3 GENERAL HINTS ON RUNNING MINI-SCAN TESTS PIPETTES To use the pipettes choose the correct volume for the sample, diluted sample or detector, and place the tip on pipette securely. Push the top plunger down and insert pipette below the top of the fluid and let plunger up slowly. Make sure the tip is filled to top. If not, release it and redo. When releasing fluid press down a couple of times. Always take a new tip for a new sample and discard the used tips. CHARGING THE UNIT Plug the adaptor into the outlet ( ) and into the mini-scan unit to charge until the small battery indicator is fully red (charge will be good for 4 hours). RESULTS RETRIEVAL You will be given a dated sample ID number when you start running samples. Record the sample on paper and enter it into the Excel spreadsheet when finished with data retrieval. Place the flash drive into the USB port on the mini-scan. To collect data press Done when completing a test and the data will be delivered to the flash drive. To retrieve just insert the flash drive into your computer and download. It will appear in Excel format. There is space for the tech ID, date and sample identification. There is also room with each results for the dilution, sample type, etc., to be added into the Excel format. KITS AND KIT CONTENTS TG kits contain 10 tubes for dilution if necessary (grey caps). FFA kits contain 4 tubes for dilution (grey caps). AN kits contains 2 tubes for dilution (grey caps). All kits contain calibrator tubes (For FFA and AN: 2 yellow-capped C1, 2 green-capped C2, and for TG, 6 clear-capped tubes). All kits contain 10 reagent tubes (red TG, Blue FFA, lavender AN). Use the lower foam insert with tubes as your test tube rack. Leave bottles and tubes in foam rack for ease of addition. ONE GENERAL HINTS ON RUNNING MINI-SCAN TESTS

4 Purpose: To test in process or finished biodiesel for total glycerin-a critical parameter of biodiesel quality. A one step dilution is used. RANGE: % REPEATABILITY: +/- 0.05% DEMONSTRATED CORRELATION TO GC: 0.99 Select the button for the Total Glycerin Test. CALIBRATION 1. Label 3 clear tops: C0 (also called Blank ), C1, and C2 Flash drive should be attached to Mini-Scan if results need to be saved onto the flash drive. Heater should be on and set to 39 degrees C. 2. Fill each tube with solution from corresponding brown bottles labeled CO, C1, and C2 using 50 ul yellow pipette. Use new pipette tip for each liquid. Draw up solution slowly, making sure there are no air bubbles in pipette tip. TWO

5 3. Cap & Invert each tube three times 4. Press TOTAL GLYCERIN, then CALIBRATE, then CONTINUE 5. Follow prompts to insert C0 (Blank) twice, then C1 C0 is also your Blank. THREE

6 6. Place all tubes in heater for 10 minutes 7. Follow prompts (at 10 minutes, Mini-Scan will prompt to insert C1 & C2) 8. Press SAVE when CALIBRATION SUCCEEDED is displayed. FOUR

7 TESTING SAMPLES 1. Press TOTAL GLYCERIN then RUN TEST Flash drive should be attached to Mini-Scan if results need to be saved onto the flash drive. Heater should be on and set to 39 degrees C. 2. Add 200 ul of sample into a grey topped tube, C1, using the blue pipette Make sure your sample oil is well mixed. Take up sample slowly. If there are bubbles, redo. To add 200 ul you will need to use blue pipette (100 ul) twice. 3. Cap, swirl, and invert 4 times FIVE

8 4. Take up 50 ul of this solution with the yellow pipette and fill a red capped tube 5. Recap and invert 3 times 6A. Insert Grey Tube Listen for beep to remove tube from Mini-Scan. SIX

9 6B. Insert Red Tube into Mini-Scan to start 10 minute timer countdown 6C. Place Red Tube in heater. 7. Follow prompts to read sample. Invert sample gently after removing from heater. SEVEN

10 8. Press DONE or NEXT (to read another sample if required) To calculate w/w % or ppm, multiply results by 10 or by 100,000 EIGHT
