1 Veritas Appliance Hardware Service Procedure I/O module replacement: Veritas 5240 Appliance Storage Shelf Document Number: 158 Version: 4.0 (7/04/16) Purpose This document describes the process for replacing an I/O module in a Veritas Storage Shelf for the NetBackup 5240 Appliance. Affected storage shelves NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf The NetBackup 5240 Storage Shelf is a 2U12 drive enclosure that contains twelve 6TB 7200 rpm SAS hard disk drives, for a backup storage capacity of 49TBs. Each disk drive can be accessed from the storage shelf's front panel. An embedded RAID controller is used to configure the disk drives into a RAID 6 configuration. 2 Onsite Policies and Procedures HSP #158 I/O module replacement: Veritas 5240 Appliance Storage Shelf Electrical safety The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards. When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions to prevent personnel injuries or device damage. When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge (ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage. To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations: Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the electrostatically sensitive elements on a board. When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit. Hardware part replacement procedure This section describes how to remove and replace an I/O module in a Veritas 5240 Storage Shelf. Requirements Hot-swappable I/O module kit Cable labels Pen or pencil with which to write on the labels About the Veritas 5240 Storage Shelf I/O modules The rear panel of the Veritas 5240 Storage Shelf contains two I/O modules. These modules are located between the Power Cooling Modules (PCM). The two I/O modules slide into the rear of the shelf, with I/O module 0 above I/O module 1. The storage shelf can run with only one functioning I/O module. If both I/O modules are faulty the storage shelf must be turned off. The following figure shows the locations of the I/O modules and the locations of the status LEDs. I/O Module 0 I/O Module 1 2

3 When an I/O module fails, its amber Fault LED illuminates. Note that the I/O module's blue ID LED may also be illuminated. You must have access to the rear panel of the storage shelf. It is not necessary to remove the shelf from the rack. To remove the faulty I/O module 1 Locate and identify the storage shelf with the faulty module. 2 Verify that the storage shelf is the unit identified in the work order. If the work order provides the storage shelf serial number, verify that the work order serial number and the storage shelf serial number match. You can find the serial number by looking at the tab on the left Power Cooling Module. Serial Number starts with SH 3 Identify the failed I/O module by investigating the rear of the storage shelf. 4 Ensure the other I/O module is still working. 5 Locate the SAS3 cable or cables from the faulty I/O module. Label the cables with the port letter of the I/O module SAS3 ports from which you remove the cables. Write down on paper the location of the plastic blue tabs on the cable connectors. They either are on top of the cable connector or underneath it. You must ensure that the blue tabs on the replacement cables are oriented exactly as they were on the original faulty cable or cables. Note: The serial ports are not used. There should not be any cables attached to the serial port. 6 Remove the SAS3 cable or cables from the faulty I/O module. Do not disconnect the other ends of the cables from another storage shelf or from the appliance. 7 Locate the release latch at the bottom of the faulty I/O module. 8 With your thumb and forefinger, grasp the latch and gently squeeze it to release the latch of the module as displayed in the step 1 of the following figure. 3

4 9 Swing the latch out and use it as a handle to remove the I/O module as displayed in the step 2 in the following figure. 10 Gently pull on the latch to remove the I/O module from its housing. 11 Place the module in an ESD-preventive bag. To install the I/O module 1 Locate the replacement I/O module. 2 Remove the module from any packaging. 4

5 3 Slide the I/O module into the chassis. Make sure that the latch is swung out in the released position. 4 Begin closing the I/O module latch when you feel resistance as you slide the I/O module into the chassis. Closing the latch helps guide the I/O module into place. After you fully push the I/O module into the chassis, the latch snaps into place. 5 The latch snaps into place 6 Verify that the module is inserted all the way into the housing. 7 Wait up to 3 minutes for the LEDs to light up. 8 Replace the SAS3 cables into their correct ports. Make sure that the cable labels match the port labels. Also ensure that the blue tabs are positioned exactly as they were with the faulty SAS3 cable or cables. The blue tabs are either positioned on top of the cable connector or beneath it. Refer to your cable removal notes. Note: The I/O modules are installed as mirror images of each other. As a result, the latch of the I/O module 0 is located at the bottom of the I/O module. The latch of the I/O module 1 is located at the top of the I/O module. After completing the hardware replacement procedures, Veritas recommends that you do the following: Remove all boxes and shipping containers from the installation area. Recycle materials as much as possible. Return any equipment or tools as needed. 5
