMENT: ITEM: All Electrical and Electronic Equipment Marking Requirements for Identifying Equipment Intended For Connection to 3 or 4-Wire Supply STANDARDS NOS: CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0-M91 - General Requirements - Canadian Electrical Code, Part II Purpose This Technical Information Letter (T.I.L.) documents requirements that may be used to identify equipment as being suitable for connection to a 3 or 4-wire supply, where it may otherwise not be obvious. Rationale Equipment marked as 120/240V is often understood to be dual voltage equipment suitable for both a 120V and 240V supply. Voltage marking such as 120/240V means multivoltage equipment according to IEC Standards and many UL Standards. CSA Standard CAN3-C235, used as a guide for establishing voltage standards for ac systems in Canada, reserves the use of 120/240V marking to indicate a single-phase 3-wire system. 120/240V, Dual Voltage System: Most of the Part II Standards address this situation by identifying the actual supply to the equipment. Marking such as "wired for...v" are added to the unit when it leaves the factory. Marking near a selector switch at the back of the unit may help to identify the 120V or 240V settings. What is important in this case is that the equipment operates from either a 120V supply or a 240V supply but not from both supplies at any time. 120/240V, 3W+G Systems: In this case two line conductors at 120V and one neutral conductor are brought into the unit, in addition to a ground conductor. Generally control circuitry, power supplies etc., operate at 120V and heaters, blowers and motors may operate at 240V. What is important here, is that the equipment simultaneously operates on both 120V and 240V. Unless this system is distinguished from the dual voltage system, it may cause confusion for electricians. 4 Other Systems with Neutral: CSA Standard CAN3-C235, Table 2 defines the following 3-phase, 4-conductor systems (Neutral is one of the conductors). i. 120/208Y ii. 240/416Y iii. 277/480Y iv. 347/600Y Unless properly identified, they may be mistaken to be dual voltage systems. To avoid confusion when a neutral is brought into the equipment as part of the supply, the total number of conductors should be identified along with the ground conductor (if any). For grounded equipment, the ground conductor should be brought in. For double insulated equipment, the ground conductor will not be brought in. The following requirements are intended to clarify the marking of equipment voltages and to harmonize with IEC and UL requirements. Requirements 1. Scope This T.I.L. applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended to be connected to a 120/240V, or 120/208V single-phase, 3-wire supply and 120/208V, 240/416V, 277/480V or 347/600V, 3-phase, 4-wire supply. 2. Markings 2.1 In addition to the marking requirements specified in the applicable CSA Part II Standard, equipment shall be provided with wiring or circuit diagram and installation instructions to identify the supply system required for the equipment or alternatively, it shall meet the marking requirements of applicable Clauses 2.2 or 2.3. 5 2.2 Equipment intended to be connected to a 120/240V, 3-wire, single phase supply or connected to a 120/208V, 3-wire, single phase supply (derived from the 120/208V, 3 phase supply system) shall be provided with markings adjacent to the voltage marking, as follows: "3-wire + ground" or "3W+G" for grounded equipment and "3-wire" or "3W" for double insulated equipment. 2.3 Equipment intended to be connected to a 120/208V, 240/416V, 277/480V or 347/600V, 3-phase, 4-wire supply, shall be provided with markings adjacent to the voltage marking, as follows: "4-wire + ground" or "4W+G" for grounded equipment and "4-wire" or "4W" for double insulated equipment.
