2 FOREWORD VM-5W1 For safe operation... Thank you for using our VM-5 Series Monitor. SHINKAWA Sensor Technology applies strict quality control and inspections to ensure the high reliability of its products. This instruction manual contains descriptive information, specifications, and operating, setting, and adjusting procedures. Please study the contents of this manual and related manuals thoroughly before installing or operating the equipment, and keep it handy for future reference. "Safety Conventions" Please thoroughly study the following section entitled "Safety Conventions" before operating the equipment. The safety symbols explained in this section are placed outside the left margin next to the text to which they apply. This unit is designed for use by specialists or persons thoroughly familiar with the field. Make sure that the end user receives the Instruction Manual delivered with this unit. Before use... When the unit is received, inspect it for damage suffered in transport and check whether it is the item you ordered. In the unlikely event that it was damaged in transport or does not function according to specifications, please contact the SHINKAWA Office or the dealer nearest to you. Store the unit under the ambient conditions given in the specification. Avoid places where it is exposed to high humidity or corrosive gases. i

3 SAFETY CONVENTIONS VM-5W1 Make it a rule to follow the instructions given in this manual. This manual contains important information designed to prevent personal injury and property damage, and ensure safe operation of the equipment. Familiarize yourself with the signs and symbols explained below before proceeding to read the manual, and observe the instructions given. Explanation of signs Symbols WARNING CAUTION Explanation Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. 4 SAFETY CONVENTIONS VM-5W1 To ensure safe use of this equipment, strictly observe the safety precautions provided in this manual, as well as installation methods and methods of use stipulated by laws and regulations. Will cause damage and malfunction of the instrument. Install the monitor unit and its relay module unit in the same location in the instrument rack. Will cause damage to the instrument and malfunction of the turbine monitoring system. A printed circuit board and electronic products may receive damage with the static electricity of a human body. Touch the metal part once and discharge your static electricity before dealing with it. Will cause damage and malfunction of the instrument. Do not touch parts and soldered surfaces of the instrument rack. Will cause damage and malfunction of the instrument. The instrument rack is a precision instrument. Take care not to expose it to excessive shock or vibration. Do not change the parameter settings during operation. May cause unexpected alarm output. Do not measure insulation resistance and dielectric strength other than those at places specified. Will cause damage to the instrument. Do not remodel this monitor unit without permission. Otherwise the guarantee can not be made. iii

5 SAFETY CONVENTIONS VM-5W1 EMC(Electro-magnetic compatibility) The EMC of each VM-5 Series monitor is evaluated by various noise tests. However, its characteristics may vary with on environmental conditions such as the magnitude of noise, ambient temperature, humidity and the arrangement of equipment. For the above reason, when operating the monitor, please observe the following CAUTION. CAUTION MANDATORY MANDATORY MANDATORY MANDATORY MANDATORY PROHIBITION The unit should be operated by specialists or personnel who have knowledge of it. When a shielded cable is used, the length of the unshielded cable section should be less than 100mm (3.937in REF.). For each relay used near this unit, devices related to this unit or signal cables connecting the unit and these devices, install a surge killer. Firmly tighten each screw used for mounting each unit. In additional, always close the face plate for the unit, then fix it with knurled screws. In order to prevent the system from its malfunction when the unit fails, provide the systematic interlock function. Do not wire input signal cables in parallel with control and power cables. It is recommended that separated wire ducts be used for these cables. Do not use any radio equipment near the unit. PROHIBITION Noise filter Noise transmitted through each cable may be rejected to some extent by inserting a ferrite core in the cable (note 1). If the cable passes through noisy surroundings, it is recommended that such a noise prevention device is used. (note 1) ZCAT : TDK iv

GENERAL INFORMATION VM-5W1 OVERVIEW The VM-5W1 Dual Power Supply Instrument Rack is designed to accommodates the VM-5Z Power Supply Unit, VM-5 Series Monitor and VM-5Y Relay Module Unit for mounting on a standard panel. This rack can accommodate 1 VM-5P Communication / Phase Marker Unit, and up to 10 VM-5 Series Monitors with a VM-5Y Relay Module for each unit. A duplexed power supply is obtained by mounting two VM-5Z Power Supply Units. FEATURES Conforms to API St d 670. Contact output (Input abnormal alarm). Dual power supply Mandatory Carefully read both this manual and the manual for each VM-5 Series monitor unit to be mounted in this rack. Mandatory For INTERCONNECTION and MAINTENANCE proceed as described in the instruction manuals for each VM-5 Series monitor unit used in combination with this instrument rack. Caution If megger test is made on the signal cable between transducer and monitor, disconnect the cable from transducer and monitor. Be sure to discharge the charged electric load before connecting the cable to the transducer and monitor. If this caution is not adhered to, the transducer and monitor could be damaged. Caution Use a time-delay circuit protector. In-rush current caused by power activation may damage the unit. The value of in-rush current is from a few to ten times higher than the normal level. (The value of in-rush current varies depending on the timing of power activation and the impedance of the power supply.) -1-

When mounting the instrument rack within the panel, do not close these ventilation holes. If closed, the temperature in the rack may rise to shorten the service life of electronic parts used. Do not place anything which interrupts ventilation within 200 mm from top and bottom faces of the instrument rack. Do not place the apparatus which generates heat under the instrument rack. Be careful when installing the instrument rack in a bad-ventilated closed box (instrument panel). It may cause shortening the life time of electronic parts because of marked rising in temperature of the instrument rack in a bad-ventilated closed box which keeps the heat in. Cool down inside the box with a cooling fan or the like. Especially when installing in a small closed box, use the forced-air cooling apparatus like an electronic air conditioner. *6 The serial interface input/output connectors are not functional unless the VM-5P1,2 is mounted E2.7

DESCRIPTION OF PARTS VM-5W1 3-2 DESCRIPTION OF PARTS 1 Communication & Phase Marker Unit Mount the VM-5P Communication & Phase Marker Unit at the far left of the instrument rack front panel. 2 Monitor unit A maximum of 10 monitor units can be mounted. (Slots not used are covered with a blank panel.) 3 Relay Module Unit Mount VM-5Y Relay Module Units designed for use with the monitors installed. 4 VM-5Y terminal block For connection of the input transducers. The monitor output signals are output through a buffer output terminal. Provides alarm contact output. 5 VM-5P rear panel 6 DANGER BYPASS switch This switch permits collective bypassing of the DANGER alarm output from all monitor units mounted in the instrument rack.. It is necessary to keep switch on for more than two (2) seconds to operate the DANGER BYPASS function. 7 SIO connector (1) (Enabled for VM-5P1 or VM-5P2) RS-232C/485 (IN) 8 SIO connector (2) (Enabled for VM-5P2) RS-485 (OUT) 9 VM-5P terminal block For connection of the input transducers. 16 4. INTERCONNECTION VM-5W1 4-1 WIRING OF EXTERNAL CONTACT INPUT Beware of electric shock from high-voltage parts. Warning Sequence function Short between the SEQ and COM terminals to activate the sequence function of all monitor units mounted in the instrument rack. Alarm reset function Short between the RES and COM terminals to release the self-holding alarms of all monitor units mounted in the instrument rack. Filter In function Short between the FLT and COM terminals to turn ON (IN) the seismic filters (option) of all monitor units mounted in the instrument rack. It is necessary to keep short circuit of the terminals for more than one (1) second to operate these functions. 19 300 to 340mm 5. INSTALLATION VM-5W1 5-2 PANEL INSTALLATION Prohibition Mandatory Ventilation holes are drilled through the top and bottom faces of the instrument rack for natural cooling. When mounting the instrument rack within the panel, do not close these ventilation holes. If closed, the temperature in the rack may rise to shorten the service life of electronic parts used. Do not place anything which interrupts ventilation within 200 mm from top and bottom faces of the instrument rack. Do not place the apparatus which generates heat under the instrument rack. Be careful when installing the instrument rack in a bad-ventilated closed box (instrument panel). It may cause shortening the life time of electronic parts because of marked rising in temperature of the instrument rack in a bad-ventilated closed box which keeps the heat in. Cool down inside the box with a cooling fan or the like. Especially when installing in a small closed box, use the forced-air cooling apparatus like an electronic air conditioner. (2) Insert panel clamper into 1 at the side of the instrument rack and slide it toward the instrument panel. (3) Insert 2 into the rear holes at the side of the instrument rack. (4) Screw 3 into 2 and push panel clamper against the instrument panel. (5) Repeat this procedure for the panel clamper on the other side. Prohibition Prohibition Avoid applying excessive force to the screws as this may deform the mounting bracket. Tighten the panel clampers on both sides uniformly. Make sure to use support angles for reinforcement where indicated. -13-

UNIT INSTALLATION VM-5W1 Follow the same procedure to install the VM-5Z Power Supply Unit, VM-5P Phase Marker & Communication Unit, VM-5X1 Interface Unit, and VM-5X2 Interface I / O Module. 6-1 REMOVAL OF MONITOR (FRONT PANEL) Mandatory Caution Make sure to turn off the power. Failure to turn off the power before pulling the monitor unit out of the instrument rack will result in serious damage and accidents. 1) Evenly loosen the knurled screws at the top and bottom of face plate. Prohibition Tighten the screw by hand. Do not use any tools. 2) Pull out the monitor unit. Prohibition Make sure not to touch the chassis. -14-

21 6. UNIT INSTALLATION VM-5W1 6-2 MOUNTING OF MONITOR (FRONT PANEL) Mandatory Caution Make sure to turn off the power. Failure to turn off the power before inserting the monitor unit into the instrument rack will result in serious damage and accidents. 1) Align the monitor chassis with the grooves in the top and bottom of the instrument rack and push it into the rack. Make sure not to touch the chassis. Prohibition 2) Next open the face plate sideways and insert the unit card located behind it firmly into the connector. -15-

(When doing so, make sure to accommodate the flat cable in the space between the chassis and the frame.) 4) Evenly tighten the knurled screws at the top and bottom of face plate. Prohibition Tighten the screw by hand. Do not use any tools. -16-

Failure to turn off the power before pulling the monitor unit out of the instrument rack will result in serious damage and accidents. 1) Remove the screws at the top and bottom of the unit. 2) Pull out unit. Prohibition Make sure not to touch the chassis. -17-

24 6. UNIT INSTALLATION VM-5W1 6-4 MOUNTING OF UNIT (REAR PANEL) Mandatory Caution Make sure to turn off the power. Failure to turn off the power before inserting the monitor unit into the instrument rack will result in serious damage and accidents. 1) Align the chassis of the power supply unit with the grooves in the top and bottom of the instrument rack and push it into the rack. Caution If this caution is not adhered, the connector pin may be bent. Make sure not to touch the chassis. Prohibition 2) Fasten the screws at the top and bottom of the unit. -18-

25 7. MAINTENANCE VM-5W1 7-1 REPLACEMENT OF ALUMINUM ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITOR Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used on the instrument rack, which have a limited life. Their service life varies according to the conditions of use, but for preventive maintenance it is recommended to check the capacitors listed below in 5-year cycles for characteristic deterioration and replace them as necessary. Replacement by SST is recommended. 27 Warranty The warranty period for the delivered product shall be 3 years from the date of delivery from our factory. But the warranty period for the special order product and software shall be 1 year, and for the repairing parts shall be 6 months. In the event that the delivered product develops any defects within the warranty period for which Shinkawa Electric is liable, the defective part will be replaced or repaired in our factory at our own expense. In the event that a shinkawa engineer needs to be dispatched for repair purposes during the warranty period, the cost of the repairs will be borne by shinkawa Electric ; however, the travel expenses shall be charged in accordance with our policies. However, the following are excluded from our warranty: (1) Any defects due to improper handling or operation by the user. (2) Any defects, the case of which is not attributable to Shinkawa Electric. (3) Any modifications or repairs made by others than Shinkawa Electric or persons commissioned by Shinkawa Electric. (4) Any handling, storage and operation under severe environmental conditions that exceed the design specifications. (5) Any defects due to fire, flood, earthquake, lightning and other Acts of God. (6) The consumables (7) Other defects considered not to be attributable to Shinkawa Electric. This warranty applies exclusively to the delivered product units. Shinkawa Electric will not be held liable for consequential damage caused either directly or indirectly through a defect of the delivered product. The warranty period and scope of machinery and equipment made by manufacturers other than Shinkawa Electric shall be in accordance with the conditions of the respective manufacturer, regardless of the provisions made above.
