1 1 Welcome to this web based training session. This presentation provides you an introduction to the Fujitsu ETERNUS JX40. The JX40 is a passive direct server attached drive extension offering extension of server storage. During this session, we will have a look at the features and functionality of the JX40, including service and support information towards the end of the session. 2 The ETERNUS JX40 is a reliable and innovative easy-to-use storage subsystem. This directly attached storage expands the storage capacity of PRIMERGY servers through a fast six gigabit per second SAS connection with up to 24, 2.5 SAS, Serial ATA or Solid State Disk drives per enclosure. Up to three enclosures can be daisy-chained to triple the storage capacity. The JX40 has one SAS host interface for connecting to a RAID Host Bus Adapter in a PRIMERGY server. For high reliability the ETERNUS JX40 is always equipped with two redundant power supplies with two redundant fans each. 3 Here is a short overview of the specifications. A link to a data sheet with full specification details is given later in this web based training 4 In this chapter we will have a look at the features and functionalities of the JX40, including cabling and rack installation instructions. 5 As the product arrives at the customers the first step is typically unpacking. The ETERNUS JX40 standard delivery contains all material for rack mounting and powering. Hard drives and SAS cables are configurable options that need to be configured when ordering the product. It is strongly recommended to retain the original packing material should a need arise to transport the product at a later time. Please note the given minimum times to allow the ETERNUS JX40 to acclimatize before connecting it to mains power. 6 If the JX40 is to be installed in a rack, a rack mount kit is required. On the slide illustrated rack kit is for PRIMECENTER and DataCenter racks. For installation instructions please use the web links provided at the end of this web based training. 7 Here is an overview of the available SAS cables; all cables support four parallel SAS lines. The short cascade cable is used for daisy-chaining from one system unit to next. All cables need to be configured per order; standard configuration includes no cables.

2 To release the connectors, use only the pull strap or the push lever. Never pull the connectors or cables directly. 8 Here is an overview of the installation steps, with couple of additional remarks. There are two configurable switches in the LED panel; they should be always left in their default positions. First connect the power to the ETERNUS JX40 and then switch on the host server. A SAS signal detected from the SAS RAID controller automatically powers up the storage subsystem. For complete installation instructions please download the Operating Manual. The web links for downloading all related documentation are given at the end of this presentation. 9 Now let s take a look at the ETERNUS JX40 enclosure. On the front left side you will find the enclosure s status LEDs. The blue identify LED can be illuminated by the ServerView RAID Manager. Please only use the default switch settings, the other settings are for service purposes only. 10 At the rear of the ETERNUS JX40 enclosure you will find two redundant Hot Plug power supplies with two redundant fans each. On the top left is the field-replaceable, non-redundant SAS Expander Unit. 11 All these modules of the ETERNUS JX40 are FRUs, Field Replaceable Units. The hard drives and power supplies are also CRUs, Customer Replaceable Units. 12 Now let s take a closer look at the power supplies. For optimized redundancy, it is recommended to connect each power supply to a different phase or circuit. Always follow the local safety regulations regarding dual feed power supply. If you intend to use multiple phases or circuits for redundancy and/or load distribution, to minimize the chances for a complete system fall out it is recommended to have at least one of the ETERNUS JX40 power supplies and one host server power supply to share the same phase or circuit. Please note that a replacement of a Hot Plug power supply shall not take longer than 5 minutes. The power supplies are switched on when a SAS signal is detected. 13 In the case a power supply fan fails, the surviving fan is switched to a higher speed. By the way, that may also cause the noise level of the system to increase, so not only for maintaining redundancy it is necessary to replace the power supply as soon as possible. The status/fault LED changes to amber when an error inside the power supply is detected.

3 14 The ETERNUS JX40 supports only one SAS expander meaning the host interface cannot be configured to be redundant. The SAS-IN and SAS-OUT ports support a maximum of three enclosures. Please refer to the table for descriptions regarding the status LEDs of the SAS Expander Unit. The debug connector is for internal use only. Always use the ejector levers not only for ejecting the part but also for inserting it properly after a replacement. 15 Next we will have a look at the hard disk drives. The ETERNUS JX40 hard disks are interchangeable with those used in PRIMERGY servers. You may use a mixed population of 6G SAS, 3G SATA or 3G SSD drives within the same enclosure. When using several SSD drives, please bear in mind that the high I/O transfer rate of the SSD drives are more liable to saturate the I/O interface than when using conventional disk drives. The drives are numbered from 0 through 23, left to right. 16 The MegaRAID SAS e controller supports the usual RAID levels as shown here. Use ServerView RAID Manager to configure this controller, in the same way that you would configure any other PRIMERGY RAID controller. All drives within a RAID group must be the same type, including Hot Spare disks. Please only use the hot replacement procedure if the drive is in a fault-tolerant RAID Group and the drive is inactive or marked as defective. For replacement of active or online disks, use ServerView RAID Manager to set the drive manually offline first. Before you fully remove a drive, let it spin down for 1 minute. For proper cooling insert the new drive or a blank insert within 5 minutes from removal. 17 All drive slots of the ETERNUS JX40 must be fitted with either hard disk drives or blank inserts for correct cooling and electromagnetic compatibility. Please refer to the table for a description of the status LEDs. 18 Here shown a list of supported PRIMERGY models at the time of General Availability of the JX40. For reliable operation, only use firmware updates and drivers from Fujitsu. The MatrixEP tool provides up-to-date compatibility information - again, download link provided at the end of this web based training. 19 Minimum configuration contains one ETERNUS JX40 enclosure connected to one SAS RAID Host Bus Adapter port. The minimum configuration can be upgraded enclosure-by-enclosure to a maximum configuration of total of six enclosures connected to one RAID controller using its

4 both external SAS ports. It is also possible to span one logical drive over multiple JX40 enclosures. 20 Should the JX40 be installed in a rack the serial number is visible on the back side of the unit. 21 Support for ServerView monitoring functions is provided by ServerView Agents from ServerView Suite version onwards. ServerView uses the SCSI Enclosure Services protocol over SAS to monitor the features shown. 22 Here are the supported operating systems - for current status, always refer to the MatrixEP tool. The ETERNUS JX40 supports boot functionality for PRIMERGY servers; refer to the respective documentation for detailed information. 23 As promised, here a number of useful web links for additional information. You may want to check with your local Fujitsu representative for additional local product information. 24 Configuring a JX40 for an order is very straight forward; only the type and number of disks need to be configured but one should not forget the connection cable to the host server and/or cable for cascading. The online configuration tool System Architect can be found from the given link. And here you will find a document with order numbers for the individual parts. 25 Here is some miscellaneous information regarding the ETERNUS JX This last chapter focuses on service and support related information. 27 For servicing always use Electro Static Discharge preventive measures and follow the local electric safety regulations. 28 Hard drives and power supplies are categorized as Customer Replaceable Units, meaning they can also be replaced by the end user. Replacement instructions can be found in the Operating Manual. 29 These are the Field Replaceable Units. For replacing the mid- or backplane - utmost unlikely defect - the entire housing needs to be replaced.

5 Refer to the Operating Manual and the Service Supplement for detailed replacement instructions. When handling defective parts always follow the same ESD measures as when handling good parts.
